Since you guys mentioned the Genesis controller, I actually don't care for it anymore. At the time I liked it, but after using the PS controller for so long, the Genesis controller is just too flat. Your fingers get smooshed at the back. If it had grips it'd be great tho. I do give it props tho, hand positions aside, the six button controller was a thing of beauty.

The Snes controller was my favorite, although the Genesis 6-button was undoubtedly superior for fighting games. Even though I loved the Dreamcast, it actually made me mad that they abandoned the 6-button layout for 4 buttons because that's part of why Sega systems were so great for fighters. I think that the decline of 6-button fighters can be partially attributed to the failure of the Sega Saturn.

I haven't touched the Genesis in maybe 5 years. I'm not home that much so it's not really valuable to me.

My dad has Atari (2600 IIRC). The box is a bit beat up but the console doesn't work. He also has a lot of games still in their boxes which are in pretty good condition.

5 years?? All the more reason to play it now. It was about 4 years or less since I played the NES and N64..I had been playing the 360 so much, I hadn't touched hardly any of my old consoles. But the absenes made it worth playing.

For me, stuff like the Angry Video Game Nerd and Awesome Video Games really reignited my love for old games. Emulation is great for trying out games, but if you really love a game there's no substitute for the real thing. There's just something magical when you take an NES out of a box in the attic and fire up Mario Bros. 3 that nothing else quite touches.

Yeah, I know what you're thinking-- "Metroid, good... Ninja Gaiden, good... Spiritual Warfare-- wait, WTF?" yeah, I did indeed order a copy of this pathetic Zelda wannabe, for nostalgia purposes. When I was 7 years old and my mom came home from the Christian book store with this game in her hands, I wasn't about to shun it-- after all, when you're a kid without an allowance, any free game is one worth playing.

To be fair, Spiritual Warfare was Wisdom Tree's best game-- although that's not saying much. The real Legend of Zelda (which I already own in gold cart) is a superior game in every imaginable way, but I will always remember Spiritual Warfare as-- that crappy Bible game that mom brought home from the Christian book store that one day that was kind of like Zelda. But hey, I own the Jaws game, Batman Forever, and Clayfighter 2, so it's not like I'm not above owning crappy old games if I have nostalgia attached to them.

I have a habit of buying classic consoles games. My collection so far;

Commodore 64 (not technically a console but i'm adding it anyway, got it for xmas when I was a very wee lad)

Coleco ADAM (again not technically a console, but plays colecovision games so...)

Genesis
SNES

We have a Intellivision 2 and a few Colecovisions at work right now, unfortunately neither have any hookups included and I'm reluctant to pick them up without. Sadly I feel I will buy them anyway with hopes of finding cables online somewhere in the future.

Working at a thrift store is great for access to classic consoles/games.

What I'm REALLY looking for is a Magnovox Odyssey (with screen sheets) and a Vectrex.

I just bought a Score Master for my Super Nintendo (finally!), so I probably won't be buying any more retro games for a while because I just bought a bunch that I'm still waiting for in the mail. I really want to get Mega Man: Wily Wars though. It's so rare that in the US it didn't even get released, and on top of that it's a darned good game-- many say it's one of the best 16 bit Mega Man games ever made. I need to watch it with the spending though, or at this rate I won't have any money left to buy new games... Or ramen noodles, which are my life blood.

There's another game I can't remember...it's on the tip of my toungue tho, I remember liking it tho. It was a semi over head almost action RPG type game. You could use different items, almost like the tool set up in wildarms. Like one was a shadow, another was a grappling hook to latch onto things and cross gaps in the ground. I want to think it had sun in the name.

I got my Score Master and Sega Genesis came in the mail yesterday. It's obviously not as good as my arcade-accurate custom stick that I built, but it's a huge improvement over the Super Advantage, and most certainly a worthy successor to the NES Advantage in all respects. Now I just need to grab a fighting game better than Clay Fighter 2 to play with it, lol. (I'm thinking Killer Instinct and Super Street Fighter II will do the trick).

BTW, something I didn't expect with the model 2 Genesis is that the picture quality doesn't seem as good as on the model 1 system. Some parts of the graphics look kind of distorted, and the fidelity of the pixels seems to be generally lower. It still plays fine, but I think that I read somewhere that most model 2 Genesis systems used a cheaper visual processor than the Model 1 to cut costs. There are apparently some that have a better processor, but they're quite rare. Oh well, at least it plays fine. If a whole generation of gamer nerds could put up with it, so can I.

