Full New G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra Trailer Coming Friday

It really shouldn't matter which source they draw from. This is a Hollywood adaption, and like everything else not based on one source, was never, ever going to be as nuanced and exploratory as the comic book stories. This movie is clearly drawing from the cartoon, comics, and various other versions of the Joes.

I understand they're trying to draw from multiple mediums, but I grew up watching the cartoon and when I watch the trailer I see absolutely nothing that screams "GI JOE" except for Snake Eyes.

It suffers from the same problem as we always knew it would where in trying to be creative with "GI JOE" it ends up being nothing like GI JOE. Even if you hate Michael Bay's Transformers, at least it looks and feels like Transformers. If they cut Snake Eyes from these trailers they could put the title "SUPER SOLDIERS 3000" at the end and I'd have no idea it was supposed to be GI JOE originally.

Super Soldiers 3000 = Sci Fi channel original movie equivalent of GI Joe

Why do you think that is?

I think it's because what you grew up watching was a cartoon.

Designed from 1985-1989, and after that, derived from stuff that was designed from 1985-1989 and kept largely intact for tradition's sake.

It's 2009 now.

Yes, some things look different in live-action. There are still quite a few of the staples of GI JOE lore in this movie. The Baroness, the Joes themselves, and their technology, weapons, vehicles and secret underwater and underground bases are all pretty recognizeable. And yes, Snake Eyes, who was always one of the more recognizeable of the team.

It suffers from the same problem as we always knew it would where in trying to be creative with "GI JOE" it ends up being nothing like GI JOE.

"Nothing like" GI JOE?

Even if you hate Michael Bay's Transformers, at least it looks and feels like Transformers.

Not to a lot of TRANSFORMERS fans, who feel that specifically, Bumblee, Ratchet and Jazz looked next to nothing like their cartoon and comic book counterparts.

If anything, this movie looks as "outlandish" as it does because it's taken ideas presented in GI JOE lore and taken them too seriously.

I'm sorry but people take their childhoods way too seriously. I grew up watching Transformers, G.I. Joe, He-man, Voltron, and Thundercats, just like a lot of you did. And you know what, I have nothing but the best memories of those times and I remember how awesome I thought those cartoons were. But have you sat down and tried to watch old episodes of those shows? Thundercats, my favorite show as a kid, seems unwatchable now. Voltron, cheesy beyond belief. G.I. Joe, to ridiculous for words. Yes the 80's were awesome when you were a kid but you know what, these movies are far less cheesy and far more mature than those cartoons ever were. You are letting your memories get in the way of the truth. In order to make a G.I. Joe movie that looks just like cartoon you used to watch they'd have to make the most expensive poorly acted campy b-movie in the history of cinema. Now I don't know any studio that's willing to waste that kind of money. Just except these movies as what they are, mindless entertainment. Just like the cartoons were when you were too young to know any better.

From what I remember of the cartoon, which I loved as a kid, the trailer struck me as being very much in the same spirit. I think it's going to rock, and will definitely be seeing it.

But have you sat down and tried to watch old episodes of those shows?

Exactly. That's what I mean when I say that this movie may well have taken too much inspiration from the source material.

Even the COMICS, the most beloved of them, are often ridiculous.

The problem with this is that we arent talking about a Spongebob movie, where the bulk of its fans are still young. We're talking about GI Joe, and the fans of that concept are mostly 30-55 years old. You are now spending hundreds of millions of dollars attempting to satisfy a market that does not exist at this moment. The 30-55 year olds have matured, and if you as an adult still think that the cartoon is as compelling as when you were 10 then...you know...

If I was scripting the film, it would avoid stuff like Zartans shape shifting and Serpentor being a clone...just because I thought they were stupid when i was 10.

What I really want from this is a war/anti terrorism movie with characters I recognize. I dont need for Bazooka to be a borderline ******ed man, or Snow Job and Dusty to go on missions together in the Amazon. My support staff/cannon fodder would be Steeler, Clutch, Rock N Roll, Grunt, Zap...soldiers.

Yeah, if GI JOE tanks, that'll be the most likely reason. This stuff isn't in the public consciousness as much now. Granted, there have been cartoons every so often, and a constant flow of toys, but there's not the rapid fanbase for this that once existed.

