Evacuation of Saigon, April 1975.

The US Ambassador to South Vietnam at the time was Graham Martin. He was previously ambo to Thailand. His foster son was a USMC 1st Lieutenant in 1965 and was killed near Chu Lai.

Martin had refused to believe South Vietnam would fall and had delayed the order to evacuate for several weeks. By the time Tan Son Nhut Airbase was being shelled, the collapse was inevitable. The way that US personnel knew the evacuation was commencing (code named Operation Frequent Wind) would be the Armed Forces Radio Network giving the coded message (Its 105 Degrees and Rising Fast) followed by the song "White Christmas". Thousands of South Vietnamese who had worked for the Americans were given access to the embassy to be evacuated. Offical orders for the USMC pilots were to evacuate the roughly 5000 Americans still in country.
To help get the South Vietnamese out, only 2-3 Americans would get on each chopper flight whereas around 45 SV's would get on. Technically orders were not being violated this way.

The Ambassador was also attempting to evacuate as many of the indigenous as possible, finally realizing that it was all collapsing. The flight from the carrier to the embassy and back was roughly 1 hour of flying time. The 75 USMC aircraft crews worked around the clock flying out personnel.

Following the end of the war, hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese were rounded up by the communist regieme and sent to "re-education camps". F rom former officers in the armed forces, to religious leaders, to employees of the Americans or the old government

They were never tried, judged or convicted of any crime. Many South Vietnamese men chose to flee on boats, but others had established lives and loved ones in Vietnam, so they did not flee, but entered these camps in hope of quickly reconciling with the new government and continuing their lives peacefully.

The hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese who were imprisoned in re-education camps from 1975 basically fell into two categories: 1) Those who were detained in re-education camps from 1975 because they collaborated with the other side during the war, and 2) Those who were arrested in the years after 1975 for attempting to exercise such democratic freedoms as those mentioned in Article 11 of the 1973 Paris Agreements. In other words, both categories of prisoners were held in direct violation of Article 11 of the 1973 Paris Agreements, an international treaty, and therefore of international law.

The Huey's used were not intended to be part of the evacuation from embassy personnel. They were memebers of the VNAF or ARVN who had taken their aircraft to evacuate their families and flew out to sea, not known whether or not they would have a place to land.

gJWL8cC.jpg

VNAF Chinook. Pilot left his base with his aircraft and picked up his family from a saigon neighborhood. Attempted to land on the USS Kirk, a destroyer escort, but was waved off for being too large. The pilot hovered near the flight deck and allowed his passengers to jump to the Kirk. He then flew to the starborad side of the Kirk.

The pilot jumped left of the aircraft as he made it dive right. The pilot survived with no injuries.

9ZquKQb.jpg

In total, about 75 USMC aircraft were used in the evacuation. The use of Helicopters to pull out the US and South Vietnamese was the last possible option.
The primary option was to use commerical shipping vessels at the port of Saigon and load up the personnel, sailing them out of harms way weeks earlier down the Saigon River.
Option 2 was to use Civilian Airlines at Tan Son Nhut Airbase.
Option 3 was to use Military Fixed Wing Aircraft from the same base.
Last was to fly out in helicopters.
When TSN was shelled by the NVA, it became clear that option 4 was the only option.

The US Embassy compound was the size of a city block. With only so many USMC guards, people were able to jump the fence to get in along the perimeter.

ha8GW4M.jpg

Tens of thousands were also evacuated by ship. The South Vietnamese Navy had roughly 32 vessels, most barely able to make sea. These ships, designed to hold around 200 people, were reguarly seen with over 2000 people. They managed to make it seaword.

557eMqK.jpg

When the Ambo was evacuated there were still around 440 South Vietnamese at the Embassy. President Ford ordered the evacuation to pull out the Ambo and any remaining US personnel, no more indigenous would be taken out.

When the USMC began to pull its remaining guards out, 11 Marines were left on the roof. No helicopters were coming back from them. According to one of them, Sergeant Juan Valdez, they were able to see NVA tanks in the distance heading towards the Embassy.

Finally, a USMC helicopter picked them up, the final americans were evacuated from Vietnam.

At the height of labor tensions culminating in the June dynamiting of the Miners' Union Hall, the riots that followed, and declaration of martial law in the city, Montana governor Sam Stewart sent the entirety of the Montana National Guard into Butte to break the strike, amid fears of an incursion by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Headquarters and barracks were established in the lavish courthouse and city hall, with gatlings placed in the street on either side and machine guns on the roof. Public meetings were prohibited. The city would remain officially under martial law until 1921 - the longest period of military occupation in the country's history since Reconstruction.

This is the Edmund Pettus Bridge. This bridge is famous as it is the site of the conflict of Bloody Sunday on March 7, 1965 in Alabama. That Sunday, an estimated 525 to 600 civil rights marchers headed east out of Selma on U.S. Highway 80. The march was led by John Lewis and the Reverend Hosea Williams, followed by Bob Mants and Albert Turner.

xnRkBSn.jpg

The protest went according to plan until the marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where they found a wall of state troopers waiting for them on the other side.

waxc5qD.jpg

Sheriff Jim Clark had issued an order for all white males in Dallas County over the age of twenty-one to report to the courthouse that morning to be deputized. Commanding officer John Cloud told the demonstrators to disband at once and go home. Williams tried to speak to the officer, but Cloud curtly informed him there was nothing to discuss.

EXZcGXr.jpg

Seconds later, the troopers began shoving the demonstrators. Many were knocked to the ground and beaten with nightsticks. Another detachment of troopers fired tear gas, and mounted troopers charged the crowd on horseback.

pOvikqF.jpg

Televised images of the brutal attack presented Americans with horrifying images of marchers left bloodied and severely injured, and roused support for the Selma Voting Rights Movement.

Overall, seventeen marchers were hospitalized, and the day was nicknamed "Bloody Sunday".

IF0RD5V.jpg

The shameful spectacle caused President Johnson to issue an immediate statement "deploring the brutality with which a number of Negro citizens of Alabama were treated..." He also promised to send a voting rights bill to Congress that week, although he did not do so.

3sSVFtg.jpg

Immediately after "Bloody Sunday," Bevel, Nash, King and others began organizing a second march to be held on Tuesday, March 9, 1965. Alabama denied them. On Sunday, March 21, close to 8,000 people assembled at Brown Chapel to commence the trek to Montgomery. Most of the participants were black, but some were white and some were Asian and Latino. Spiritual leaders of multiple races, religions, and creeds marched abreast with Dr. Martin Luther the King, including Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Rabbis Abraham Joshua Heschel and Maurice Davis, and at least one nun.

^^^^^

I watched the Barack Obama interview with David Letterman recently and the discussion about that bridge crossing/protest was very interesting.
