Gamers' Legacy: retro console discussion thread

I've composed a list of some games I'm going to get.

Genesis
Shinobi III
Revenge of Shinobi
Earthworm Jim 2
Strider
Gunstar Heroes
Rocket Knight Adventures
Toe Jam & Earl
TMNT Hyperstone Heist
Ecco the Dolphin

NES
Contra
Dr. Mario
Mega Man 2
Mega Man 3
Mega Man 6
Mike Tyson's Punch Out
Ninja Gaiden

SNES
Star Fox
Super Mario Kart
TMNT Turtles in Time
Gradius 3
UN Squadron
Contra 3
Mega Man X
Mega Man X3

I also want to get Mortal Kombat. Which version should I get? Same question for Street Fighter. Seems like the best options are Street Fighter 2 Tubor and Super Street Fighter 2.

Seems like my Sonic Spinball and Adventures of Batman and Robin are dead. Tried cleaning of them. Spinball just shows a black screen, no more "Produced or License by Sega." Batman shows that but then goes black. I'm a bit sad that Spinball is dead since my Genesis came with it.

I just recently found my old Sega Genesis when moving into my own place. I never had a lot of games, nor was much of a gamer (up until PS3), but here's the games that were in the box:

Jurassic Park (hell yeah, i loved this game! probably the best movie game ever)
Earthworm Jim (a classic)
Sonic
Sonic and Knuckles
Booger Man (stupid, but fun game)
Golden Axe
Toe Jam and Earl (veeeery fun game, even my parents dug it)

What about the original Playstation and N64? Or is that too soon?

Definitely get an N64 if you don't have one. So many great games. The one thing you'd have to be wary with is the controllers. The analog sticks can be really worn down. My friend has 3 that are horribly worn down. Luckily, I always used 1 so my other 2 are perfect. Unless it's in package, I wouldn't buy online.

For Original PS1, just buy a PS2. Just more convenient to have a new system.

Man, I can really show my age and trump almost every console shown here.

Not only did I own a Colecovision (an Atari competitor) but I also owned the Magnavox home gaming system which my Dad bought at a yard sale in the early 80's so I'm guessing it dates back to the early 70's or so, pre-Atari.

Colecovision (forgot how much it looks like a defibrulator :) )

I had an Intellivision that I got from my uncle... The controllers weren't much better, but at least they had those fancy overlays so you could tell what the crap that little keypad was for. :p

I finally got my Genesis working (moved the switch on the little box that connects to the antenna jack). All of my games except Sonic Spinball and Adventures of Batman & Robin work. Those 2 just show the "Licensed by Sega" thing and then go black.

Try cleaning them with rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip. I thought my copy of Sonic 2 was dead a while ago, but then it turned out that I just hadn't cleaned it thoroughly enough.

I have several times. Spinball used to show the "Produced..." thing. After the last time nothing showed up. Adv of Batman just keeps showing the "Produced..." thing.

My first gaming machine was the

Philips Videopac G7000 (aka. Magnavox Odyssey²)

Followed by

Sinclair ZX Spectrum

Then it was my beloved (minus the monitor and floppy disk add on)

772px-Amiga500_system.jpg

Commodore Amiga 500
The first to have a operating system, capable of multitasking and was used as model to create Windows (look at the pic, and tell me if it doesn´t look like Windows).

After that it was the PC, and my first console, the PS1.
At last, we arrive to last gen, the PS2, followed by this gen, the Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS (my first portable and Nintendo console).

Just won an auction on ebay for Shinobi III and Mortal Kombat II for $13. They even come with the cases.

Ok, so I decided to take some pics of my stuff.
Mind you that the shelves I have for my consoles aren't NEARLY big enough to properly display them but you can still pretty much see what's there.
Hopefully soon I'll get a better shelving unit.

nice

were you able just to retro-actively collect all of those? Or did you actually own them all when they were current?

