Frankenstein!

Foxy Brown versus Black Frankenstein was the best there ever was and ever will be.

Which is your favorite version? The horror hammer versions? Ken Branagh's adaptation? Mel Brook's version?

I was watching Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and just thought the movie was meh. Maybe it's because I'm not that big of a fan of the actual book. Frankenstein is one of the few stories that Hollywood has improved upon. My favorite version is Young Frankenstein. It's even better than what Shelly wrote.

Oh and as much as I really dislike Van Helsing, I thought it had a great version of Frankenstein, especially the look. It beats Deniro with his Brooklyn accent pretending to be the monster with those scars.

The Karloff version is great, but to say the least Mary Shelly's frankenstien is one of the greatest novels ever written, and while the movie takes a little different take on the story and does an absolutely grand job doing so, there is no way the greatness of the literary monster could ever be captured on film

The Karloff version is great indeed, I wouldn't say anything to the contrary, it in itself is one of my top 50 or so movies ever made, and doing so only because they took the liberties they did

i'm surprisednobody has mentioned two animated versions of frankenstein first the giant robot FRANKENSTEIN JR and the70'S drak pack [the eenage descendants of dracula frankenstein and the wolfman were super-heroes codenamed drac, frankie and the hoorible howler respectively

I prefer Frankenstein over Bride because Una O'Connor wasn't in it.

Man, that woman was annoying.
True

And you really cant blame the tone of voice Claude Rains used with her in The Invisable Man.

"I told you not to disturb me!" :D

Well weren't her character's intended to be annoying? ...I guess she did a good job then.

Not a big Van Helsing fan either...but here's some random trivia: Shuler Hensley, who played the monster in Van Helsing, is also currently playing the same character in the new Broadway version of Young Frankenstein.

Frankenstein is the book that I read from start to finish and wrote a term paper on all in one day. I actually liked the book a lot. But my favorite movie version is Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein. I can't watch any other movie version without thinking of that movie, which kind of ruins the experience, but I still get a laugh. :oldrazz:

I just found that out! I was watching Hollywood Insider yesterday and they were talking about the stage version of Young Frankenstein. And even though Mel Brooks himself is working on the play, I don't think it'll be as good as the movie. It works best as black and white! But I'd still love to see it sometime.

Shuler Hensley is awesome. It's cool to see he's reprising his role as Frankenstein's monster again. As I said, he was one of the only thing I enjoyed about Van Helsing.

Nope. James Whale thought she was funny so she was "comic relief."

Right, and that could be in the form of a character that is a nuisance.

And I agree with everyone else. Van helsing was horrible...which is just too bad.

She played towards her strengths. :)

I called him that in my first post.

Because firstly, I prefer the Hollywood version(with ee-gor). And secondly, I always justify it by saying, even in the Shelly book, the monster called Victor "father." It was Victor who created him, so the monster has rightly inherited the name Frankenstein as well.

Most people have the same last name as their father. So I don't think it's incorrect at all.

LOL - nice try.

Marry Shelly's Franknstein (the movie) was NOTHING like the book...

But anyway, Bride Of Frankenstein and the original James Whale Frankenstein are the two best, in that order.

Clancy Brown did a good version in "The Bride"....he was the best part of that movie.

He's a great actor, I loved him on the DVD of the London production of Oklahoma. Man, he can sing.

I walked past the theater a few nights ago, they have one of the doors designed after the Brain Depository door from the movie, complete with the "After 5pm, Slip Brains Under Door" note. :oldrazz:

The show looks funny, but the ticket prices are ridiculous for a decent seat, so I'll probably just try the $25 lottery eventually. And I don't think they can top the movie.

I need to see that in New York before tickets are completely sold out.

Anyway, I'd say the best film version is a toss up between James Whale's two great films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). I think the latter is better made and Karloff is more endearing and the whole cast is top notch (Karloff, Klive, Potorious, Lanchester, etc.) but the first one is a more coherent and better paced story/plot.. But the latter is more entertaining, albeit Una O'Connor had one too many scenes and I thought the mini-characters were over the top. The first was more horrific and Clive's "Henry" was more audacious. So they both have their good and strong pints.

Young Frankenstein would be third as a hilarious film.

Mary Shelly's Frankenstein...meh. It is technically the closest to the book, but I personally think Whale's vision (save for the monster not being quite introspective enough in Bride) is preferrable to the book, anyway. Besides that, while I liked the visuals and music and DeNiro was very good as usual (actually quite moving as the monster, second only to Karloff) the movie suffered from branagh's ego reaching its zeneth around this time (as seen in his next movie, Hamlet) and was way too over-the-top and jumped from goth horror, romance, slasher etc. too often.

I love the classic 1931 movie. However, it was based more on the 1920s play by to Peggy Webling rather than the original Shelley novel.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein 1948 is my favorite

Glenn Strange played the monster in that one.

I'm partial to the original book, but special mention goes to 1973's Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell, which was a pre-Star Wars team-up of Dave Prowse (Vader) as the monster and Peter Cushing (Tarkin) as Dr. F. :word:

:wow:

Is the new broadway play going to be a musical?

Yep, it's a musical. It's been somewhat controversial because of the ridiculous ticket prices (over $400 for premium seats), plus they're about to open and Roger Bart, who's playing the Gene Wilder role, is having really bad back problems and has been missing previews all week.

Plus there are a lot of theater people who are still ticked off that The Producers won so many awards in 2001 that they are pretty much ready to pounce on it when opening night comes.

I still want to see it (I loved The Producers on b'way), but again, $25 ticket lottery, definitely.

They're all jealous of Brooks! I agree, I really want to see it as well but those ticket prices are a lot. I always go to NY in the winter to visit so I will even take a look into it.

Roger Bart is definitely an excellent choice for Fronkensteen! Hehe, you know what would have been cool? If they had got Gene Wilder to play the old blind man. But I really want to see it, even if I have to gag the usher and sneak in! I heard about the lottery too, fat chance I say. lol

Halloween morning on the Today show....Roger Bart and a bunch of the people from the show sang a couple songs from it. I was busy doing stuff, so only caught a bit of it.

I've only been on sporaticly the last couple of weeks....trying to take a semi vacation from modding for a little bit....trying to post for fun and not work.
