In this thread we can appreciate the works and overall greatness of the mad genius that is Tom Waits. So...

Start appreciatin'.

Sadly I don't think a whole lot of people on this forum even know who he is. Screw them!

I'm listening to Rain Dogs on vinyl right now. Mmmmm Gun Street Girl, ohyes.

I wrote an article on an upcoming movie Tom is in here:

Also, I bought a print of this from deviantART because it's amazing:

And, I did a little sketch of my own (which I sold a print of already woo!)

So, raindog, what are your favorite songs?

Yeah, I thought so. They don't know what they're missin'.

I'm looking forward to Imaginarium and both of those prints are great! Excellent work on that sketch

As for my favorite songs...too many to list but the first ones that come to mind are: Rain Dogs (of course), Lucinda, Tom Traubert's Blues, Goin' Out West, I Don't Wanna Grow Up, Ol' 55, and Hoist That Rag. What are yours?

Thanks! Imaginarium looks great, I hope we see a definite release date soon.

I have way too many favorites as well.. some of mine are Make it Rain, Cold Cold Ground (the Big Time version not the Frank's Wild Years one), Little Drop of Poison, Heart Attack and Vine, Long Way Home, Mr. Siegal and Swordfishtrombone.

I have a big collection of live recordings from shows as well, so I have most of the more well-known stories. I love those.

At work people who are too close to me get an earful of Tom because I'm always singing out loud with my Ipod. :o

Tom Traubert's Blues introduced me to the magical world of Waits, and I never looked back. Currently my favorite Waits tune is probably Walk Away from the "Orphans" album.

He scares me. :csad:

Shut up! :cmad: You've only heard two songs.

I love Walk Away. Orphans has a lot of good stuff. I don't think they pressed it in vinyl though and that makes me sad.

My second favorite song off Orphans is probably Lucinda.

He scares me. :csad:

lol all my friends have said that after I tried turning them on to his music. They usually refer to him as "that scary/creepy guy he listens to" or the "guy with the bear voice".

I remember the first time I wore my Tom Waits shirt to school the question I was most asked, (besides who's Tom Waits) was "What's Tom waiting for?"

Tom Waits for no man! hahahaha

Have you seen that animation, by the way? It's so strange and amazing.

Would that be the one with the stripper that goes off in a limo at the end?

Tom Waits = awesome. Seriously, he's extremely badass. I'm particularly fond of Heartattack and Vine, One from the Heart, Closing Times, and Bone Machine. Other than his music (and I can say this for nearly 90% of the bands I listen to) I honestly don't know very much about his personal life.

I never could find that vinyl album for you, Runt. :csad:

My favorite.

No Tom Waits thread is complete without mentioning Jersey Girl.

I just got Heart Attack and Vine on vinyl today in the mail.

Nobody knows a whole lot about his personal life as he has a habit of inventing stories for entertainment or in place of the truth of things that are nobody's business. He's said several times that there's no way to know what he's said about himself that is truth or fiction.

My favorite.

Totally classic!

No Tom Waits thread is complete without mentioning Jersey Girl.

Ugh I love that song too much for my own good.

It's a terrific song. Never really cared for Springsteen's cover, not sure why that one ended up being the better known version. I guess it's just 'cuz it's by Springsteen.

Yeah, I'll bet that's why. I don't like that version at all.

In other news, I just found my way to a site that has pretty much every bootleg compilation ever made of Tom's stuff... and I'm drowning in new awesome amazing junk. A lot of it is collaborations with other artists but there's a good amount of alternate masters and unreleased stuff. I haven't even downloaded all the albums and I've got like 200+ new songs (or new versions of old ones.)

There's this one called 'Do you know what I Adi Imin' with Chuck E. Weiss and it is hypnotizing and awesome.

Sounds quite awesome. Link, plz?

I love the Springsteen version of Jersey Girl. Maybe because I heard the Springsteen version before I knew it was a Waits song. Same goes for Downtown Train with Rod Stewart.

This makes me sad. :csad:
