I recognize that Johansson, Ali and Bailey are charismatic and likeable enough to somehow made their
(non) characters kind of work and being automatically more competent leads than Pratt and Dallas Howard but... I just found that movie so rough to watch.
Maybe I live on Earth-2, but as bad as the modern trilogy was,
Rebirth –while certainly more entertaining– felt actually kind of
worse to me.
The Snickers wrapper that puts a laboratory security system out of whack, the very “video game”-like quest to collect dinosaur blood from various elements, that obnoxious stoner guy, the cartoon scene where he's peeing, the caricatured businessman antagonist, that incredibly silly dialogue between characters who are talking about their past that I could swear was generated by ChatGPT, everything about the D-Rex
(made me wonder what that "d" really stand for)...
I get that the franchise, by pursuing Spielberg's adaptation, has nothing left to say about the original subtext and is now forced to dive hard into pulp adventures. And I can accept that.
In fact, several scenes in the film reminded me of how I used to play
“Jurassic Park” in the bush as a kid in the 90s, which mainly involved running around, hiding, and shooting like crazy with my wooden rifle..
But I'm convinced it all could be done with more care and rigor.
The film otherwise had some cool and atmospheric visual, but since it is the seventh installment and cost millions of dollars to make, I can't consider this much a feat. Yet, Edward still managed to have his creatures' height change very noticeably from one shot to another, adding confusion to the occasional consternation.
Anyway... All this rambling won't matter anymore when I go back to the movies in two years.