I will also point out that (while I may be biased) GI Joe has one of the best rogues galleries in all of comic book/action franchises. Cobra Commander, Storm Shadow, Zartan, Destro, and The Baroness all being introduced in the first film is like having The Joker, Two Face, Penguin, Catwoman and Riddler in Batman Begins. I cant help but think that everyone will get shortchanged.

I understand that the concept has to be tweaked a bit for modern times (though Im not sure that green metal eating slime was really the way to go) but it seems to me like an origin story shouldnt even have Destro in it, since he runs a major arms manufacturer (and is not a member of Cobra) and in the beginning Cobra wouldnt have the resources to be buying his high end stuff.

This movie won't tank. It has explosions, car chases, and ninjas. Everything the GA wants.

The script solves this. Cobra has quite the resources at the end of it all.

Agreed...I tried watching Voltron and Thundercats recently...couldn't even make it through an entire ep without gagging...

The trailer came on Fox last night during King of the Hill...on the larger tv screen, I actually got hyped up for it, to be honest.

Do you think this movie looks good?

I appreciate the fact that they didn't attempt to make this look like more than what it was going for. You can tell by the "sh--ty" CGI at the end with the accelerator suits running like Gumby on acid.

Do you think this movie looks good.

The script isn't terrible. I think it looks fun. Haven't seen remotely enough to make the call on whether it'll be good or not.

I think it looks really cool. much better than I expected too. Kind of weird hearing Adewale talk in his natural accent but I'm sure we'll all get used to it.

I wish people would stop crapping all over this flick.

Transformers "looked and felt like" Transformers? I'm an fan of that franchise and I can say it most certainly did not. Thanks to Peter Cullen, it occasionally sounded like it but not much else. G.I. Joe looks more like it should than Transformers did.

Also, people keep saying that these old 80's cartoons aren't as good now as they were when we were all little and they're right....to a point. But what you need to remember is that for every 10 crappy joe or transformer or thundercats episode, there's one that(for whatever reason) works(even now). Almost every g.i. joe is about Cobra trying to take over the world with some stupid elaborate device/scheme but what makes it special are the incredibly vibrant characters and their personalities. Same with Transformers. I mean, "The return of Optimus Prime", "Fire in the Sky", "Heavy Metal War", all classics.

Like I said, MOST of the episodes of those old shows DO suck but let's not act like it's outright garbage. There are some real gems in every one of those shows that holds up against more obvious winners like X-men, Spider-man, or even the almighty Batman the animated series.

My favorite Transformers episodes were "The return of Optimus Prime", Fire on the mountain, The Ultimate Doom Series, The Quest for Survival, The Immobilzer, Microbots, A Prime Problem, Desertion of the Dinobot series, Golden Lagoon, and Key to Vector Sigma Series.

The only GI Joe episodes that I really enjoyed were the 5 part series. The Mass Device, Weatherdominator, Pyramid of Darkness, and Serpentor Arise. The movie was also okay. Unfortunately, most of the regular episodes were forgettable.

So because you're a big fan your opinion is more right than mine?

When I watched the second Transformers trailer (not the first crappy Mars one) I could instantly tell it was Transformers. GI JOE doesn't have the same effect, IMO.

Something that alot of people forget, is that Hollywood is not making this movie just for the people that grew up on it. This is a big budget movie, they want everyone to want to go see it.

Just saw the trailer, and i can tell you that it will be the biggest pile of crap this summer.
Not even saying that the trailer looks good or not, but the way it looks, and being direct by Stephen "i´m just a little better than Uwe Boll" Sommers, this will not end good.
As for the trailer, it looks way to cartoony, in a very, very bad way.

On a side note, how long will it take for EA to sue their asses?
Two masks in the movie look exactly like coming out of Army of Two, the suits look and are described as coming out of Crysis.
Do i need to go on?

The CGI looks pretty good in the HD trailer. This movie should have pretty epic battles at least.

grrr...i'm so torn with this film. On one hand the action and characters look great. I really like the suits...so in that regard it will be very entertaining...but dang it...i'm having a hard time getting over the horrible looking Cobra Commander.
