George Lucas Claims Racism Reason for Lack of Studio Support for 'Red Tails'

Even those black comedies like Soul Plane are self-financed movies. The amount of movies with all black casts Hollywood makes you caould count on one hand.

Yeah, but it's not true. Studios support all black casts all the time. There are all black casts films that come out just about every month. Think about all the trailers for films with all black casts. Usually they do well at the B.O., and the studio knows that. Tyler Perry films, Cedric The Entertainer, Ice-Cube and more I can't think of. Hollywood has made all black films going back from before The Wiz.

As others have said, he was talking about movies with significant budgets, by major studios. A rare occurance.

Lucas is a cry baby who is still upset that The Star Wars Prequels were not well received.

Those crappy movies made lots of money, so I doubt he's too upset.

I'm pretty sure Hollywood's attitude was let Lucas pay for it himself if he wanted to make it so bad. Remember, not only do they have a bias against blacks except in the stereotypical hood and 21st Century Amos and Andy stuff like Tyler Perry's movies, but they also hate Lucas.
AKA it's a silly nonprofitable idea it Won't be profitable because they never have been (disregard the fact that it's never been done) so we won't do it and if you do...we won't support it... but if it makes money we Sure would like to help with the other ones :whatever:

But that's what movie studios do with everything.

I didn't even know Red Tails had British actor David Oyelowo in.
His been in some very suceessful recent movies Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes and The Help.

Has anyone pointed out yet that Lucas is a pretty big racist himself? :o

How so? I've never heard that.

I'm surprised nobody has pointed out that maybe he didn't get funding because he just plain sucks. Look at the prequels, look at the last Indiana Jones. They were absolute trash terrible. Someone would have to pay me for me to watch them again.
I'm not saying racism wasn't necessarily a factor (I agree there is still racism in hollywood), I'm just saying I wouldn't invest my piggy bank money on his talent. (yes I'm being hyperbolic).

Yeah, and he's quite the chameleon too. Every movie I've seen him in, he's a completely different kind of character. I didn't even realize he was the same guy.

Why, because of Jar Jar? I don't think he was being intentionally derogatory at all, but his awareness of potential offensiveness when it comes to characters put on film needed some help is all.

George Lucas girlfriend is Mellody Hobson who is black so his not a racist.

The arguement that Red Tails wouldn't get financed because the Star Wars prequels and Indiana Jones 4 were bad movies doesn't add up as his been trying to get Red Tails made for 20 years long before either of those movies came out.

Also George Lucas didn't direct Red Tails he wrote and produced it.

Far worst looking movies than Red Tails with far worst actors and far worst people behind them than George Lucas have been made by major Hollywood studios with lesser known actors than the ones in this movie.

Am I the only one who liked the prequels? :/
As obvious as their faults were, I still enjoyed them as decent entertainment, especially Ep III. I never crossed over that line into augmentation where the movie faults needed to be exploded and exaggerated just because they were Star Wars movies (i.e., Red Letter Media reviews..etc).

Jar Jar.

Watto.

Nute Gunray.

Sand people, even.

Lucas definitely has some subconscious racial awareness going on.

I really didn't like the Star Wars prequels and I paid to see all three :csad:

But that's what movie studios do with everything.
and that is what Lucas is saying... it becomes more of a problem when we have Fantastic stories not being told that are being championed by extremely financially proven producers...

Yes there was. I enjoyed that one and I am looking forward to this one. I think it's an important part of history and it should be celebrated and showcased for everyone to see and learn and be proud of what men and women of all colors have done for this great country of ours.

Wasn't Cuba Gooding Jr. in that one as well?

Reading this, I can't help but think that maybe studios aren't supporting Lucas because of Lucas. He's not a good filmmaker, and he gave Hollywood the finger like 40 years ago.

Nah, like I said, it has nothing to do with being racist though, especially when you look at the Sand people. It's no more offensive than a lot of other fictional characters we've seen stereotyped in certain films. No big deal--and as a Black guy, I've forgiven the Jar Jar character a long time ago; he was just thrown in there mostly for kids--the decision for his dialect just was not the best decision in the world.

Im sorry, its all way too coincidental.

I'm not suggesting you go all Black Panther on George, but I think it's pretty obvious subtle racism permeates even people devoted to diversity.

Here, here is a pizza. I made two way better pizzas that are in the back and you can have them if you eat all of this pizza first and love it.

Aaaaa-ha-ha-ha-haaaa....!

Indiana Jones made $786,636,033 off a budget of $185 million and got 77% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Internet fanboys may dislike the movie but it was a success and I say that as someone who loves the Indiana Jones movies (especially Raiders) and found Crystal Skulls flawed yet ok.