Sadly the only one of those systems that pre-dates me is the Odyssey. LOL

Remember that game called Radar Rat Race on C64 that was basically a Rally-X clone?

I owned a C64, no disk drive just the slow as hell tape drive. The next system I ever got was an NES many years later. Both kicked the bucket though.
Everything there has been collected (re-collected).
I do believe my dad still has the old C64 tape drive and some game tapes and cartridges.

Working at a second hand store is great for collecting this kind of stuff though. We just got in 3 old nintendo Game & Watch handhelds (the ones from the early 80s). They priced them FAR too high though.

Just found this guy on YouTube called the "Happy Video Game Nerd." He's actually pretty good. He doesn't try to rip off AVGN (like Irate Gamer does). He reviews good games and talks about their history or what they were based off. In his EarthBound review, he talked about the history of Mother (why we never got it) and Mother 3. In his DuckTales review he talked about how the show was ground-breaking.

My friend and I went into the city to check out 2 game stores in NYC. One was Play N Trade. Their retro collection was pretty limited. I didn't see the prices of everything but I checked Toe Jam & Earl and it was $40 which was nuts. We also checked Video Games New York. They had a lot of stuff. Their cheap and common stuff was priced alright. But the more popular/rare stuff was insane. EarthBound was $100. Super Metroid was $50 (boxed was $100). SMW was $35. They had a display case of a lot of old stuff like ROB, a boxed NES, old Game & Watch handhelds, and an old Viritual Boy display that must have been at a store. It was neat to see all that stuff but the prices were nuts.

Anyone on here ever play, own, or remember Monster Party?

Monster%20Party.jpg

Definately the most bizarre game I've ever owned. And it had, quite possibly, some of the strangest bosses in video game history. Including, but not limited to, a giant talking fried shrimp:

Look out baby! :woot:

I'm so happy about the new online trend of being able to download old games, my shelves were quickly starting to resemble that. I've been able to download just about every old game I really wanted through X-Box Live Arcade or Virtual Console.

Xbox and Nintendo are doing great with their old game downloads but it's just not the same as playing them on the classic systems in my opinion.
I totally plan on building on my collection.

Todays purchases:
Donkey Kong and Pac-man (2600)
Mario Kart 64 (N64)
Ninja Gaiden, Golf (NES)

and going to pick up a Sinclair 1000 (ZX-81) tomorrow if it's still there...let's hope.

I work at a second hand store (value village) so I get most of them there.
I will buy games at the local vintage game store too. They have a pretty good selection but the prices aren't nearly as good as I can get where I work (especially with my discount factored in).

I got my dad's Atari 2600 out of the attic. Years ago he brought it down but it didn't work. I tried it again now but no luck. I'm going to try to get it working this summer. He bought it as a "Factory Reconditioned" so my chances are probably not great. I think the adapter might be the problem. The wiring is all twisted and the part that connects the wire to the brick is bent, it might be broken inside.

Does the 2600 controller work with the Genesis? I know the Genesis works with the 2600. I thought the 2600 might work with a game like Sonic where the buttons all do the same thing.

Today, I was in Salvation Army and I found an old NES cart for about $1.50. The name of the game is "double dribble," and I've never heard of it before. But hey, if I see an NES cart for $1.50, I'm in, and it even came with a case.

Downside is, my NES is at home, and I won't be able to play it for at least another week. But hey, who cares, right? :p

I remember Double Dribble being a pretty fun game, but it's been years so don't take my word for it.

Today's haul:
Mercs, Batman:revenge of the joker (Genesis)
Mario Party 3 (N64)
Star Voyager, Adventure Island II, Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet, Cobra Triangle, TMNT:the arcade game, Tetris 2 (NES)

and the big score, I picked up a SINCLAIR 1000 (ZX-81 for the europeans). Nice little computer from 82.

I've never tried to use an atari controller on a genesis, I would try it out myself but I don't actually have any atari controllers at the moment, just paddles. I use genesis controllers for now.
