The Delta 6 suits are a "money shot." It's appealing to the casual audience, who will be accounting for the vast majority of this film's box office. It's a fancy looking special effects shot, and those tend to draw people in.
I'm pretty sure it is. They've altered two scenes, and combined them together for more tension. There's a scene where The Baroness goes to The Baron, who she makes weaponize some warheads she has stolen. Then she goes from there to the Eiffel Tower. In the script, The Joes catch up with her as she's leaving. It looks like here they arrive right after she's gotten that building, which must be where she now encounters Baron De Cobray.
Now, in the script, the Joes actually end up on the Eiffel Tower trying to shut down the warheads via a kill switch, which is where that Jump Jet picks up The Baroness for a quick escape. That may or may not be the case anymore.
Per the script, the Joes always chase her and Storm Shadow through the streets.
They fell behind, and then caught up to her again at the Eiffel Tower. Now it seems they catch up to her in the building after she's weaponized the warheads.
I can see their faces through the masks, but thats not the point. It is a CGI costume that does obscure the emotion of the scene, so they WILL ditch the costumes...just as Spider-Man has done in all 3 movies.
It's an action sequence, and when Duke needs to look desperate, you can see him looking desperate, etc, etc, etc.
They don't ditch the costumes.
Duke gets captured by "Cobra" and Ripcord and the others get arrested.
They dont want to give away the final battle, but they DO want to promote the movie in a manner that will make diehard fans angry, misrepresent the film, AND show what is likely the heaviest effects scenes??? That makes no sense whatsoever.
1. I don't know why they showed what they showed in the trailer. I gave the reasons why I think they showed so much of the chase and the suits above.
2. How are the trailers misrepresenting the film?
3. They may be the most effects-heavy sequence, but with GI JOE has quite a bit more in the "effects" department to offer viewers, as some of those really quick cuts hint at.
Again...the commercials are ABOUT the suits. they are NOT about GI Joe. If they actually spend that much money on bad CGI on suits the diehard fanbase would hate and that much commercial time on a small subplot while ignoring the rest then this movie deserves to fail even more than I already believe.
It's not a subplot, per se. The suits are a tool the Joes use, like Scarlett's crossbow or their many vehicles. The actual story points surrounding that sequence you see the suits used in are pivotal to the film's storyline.
I'm reasonably sure it is. They've altered two existing scenes, and basically combined them together for more tension. In the script, there's a scene where The Baroness goes to The Baron and makes him weaponize some warheads she has stolen. Then she goes from there to the Eiffel Tower chase sequence. In the script, The Joes catch up with her as she's leaving the Baron's lab. It looks like here they arrive right after she's gotten into that building (probably the lab's location).

I get what you're saying, but what key emotion exactly are getting obscured?
It's an action sequence, and when Duke or Ripcord need to look desperate, scared, or exhilirated, you will be able to see them looking these things.
They don't just randomly ditch the costumes.
Duke gets captured by "Cobra" and Ripcord and the others get arrested and detained after the incident at the Eiffel Tower.

1. I can understand fans being angry about things like Cobra Commander, but I have no idea why fans would be outright angry about what is shown in the trailer. What, GI Joes can't use advanced technology? Seems to me they sort of always have.
2. I don't know for sure why they showed what they showed in the trailer. I gave the reasons why I think they showed so much of the chase and the suits above. Not that they showed THAT much of it.

How are the commercials not about GI JOE? There are maybe 20 seconds of the suits (which also shows other things) out of a one hundred and twenty second trailer.

I get that they've become a sort of anchor point for people's perceptions about this film, but I don't see what's so laughable about the suits.
It's interesting...no one blinks when Iron Man clanks around, but a suit that does the exact same thing being used in a fairly kinetic action sequence and people suddenly scream "lame!"
Bay bashing is so tired... He's actually a competent director, but if you believed the things people write on the internet you'd think he was worse than Uwe Boll. The same thing has been happening to Stephen Sommers, but he has not had as many big hits so it's taken longer for the hater train to catch up with him. I've concluded that people on the internet simply enjoy bashing, no matter how unfounded their hatred is.
That's the problem. Bay has talent but often does he show it? The man could do wonders with a competent writing team but he's happy reveling in mediocrity. Also, he needs to increase his standard of humor...
Bay shows talent every time he directs a movie. He's an incredibly visual director, not a writer. He likes fun movies and melodrama, not deep stuff, and to the best of my knowledge, he's never pretended otherwise.
If he pretended to have some brilliant understanding of story and character and nuance, I would understand people not liking him, and the hatred spewed every time his name comes up. As such, I don't.
Exactly. Bay excels at making big fun action movies, and he knows that's what he's good at. Dark, cerebral dramas are not his thing, so I don't see why people get upset when he plays to his strengths rather than trying to pass himself off as being "deep." The same thing could be said of Stephen Sommers-- he makes fun movies with good action and likable characters, so it doesn't really matter that his movies aren't particularly thought provoking or dramatic. You watch them because you want to have a fun time at the movies, not because you want to have a deep philosophical conversation afterward.
Given how heavily both GI Joe and Transformers are banking on kids showing up in droves and buying the toys, doesn't it make more sense to go for a fun action movie than a deep and challenging drama?
Bay doesnt know character, story or nuance, so he replaced them with super suits.
When I think of GI Joe tech...in fact...when MOST Gi Joe fans think of the teams tech...they think of the Dragonfly, Skystriker, Vamp, Wolverine etc. We do NOT think of Eco Warriors, Dino-Hunters or Accelerator Suits.
So...errr...what's actually wrong with these accelerator suits? I think the idea of "Is it the equipment doing the work or the soldier" is a interesting concept.

It's mostly just internet hate. If James Cameron was making this movie everyone would be cheering and saying how awesome they'll be, but since it's Stephen Sommers and the internet doesn't like him, it's considered a terrible idea.
The CG for the suits is pretty good. It's only the green effect on the Eiffel Tower when it's being attacked that I don't like the look of. That and some of the vehicles look a little plastic-y, but we'll see.

I don't have as much of a problem with the suits as some of these die hard fans that read the comics. I only grew up watching the incredibly cheesy cartoon so I ended up skipping the comics...just like with Transformers.
With Iron Man...it's based on the comics, that's how it's supposed to be. With G.I. Joe the action should be more of the shootout kind. People firing guns and riding around in vehicles going at it.
I think a lot of the hardcore fans are just scared that the suits will replace the gun play just to make G.I. Joe cool and hip for the new generations.
I don't like the suits because they are stupid. I hate how the sequences with the suits look. And I don't like Tatum and Wayans are the ones wearing them.
Well guess what? Some of us are actually looking forward to this film. The Transformers fans who were looking forward to Michael Bay's movie had to wait through a lot of negativity from their fellow fans, but at the end of the day they got a movie that they liked and it turned out to be very successful. The kind of negativity I'm seeing towards GI Joe is like Transformers all over again, which is part of why I'm not particularly worried. Also, I've seen "The Mummy" like 20 times, so clearly Sommers is capable of entertaining me.