I just picked up another Sega Genesis off of eBay, and it arrived today. The reason why is because my current one was a VA1, which uses the crappy Samsung video chip that causes some rather nasty video problems. The new one is a VA3, which uses a Sony video chip for maximum win. The VA3 is a lot rarer too, so I'm glad I was able to get ahold of one.

Also, I made a custom clamshell case for Sonic & Knuckles. If any of you care to remember, the game originally released in a cardboard box (and those suck).

Now the Sonic quadrilogy can be proudly displayed on a shelf in proper fashion.

My bro and I's first console system was actually the Sega Master System. We both wanted NES, but one day when my family were shopping at Macy's (in New York), my mom suddenly asked if we would like to buy Master System. We both thought that it was the offer that we couldn't refused, because there is no guarantee that our mom would buy a NES later, so we said yes. We had some games for it, but I've always been disappointed that we missed out on those classic NES games.

Years later, we brought both Genesis and SNES, and SNES is still one of the best system we've ever owned, even though Genesis had many good games for it also.

I am part of the Atari 2600/NES era. I remember playing Spider-man and Adventure over and over again on the 2600. Berserk and Pitfall were other great time wasters for me. When the NES came out, it blew my mind. My favorite games were Contra, Metal Gear, Operation Wolf, and Golgo 13. When the Genesis and SNES debuted, my brother and I chose sides. I went with Sega and stayed "loyal" to Nintendo. My favorites were Streets of Rage, SFIICE, Golden Axe, Space Harrier II, Strider, and so many others. I got the Sega CD and remember my jaw hitting the floor when I first played Sonic CD. I still have the Gen1 Genisis, Gen1 Sega CD, and Super NES. I am currently getting my but handed to me in Contra III actually. Good times. The gaming world seemed a lot simpler back in the day.

Personally I love MM9. Enough in fact that I kept trying the time trials until I got in the top 30 in a few of the lvls lol (probably got dropped back a bit now tho since it's been awhile since I played last). It's MM2 simple, but fun and addicting. Plus there's quite a bit of DLC content to keep replay value high.

I also bought SF2 HD Remix and can highly recommend it to. A lot of ppl were trying to say it's just SF2 Championship edition with the resolution turned up, but it's honestly not. The sprites, backgrounds, remixed music, balancing, even some of the button combinations have all been improved. Also the online play is a huge bonus, lots of good (and lots of cheap) players online.

Sega Master System

Most of you probably did not have one of these, even if you've heard of it. Sega's unlucky workhorse in the 8-bit era did not put up much of a fight against Nintendo's juggernaut, but it is well known for having better graphics and sound, and multiplatform games, while somewhat of a rarity in those days, were typically better on Sega's system. Its legacy is that it was a better piece of hardware than the NES, and that it had a decent amount of solid games, but unfortunately the market just wasn't quite ready for a two machine console war.

my first REAL console!!! i used to love this thing. i remember my dad bought 2 joysticks for them. they were left handed but video games were new at the time so we didn't care. we played left handed anyway! hehe

one of cool things about this system is that it had a slot (to the right of the controller plugs) where you could insert game cards. they were basically these wallet sized cards that hold full games. i remember Spy vs Spy was the only type of gamer card i had. i used to think those cards were so cool and i was convinced that they'd take over cartridges.

For as long as I can remember, it's driven me nuts that A Link to the Past is one of the best games in the Zelda series, and yet it was the only one released on a cart-based console that didn't get the illustrious gold cartridge treatment. Well, today I took matters into my own hands, and modded my copy of the game to look closer in line to what I felt it ought to. Half a can of spray enamel and a sheet of metallic paper later, I got what I wanted.

The cartridge absolutely glows in the beauty of its new reflective sheen. And best of all, the label is printed on metallic paper, it has a holographic effect similar to what you see on a lot of fancy DVD case. Here's an alternate angle to give you some idea as to how it looks.

At long last, A Link to the Past can stand with its siblings proudly on a shelf, knowing that it does not look out of place. That's one less thing that will keep me up at night.
