Given how important this election is to President-elect Biden’s ability to lead America through this crisis. I’d figure I make a thread just to discuss this very crucial election. An election I argue is just as important as the presidential election last November.

If Dems can pull off a miracle and win those two senate seats in Georgia then Biden will be infinitely more effective at getting things done like a more substantial covid relief bill that gives Americans way more than a measly $600 dollars for an entire year.

However, if the GOP wins this election and David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler(or even just one of them) retain their senate seats then the GOP retains their control on the senate. Which means the next four years of a Democrat lead White House is going to be severely hampered by a hostile opposition that will basically block any major legislation Biden tries to get through Congress. It’ll basically be a repeat of Obama’s last term in office where he was met with fierce partisan obstruction. Only this time the partisan obstruction will occur when the country is in the midst of deadly pandemic that’s already lead to millions of people losing their jobs , evictions, and of course is killing thousands of Americans everyday.

So the stakes couldn’t be higher. If Mitch McConnell remains senate majority leader for the next four years then many more people will suffer because this ugly, heartless, decrepit, bastard(along with those like him like Rand Paul) doesn’t seem to have a semblance of compassion for those who don’t have millions of dollars in their bank account. Mitch will see to it that Biden barley gets anything done. No matter how much Biden tries to coddle him, the GOP-controlled senate will be a stubborn partisan nightmare to Biden; seriously hamstringing his ability to get anything meaningful done. Therefore millions of Americans will suffer and die as a result. So it’s very important the Dems take control of the senate. Fingers crossed.

Probably going to ignore this election until it's called cause I don't want to be disappointed or hopeful all day.

From my earlier post in the Ridin' with Biden thread. I'll consider this relevant.

++++++++++++++

It occurs to me that we might get a pretty good idea what will happen in GA earlier than you might think.

We just had an election and have a baseline for voter turnout on that election day. The day of votes will be counted first and we should get a pretty good idea whether there is an appreciable change in the number of people who voted on election day in key counties and precincts. A substantially lower or higher turnout in the various repub or dem leaning areas "could" give us a pretty clear picture of what the results will be. We know there is about 115000 new voters that didn't vote in November and they seem to skew dem. My general feeling (based on logic) is that the motivated Trump voter will tend to not be in this group.

I think any good election analyst (Steve Kornacki for example) will be doing a 11/3 to 1/5 day of voting analysis and may be able to give us some pretty good clues about what the outcome will be if there are substantial changes in the voting patterns.

What think?

Should we have a GA runoff election thread?

This right here.

I'm steeling myself for disappointment. Republican enthusiasm (and constantly winning runoffs) is set in GA history. Given that Stacey Abrams and other grassroots voting organizations have significantly upped the groundwork over decades and did in-person canvassing nonstop since early November -- it could be anybody's win.

I'll be sending you constant PMs. :p LOL.

I think we could figure this out sooner than some think.

Ossoff just made the point that needed to be made. Your stimulus check depends on getting McConnell out of senate leadership and the only way to do that is to elect Warnock and Ossoff.

I hate that this is what we're dumbing it down to. Dangle $1400 in front of voters because these moronic imbeciles can't comprehend that continued Senate gridlock (at the hands of one man) and voting in thinly-veiled racism/fascism are the real long-term problems at stake.

100% agree.

That's politics, huh? The Dems are lining up to talk about a stimulus check and the Repubs are lining up to stick their nose up Trump's @$$ (sorry for the image) when we should be talking about the subversion and undermining of what democracy does exist.

That being said, I know which line I would select.

LOL. Well aren't we a bunch of Pollyannas. You all have good reason to be skeptical. The general election numbers favor the repubs as does runoff history. That being said, Trump is no longer on the ticket and has tended to focus more on his own grievances than whipping up support for the candidates. The day of vote will be interesting. Let's see how it stacks up with the general election numbers in predominantly red areas.

That wait time line is bull****.

Still hard to win in Georgia. It would be awesome if it happens but know how hard that it is.

2018 House vote totals (2 party vote)
Democrats: 1,814,469 (47.7%)
Republicans: 1,987,191 (52.3%)

2018 Governor vote totals (2 party vote)
Abrams (D): 1,923,685 (49.3%)
Kemp (R): 1,978,408 (50.7%)

2020 House vote totals (2 party vote)
Democrats: 2,393,089 (49.0%)
Republicans: 2,490,396 (51.0%)

2020 Presidential vote totals (2 party vote)
Biden (D): 2,473,633 (50.1%) (first Democratic presidential candidate to win state since 1992)
Trump (R): 2,461,854 (49.9%)

No candidate received >50% in the two Senate elections which is why there is a run-off today.

I sort of disagree. Yes, long term problems shouldn’t take the backburner, but people need help literally right NOW. Someone who has to steal baby formula doesn’t have the bandwidth to care about the long term. People are homeless, jobless, starving, and dying NOW. We need this to be like he framed it: voting for us is the ONLY way you get help as soon as possible.

I agree with this and, at the same time, recognize we've got some big time, long term structural problems that have done nothing but gotten worse. Man, I wish I knew for sure what the correct course of action was for each and every problem. Was electing Trump something that might be a plus for us long term? Maybe, but I can't justify that with having a flat out fascist running the country. I think we're in the position of making the best choice on the table, but our long term goal should be to set another table to sit at.

I think what @BeserkerHilf was driving at is that it sucks that people seem to have an inability to see how the decisions we make affect us in the long term.

Thanks to absentee mail voting...which he wants to end.

Have there been any numbers on absentee voters yet or percentage compared to November? I thought I had read somewhere there hadn't been that large of a drop off so if this is true, this is excellent news if they've only started seeing a slowdown in voting today.

I expect 1-1. I guess Loeffler's the most likely to lose.

News over here mentioned that all main-in ballots might not make it on time.

I expect 2/0 either way. I don't see a whole lot of split ballots on this one.

There was a drop off in early voting in GA of about 900,000 votes (3.1 to 4M). The total vote in November was a bit under 5M. Early information is that Dems are doing a bit better than they did in November in the early voting. The day of voting will be reported fairly early, but early voting is expected to not be as drawn out as it was in Nov.

The danger is less split tickets, but people only voting for one of the candidates. Which is what happened a lot in the general election.

Still, I am hopeful for Warnock. He is a much stronger candidate.
