July 23, 1983 an Air Canada 767 jet ran out of fuel at 41,000 feet elevation but, thanks to the pilot’s experience in flying gliders, it made a miraculous deadstick landing at Gimli, Manitoba. No injuries to the 61 passengers or the festival goers attending a drag-racing event at the closed air force base where Captain Bob Pearson, 47, had planned to land. The plane was dubbed ‘The Gimli Glider’.

NASA deployed the first car in space, the Lunar Rover. It was a fully electric vehicle (Elon Musk was only one month old at the time). The Lunar Rover was 4x4 without a driveline or transfer cases since each wheel had its own electric motor. It also had four wheel steering. All controlled by a joystick. The Rover also had computer navigation. Data from a sundial, gyroscope, and odometer was fed into the main computer. NASA didn't want astronauts to get lost on the Moon!

This ethnographic film from 1913 offers a brief overview of the traditional culture of the Ainu, an ethnic minority in Japan.

The Ainu are the indigenous people of the lands surrounding the Sea of Okhotsk, including Hokkaido Island, Northeast Honshu Island, Sakhalin Island, the Kuril Islands, the Kamchatka Peninsula and Khabarovsk Krai, before the arrival of the Yamato Japanese and Russians. These regions are referred to as Ezo (蝦夷) in historical Japanese texts.

Official estimates place the total Ainu population of Japan at 25,000. Unofficial estimates place the total population at 200,000 or higher, as the near-total assimilation of the Ainu into Japanese society has resulted in many individuals of Ainu descent having no knowledge of their ancestry. In 1966 there were about 300 native Ainu speakers, while in 2008, there were about 100 native Ainu speakers.
