End-of-Summer solicts are in and it is time for my beginning-of-summer thoughts , musings, and rantings about 'em!
- Fool me once, and all that; I will not be bothering with ASTONISHING X-MEN after Whedon & Cassaday are done. Ellis & Bianchi do not interest me in the least. I will be curious if AXM still sells over 100k consistently with that creative team.
- Hey, someone is going to deal with the whole "Cyclops/deadbeat father/tossing his kid" into the future angle on CABLE. Not enough to make me read it, though.
- Some of the previews for the second recent stab at ETERNALS looked alright but following up Gaiman & Romita Jr.'s act is no easy feat.
- Fraction & Larroca got off to a solid start on INVINCIBLE IRON MAN and I can't wait to see how this storyline continues. They managed to hit all the right angles and make Stark more likable than some writers.
- Giffen? Spider-Man? Yeah, that KING SIZE SPIDER-MAN SUMMER SPECIAL sounds good for some one-off Spider-goodness. Kind of amazing how it works best without all that OMD/THE OTHER hooey.
- Of course, Joe Q would want something done with NYX, the franchise of his that took him years to finish, his own little bit of post-EIC late work, besides that DAREDEVIL: FATHER junk. I won't be bothering.
- Patsy Walker/Hellcat is a longtime Marvel heroine and while Kathryn Immonen's MCP story was weird and overrated, she has interest in the heroine and I could sense that energy. I am willing to give her mini a try. It is cute that Hellcat will be deployed to Alaska of all places, and it explains what she is doing away from THE LAST DEFENDERS.
- PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL has been a surprise hit from Fraction for me, he can do over-the-top VENTURE BROS. esque stories with the character and then do something serious and it all flows together well for me, at least save for the overlong Hate-Monger story. He's really becoming one of Marvel's breakout talents.
- Third time is the charm for FRONTLINE, at least SECRET INVASION lends itself more towards that sort of branch-out than WORLD WAR HULK did. Still, I won't be biting this time. Had about enough of Urich and Floyd that I could stand back in 2005-2006.
- I really didn't want to get any extra SI tie-in's that I wasn't normally, but THOR's has me interested.
- SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE refuses to die, even if McKeever is long gone.
- THE TWELVE #7 has a great cover, and I never knew Capt. Wonder had a sidekick. This series is really getting good and hopefully the team doesn't vanish into limbo after the finale like the Agents of Atlas have (yeah, they showed up in an issue of SPIDER-MAN FAMILY, but that hardly counts). Marvel needs an equalivent to the JSA, and the members of the Twelve that survive would be good for such a book. Even without it, though, JMS & Weston and making a great story.
- Many fans and creators have had issues with Eddie Brock's "out of nowhere" origin in ASM #300 and there have been many awkward retcons and writing moments in Venom's past once his fame skyrocketed. This seems like another in that vein but will it be too little, too late? I mean no one really cares much about Venom these days, least not the same as 10-15 years ago. Mac Gargan was handed the symbiote by Millar shamelessly to prove that point. S-M3 was last year (a FULL year ago) and it seems too late to suddenly want to bring back the Brock version. But, who knows.
- Yet another WOLVERINE one-shot. Y'know, just 'cuz.
- CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI-13 got off to a great start and the 4th issue looks to continue that. Guess Brian Braddock lives after all.
- Millar & Hitch's FF has also been going well, but is amazingly slipping in sales rather steadily. In interviews, Millar claimed he wanted to do a forward-moving story instead of doing a "Hush" and rattling off the FF's greatest rogues because of the artist, but gee, I see Doom and Galactus....right. Just own up, guy. If the story is worthy, we'll understand.
- GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY does a SI-esque tie-in, but considering they are in space, and the galaxy is in shambles, it makes sense. Plus, given that the space-books seem to be stuck in the 29k rut in terms of sales, the book may need the boost to stay afloat, as NOVA did. Still, one of the few tie-in's I am looking forward to, and at least DnA will get to play for another 2 issues beforehand; NOVA dove into THE INITIATIVE by the end of issue #1.
- IIM: THE ORIGIN OF DANNY RAND had Fraction & Kano from the launch of the series; I am SO there. Unless it is just reprints from Kano's flashback sequences, of course...
- "Change" is the thought-killing buzzworld of the political season and it is moderately annoying to see it come up in SECRET INVASION, even if it makes sense. I get tired of every event offering it and then seeking to mess up things from last year. A cleansing fire only works if you give seeds time to grow, and that usually is more than a year. Anyway, by issue #5, we may see if Bendis is on the road to redemption or down the toilet as usual. And of course we have all the spin-off mini's. The obligatory X-Men & Inhumans one, etc.
- If that is the final roster of THE LAST DEFENDERS #6, then all that Colossus talk will be a bait-and-switch, and even if the story is fun, I may feel a bit cheated. Colossus seems to miss every break.
- As always, CAPTAIN AMERICA is a great ride, but I hope Brubaker, Epting, & Co. aren't serious about ending their run at issue #50. I mean, that alone is a great run; creator runs lasting beyond a year and a half are rare, much less over FOUR years. I just couldn't get used to not getting this book. I don't think anyone besides Fraction could do it right, and he's extended all over the place. If JMS could stay on ASM for about 6-7 years, why can't Brubaker stay on this a little longer? Here's hoping...
- Did FOOLKILLER really do so well that he is getting a second MK series? Man, the sales standards must be low. How about more TERROR, INC.?
- The GHOST RIDER solict of course kills all the hype for the reveal that Marvel half-heartedly tried to build. Will they EVER learn? Anyway, Aaron's been off on a great run so far, I hope the book lasts long enough for him to do all that he wants. He's been steering Way's wreck fairly well.
- Hopefully the ending to KICK-ASS isn't as depressing or anti-climatic as a disturbing amount of Millar's Marvel work has been.
- Ah, MOON KNIGHT #21, and barring a miracle, I should be gone by issue #20 when the prior arc ends, and good riddance.
- Even the out-of-continuity POWER PACK have a Skrull tie-in? Marvel never learns. Especially since, ancedotal evidence suggested their recent mini without the team-up's is selling slightly better than the team-up's. Anyway, is there a reason why Power Pack isn't a children's cartoon? Without changing a thing, it has everything a network needs. Kid heroes, bright energy powers, animal themed characters, and a "don't tell the parents!" angst. They could even add Franklin from the start to have a Fantastic Four connection, like how LOSH had Superman (only hopefully not having Frankie hog). It seems like a no-brainer, but no, instead, Marvel wants a DTV starring, literally, Avengers Babies. Oy.
- X-MEN: FIRST CLASS chugs along with another fun adventure. Medusa is classic Silver Age Marvel. She popped up everywhere as "Madam Medusa".
- Leave it to a continuity fanboy like Dan Slott to insert the Skrull Kill Krew into SI with A:TI. Seriously, how could they NOT appear during an all out invasion by their target foes? And Caselli is back in the saddle, with a Mark Brooks cover that ain't too shabby, either. Can't wait for Slott's take on the wacky bunch. Brooks at least makes 3-D MAN's costume look better than Uy did.
- IMMORTAL IRON FIST without Brubaker & Fraction...that CABLE guy has one arc to impress me.
- NEW AVENGERS #44 revealing the primary theme of Bendis superhero stories; superheroes are bickering ******s whose actions lead to the very threat they are meant to prevent. I get tired of it, especially since so many called this.
- Glad to see NEW WARRIORS survive past a year, even if it may not be much longer if sales don't pick up. But this issue seems really good. It is great to see Grevioux & Slott working in tandum, like a cohesive universe with some of their shared characters. Amazing, right?
- NOVA as always looks great, even if Super-Skrull really shouldn't be a match for him anymore.
- RUNAWAYS decides to relaunch after the Whedon/Ryan run is over. Guess it has been so long I can understand. I also am interested that the YOUNG AVENGERS/RUNAWAYS isn't decompressed at only 3 chapters, and Chase gets his fistigons back, if the cover is actually accurate (which it may not be). If so, it is about damn time.
- A Spider-mini that merges SI and BND. Great. Throw in the Other and it could be a complete cluster****.
- USM is doing the late 90's trash, "Planet of the Symbiotes"!? Good lord, I am glad I fled that sinking ship, and I wasn't alone.
