Set between contemporary London, and the futuristic religion-dominated Meanwhile City, the film traces the fates of four characters: Jonathan Preest (Ryan Phillippe), an atheist vigilante who has vowed revenge on Meanwhile City’s leader; Emilia (Eva Green), a privileged young artist whose difficult relationship with her mother fuels her cynicism and depression; Milo (Sam Riley), a sensitive young man whose heart has been recently broken; and Peter (Bernard Hill), a deeply religious man who has come to London in search of his missing son, a troubled Gulf War veteran.

Here's a trailer. It's pretty poor quality, and seems to be really badly cut-together. But the film itself looks pretty good.

There is something wrong with that trailer and I don't mean just the fact it's horribly edited, it is jerky and out of sync.

Despite that I do like the look and premise of the movie, visually it's very interesting.

i have no idea what to think. i was hoping for a more dark knight, then darkman feel.

Looks interesting. Does anyone know if it's based off a book?

the trailer was cool

the character looks like that watchmen guy..

sorta reminds me of The Fall mixed with dark city and watchmen.

yeaaahh ill never remember how to type that correctly... let alone pronounce it.

it looks more like a mouthless jack skellington then "that watchmen guy"

The mask reminded me of the 9 characters.

Interesting little film. Surprised this is the first I'm hearing about it, and the trailer's already out.

Has anyone on here seen this? It seems to have a good reputation and I was tempted to buy it on DVD earlier, but i just want to hear a little bit more about it before I do.

Does anyone recommend it at all?

As spoiler-free as possible: Good film, but nothing at all spectacular. The cast is uniformly strong, but no performances are worth grabbing the DVD for specifically. The scenes that take place in the "alternate world" are certainly the best, excellent creation of another world on such a small budget, and whilst it's never noticeable that this is all penny-pinching, it's clear in that there is not a lot of time spent in the "alternate world" as one would hope. The story is not at all unique, it borrows, steals and copies themes from here and there, but it does manage to tie (most of) it all together quite well. I can't say it's great, and it's certainly not terrible. I would recommend it, but only if you're already intrigued enough by what you've already seen of it in trailers etc.

Looks interesting but someone ruined the ending for me and now I dont want to watch it.

I like the look of this. I want that mask for role-playing with the missus.

This is actually really helpful, thanks a lot, I have been more intrigued than totally interested by the trailers, and I needed something to watch tonight and this was one of the choices, this will help me make it, thanks a lot.

Wrote a review awhile back

http://rickshq.blogspot.com/2009/04/review-franklyn.html

Franklyn is the story of four individuals who feel incomplete and their explosive collision in a futuristic London setting......

.......at least from what I thought. Franklyn is easily the most miss-marketed movie of all time. In fact, 3 quarters of the film do not actually take place in the future. The quarter that was futuristic was easily the most intriguing. The aesthetic of Meanwhile City was gorgeous; it reminded me of Dark City except industrialized. The strange psuedo-theocratic government put into place was fascinating, and would have been a fantastic new element in science fiction, a genre that has been missing originality for some time at least in the cinema. And even though there are obvious similarities to Watchmen's Rorschach, Preest was still an entertaining and interesting protagonist.

Usually, Ryan Phillipe, who plays Preest, does nothing for me with the exception of Way of the Gun. These blunt, edgy, tough guy roles suit him better than most I think. The other 3 stories were also individually interesting, but together had little to do with each other until the end. This bouncing back and forth between the 4 did not feel organic.

Many of the fans of this film note the effectiveness of the filmmaker to portray mental illness unlike any other film has. I wish I could say something concrete about this but I have zero experience with mental illness, and to my knowledge I am not suffering from it (except the dellusions that people are in fact reading this blog).

The film does end up tying things together quite nicely in the end, except so much of it felt spoonfed to me. Before the ending revelation, we have already came to the conclusion that some things we were seeing were mostly dellusions by the characters, and the ending loses weight because of it. Of course, the line "It's not about who you leave behind, but the people you haven't met." It was a fantastic line and solidfied the ending perfectly, at least for 2 of the characters. The other two characters become more "weapons of fate" to bring the first 2 characters together, which justifies the minimal screentime of one and the seemingly irrelevent nature of the other.

I would have rather seen the entire movie take place in the future. The thematic elements of mental illness, a creator's resonsibility to their creation, and the how our own fate are intertwined with those around us are easily transferable and reinvigorate a genre that has been too "popcorn"-oriented in recent years.

Grade: 5/10

What happened with this movie? It didn't have any kind of distribution or anything?

I'll watch it because I'm in love with Eva Green, but haven't heard great things about it.
