Sci-Fi Gareth Edwards's Jurassic World Rebirth

Liking these casting rumors. Always love me some more Jurassic. 🦖🦕

Considering how schlocky this franchise has become I would be all in for this to be titled Jurassic Park 7: Jurassic World 4
This just reminds me of when somebody had the idea of calling Fallen Kingdom "The Lost Park: Jurassic World". It might have been someone on these boards who suggested it as a joke but kidding aside it would have been a better title than Fallen Kingdom. It also makes total sense plot-wise.

Let's split the difference and call it Jurassic Park 4.
Ironically this is what I hoped Dominion would spiritually turn out to be. And then the movie came out.

Though I have some hopes in regards to the tone Gareth Edwards will bring here. He's a much stronger director compared to Trevorrow imo.

Haha, Fallen Kingdom is such a fascinating mess to me. There's something karma-like about them looking at a sequel like The Lost World (which was divisive) and scoffing and thinking "we can make this movie again today but make it amazing" yet they somehow don't make anything better and make a lot of new things worse.

I know some people are excited for this 7th movie in the franchise and I don't mean to be a negative nancy but after the last 2 movies I have close to zero faith there will be anything good to come out of this. And I'm even forgiving of TLW and JP3 which a lot of fans aren't. I know the classic Ian Malcolm scene from JP has been memed about this franchise now for a while that they "were preoccupied with whether they could and didn't stop to think if they should" but I feel like we're so far beyond that point now that it's crazy.

If anything, Fallen Kingdom and Dominion only make The Lost World and Jurassic Park III look better by comparison.

Since the original is one of my all-time favorite movies I'll always be down for another Jurassic movie. At the end of the day the franchise is still in better shape than something like the Terminator or Transformers movies. Dominion is the worst one but there were still a few moments in it that I enjoyed.

Fallen Kingdom is the first movie I've seen where I feel the writers took a look at all the annoying cliches I personally dislike and decided to put them all in it in order to tick me off. It's honestly kind of baffling, and it's not even so dumb it's enjoyable if you turn your brain off, it actively feels like it insults your intelligence. :funny:

One big reason why I can't take Fallen Kingdom or Dominion seriously is that the dinosaurs only kill antagonists, with the exception being that one guy on the scooter in Italy in Dominion. There are no stakes. Especially with Dominion. Fallen Kingdom at least had some fun deaths but in Dominion barely anyone got eaten.

Yep. I think Trevorrow took the Zara death controversy too much to heart and absolutely refused to have any character on the moral side of things is killed off by a dinosaur afterwards. It removes so much tension and was ultimately a detriment.

Hopefully Gareth Edwards does away with that stupid change in this.

Yep. If she had simply been killed by the pteranodons I don't think there would have been nearly as much controversy but because she was the first female death in the series it shone more of a spotlight on it being over the top and mean-spirited.

Although on the other hand, I don't think I'd have really cared much at all if any of the protagonist characters introduced in Fallen Kingdom or Dominion were eaten anyway with the only exception being DeWanda Wise's character.

You look at the original (what a masterpice that one is) and the characters are just nuanced. Aside from Nedry being a slimy worm you don't really have any evil characters. The lawyer is only out to save himself and Hammond is in over his head but it's a movie where characters feel grounded and like real people. I would say this feel still carries over to TLW and JP3 even if the characters aren't as strong. Even in TLW where you got the 'evil poachers' only a few of them are actually bad and some of them you even like or see the humanity in.

Then you get to the JW trilogy and the characters are either a doe-eyed "want to save humanity and dinosaurs" good guy or a moustache twirling bad guy. And of course the dinosaurs almost only go for the bad guys. The dinosaurs went from feeling like real predatory animals who would go for anyone in the close vicinity to becoming super heroes who show up when our good guys are cornered so they can save the day and then leave.

I don't know, I would say Ludlow is quite a cartoonishly one-note villain.
Yes and no. He was one-note but he didn't have enough of a personality to be cartoonish. :o

Ludlow’s death was even set up as a “cheer” moment with baby T-Rex finishing him off. It’s kinda odd lol

But TLW also has the most cruel death for Eddie Carr who was trying to save everybody and got split in two.

Agreed on all the above that there has to be danger to the "good" hero characters too to keep up the suspense in this kind of film. We might enjoy the baddies getting their comeuppance, but we need tension too and to respect that the dinosaurs are glorious creatures but also very dangerous to frail human bodies.

I think another issue is just tone in general. It's the MCU effect of modern blockbusters where every movie has to undercut a serious moment with a joke. Don't get me wrong the first 3 films had some humor and funny moments but it felt better balanced. The first movie has funny moments like Grant improvising the belt during the landing or Malcolm having some funny one-liners but the intense and scary parts didn't feel light hearted and jokey. Fallen Kingdom on the other hand has a scene where a dinosaur fakes being passed out, winks at the camera and takes out a bad guy. The same dinosaur that is the "apex of any creature that walked on earth" but constantly shifts in portrayal from being incredibly smart to not being able to smell humans a few feet away from his nose hiding behind a statue.

Did a dino really wink at the camera in Fallen Kingdom? I'd love to see that clip. I've only watched that horrible movie once and that was in theaters. I don't think I can take a rewatch.
