He's from Bravos, if he were alive we would know it. Boldness in the face of enemies is a huge deal to them. If he lived he would have happily remained in the 7 kingdoms apart of the war and when not killing Lannisters would be talking about it.

When you get to the third book there's another Bravosi character who one can learn a lot about Syrio's attitudes from.

ehhh, I think that's false logic. He could have been taken prisoner, he could be laying low till he gets back to Bravosi, or he simply hasn't interacted with one of the POV characters yet. And remember all the things he taught Arya about truly seeing. Just because his nature is bold doesn't mean he isn't wise enough to stay down if there was a reason for it. GRRM loves playing games like this.

Without spoiling anything, does Sansa as a character get better later on? Because right now I just want to smack her.

This is only one woman's opinion, but she get's better. By the end of Clash of Kings you just want to give her a big ol'hug.

Plus, he strikes me to be neither political nor a sellsword. Thus, he wouldn't really have much of a reason to be 'killing Lannisters'. He protected Arya because she was a child and his student, as well as it being the noble/right thing to do in the situation; rather than 'because she's a Stark'. Had he been training Joffrey and Ned come looking for him, he'd probably have done the exact same thing.

A big wtf moment was when Lady Stark's sisters son started telling his mommy he was still hungry.

What I don't understand is why people, such as Sir Baristan Selmy, the old codger Maester, uphold the King's words on that piece of paper. Cersie should have been cut down for tearing up a king's edict that way. It makes no sense for people to have just gone with what she was saying rather than turning on the freaking Hand of the King.

Furthermore Joffery can't become King until he is of age, which he clearly is not, so how can people just forget all the rules and crown him King?

The words on the paper were that Eddard would be Protector of the Realm until robert's rightful heir is old enough to become king. All the queen did was say that Joffery was old enough and proclaimed him King. She pronounced Eddard a traitor for trying to usurp the crown for himself or Stannis... Well played by her. Sure Joff could use some seasoning...but the queen of the realm says he's ready and the hand says hes not...who do you listen to as a guard?.... the person who pays you.

NEVER did Ned actually out Joff as a Lannister love child and declare him unworthy of the throne (which he probably should have done)

All the queen did was say that Joffery was old enough and proclaimed him King. She pronounced Eddard a traitor for trying to usurp the crown for himself or Stannis... Well played by her. He didn't announce that the throne was his... only that he would be protector of the realm until the heir came of age... and that is what the king wanted. Ned had more than one opportunity to do "the right thing" and not the "honourable thing" by backing Renly or by bending the knee to Joffrey, then removing him later... but he chose war... and it cost him.... now he sits in a cell under the castle rotting at the mercy of King Joffrey and his mother.

I thought it was interesting when Lord Varys admonished Ned about telling Queen Cersei that he knew Joffrey was a bastard son and not of King Robert, and Ned didn't say anything in return. Ned knows his own weakness, yet he couldn't stop himself from doing it anyway.

You make a good point but he was hired by Ned and he had this really great and well fleshed out relationship with Ary. I think he would have fought on the side of the Starks, had he survived. Braavosi pride, loyalty to his employer, a genuine love for Ary. He didnt take the trip from Braavos to hide in a hole or rot in a dungeon.

But that's my take on it. Plus, most certainly he's not the other guy. Maybe he could return from the dead like a certain other person later on.

Ironically, what Ned was doing wouldn't at all be protecting Joffrey (or his two siblings) at all. Had Cersei fled (presumably back to her father), Robert would have come after them; leading to a Baratheon-Lannister war; in which the remaining six kingdoms would have all supported their king since it was obvious who was right and wrong. Robert would have won, and Joffrey would probably have been executed to mark the end of the dispute.

Had Ned just gone straight to Robert, the matter would have been resolved within King's Landing (assuming it would be made public in the first place). Here, Ned would be able to convince that the children were at least innocent and perhaps recommend them simply to be banished to Casterly Rock (House Lannister's seat of power), or perhaps the Wall for Joffrey.

In this world the Queen has no power. She is just the wife of the King. It's akin to the setup in England. The Queen has the "power and authority" from the line of succession, the guy married to her isn't the King nor does he have any power or authority at all.

On the other hand, The Hand of the King is a legitimate office and has the authority to rule the realms in the name of the King. We already saw the power of The Hand's Office when Ned made all those proclamations against the Mountain and the Lannisters.

lol, I can't believe I'm getting this worked up over this one aspect of the story but I think it is important to follow the rules of the game. So to speak.

but the Lannisters have all the money.....and as far as anyone cares to know, Joffrey is the firstborn "son" of Robert and the first in line for the throne, with Cersei as "Queen Regent"...basically meaning she has a measure of authority until Joff comes of age

The queen does have power in Westeros. Queens on a whole have power, if they wish to assert it or be cowed down. I could bring up examples but that'll be show more clearly eventually.

Now with her Queen Regent after Robert's death, she's effectivly a King till Joff is 15 and Tywin is the Hand so yup, it's a Lannister world.

I really believe Arya has a big role to play in the books.

Someone on another board suggested that the Faceless may send her to kill Jon at some point; either as the final test or because they were hired to. I think that's an interesting theory, and one that could really bring her back from the brink
