Comedy Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Bummer.

I'm getting a feeling this will be the final live action Ghostbusters sequel.

Afterlife had a much higher audience score than it did a critic score, so I ain't getting too downhearted just yet.

I'm not even remotely concerned about what the critics say about Frozen Empire. After enjoying Afterlife, they've earned by cinema fee & I'll make my own mind up.

These are the same critics that effectively claim Ghostbusters (2016), was a better film than Ghostbusters II & even Ghostbusters: Afterlife..

Afterlife for me was mixed and average out into it was okay. The critic comments here don't inspire confidence. Seems to indicate much of what I didn't like there was doubled down on here

Yeah, not too phased by the reviews.

I'm not expecting a masterpiece here, the trailers sold me on a fun Ghostbusters adventure for fans of the franchise and it sounds like that's likely what it'll be. I mean it would've been great if it had exceeded expectations and won over some Afterlife critics with something truly special, but I think my expectations are in the right place. And I've also just come to accept after 2016 that there are a lot of people out there who simply don't view the franchise in the same way many of the fans do. Looking forward to seeing this at Alamo Drafthouse on Saturday and making up my own mind.

Yeah, I don’t trust critics on this one. Just look at their score for Afterlife.

The knives are always out for them with this franchise after 2016.

God, you are as bad as Snyder stans. Rather than come up with some stupid conspiracy that people are upset over a different movie, maybe try to understand where the critics are coming from. It is okay to admit that a movie you like has problems. Maybe dues ex memberberries doesn't exactly hit a tone with critics.

I am comfortable saying that there is not a whole lot of overlap between those that reviewed 2 and 2016 30 years later.

Frankly, based on one review I read, the movie mishandles the main aspect of Afterlife I liked. But, we will see.

There isn't an agenda against this or any franchise with reviews. Not in any significant numbers. You may have a critic or 2 maybe here or there, but that ain't enough to cause a movie to have a bad RT %. Yall are allowed to like what ya like, and that applies to a critic as well. They are under no obligation to enjoy the movie. Likewise, a bad RT doesn't mean you have to hate it

Wow, that was uncalled for. I didn’t write anything to warrant being called a “Snyder stan”. Rude.

“Understand where the critics are coming from”?

Just skimming the reviews the major complaint seems to be the same they had out for Afterlife, “too much nostalgia!”

And while I can definitely see that becoming a problem, the way they’re knocking it seems more spiteful than actual criticism. And while there are problems with Afterlife to be sure - and I’m sure there will be for this one - a lot of the criticism went after the heart of the film, “how dare they try and give this heft”.

You know, the critics can get it wrong too? We all carry our own personal bias.

There is no "get it wrong" in terms of opinion. There is, having a different opinion. I say this as someone who very, very much agrees with the opinion with the critics on Afterlife.

I love Venom. The rotten tomatoes score is absolutely valid. Hell, I love Ghost Rider 2 more than the vast majority of MCU output. I don't see anything wrong with that score either.

Anyway, if I read the one review I read correctly, I am going to laugh when the culture warriors turn on this.

There is no right or wrong on an opinion. There is agreement or disagreement, which is entirely up to you to determine for yourself. But critics don't "get it wrong." They're allowed to have their opinions. Same as you or I

Personally, I'm not mad or upset about reviews. In fact, I'm not really reading any and I'm going into this as blind as possible. I just want to go see it, make up my own mind, and not have some annoying cultural discourse already playing in my head by the time I sit down in the theater. Just looking to hopefully enjoy some Ghostbusting and be entertained. It's not that complicated for me.

But critics change. So, yes, critics can get it wrong. Time is the only barometer really. There’s many examples of films we deem classic now getting trashed in their day (Blade Runner, Vertigo, The Thing 1982 etc.) if we held their RT score of the critics of their respective year, I think it’s safe to say we probably wouldn’t agree with the score. Hell, some critics even changed their opinion decades later (Ebert with Blade Runner).

What the critics at the time brought into those films were their own biases either regarding the filmmaker or their love of the original material or any number of things. So time divorced of all that is the only measure.

Sometimes it goes the other way as well where something praised doesn’t hold up either.

And yes, sometimes it is what it is, and we can just enjoy “bad” movies with bad scores. 100%

Obviously it’s too soon with Afterlife - and I don’t feel comfortable calling it a classic like the films I listed cause… it’s probably not. I admit that. But I also think in a decade or so it’ll come back around and looked on more fondly in that regard.

"Professional criticism" doesn't make a dent into my enjoyment of any given movie. But, sadly, the RT score is a big measurement in the general public and can damage the success of a movie. And if it's a movie I'm anticipating... well, I'm human. I want it to do good business.

Not sure why everyone is getting worked up about the review score. It’s not like any of these films, outside of the first one, have been like great, or even good,

I think there are absolutely times critics miss the mark, particularly when they just don't get a movie that goes onto become a classic or has a life/relevancy beyond its initial release.

I'm also not going to pretend that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is likely to be that sort of movie haha, but I do think it's totally possible that it's something that will please longtime fans of the franchise more than it does critics. But hey, I could end up not liking it too. Just trying to be optimistic.

You mean individually as in the exact same critic? No idea, but the critical reviews that make up the metric for GII aren't all from 1989.

I dont even think critics "miss the mark" with movies that got bad reviews and then got re-evaluated. Opinions are not like facts. They change. Sometimes that can be because your personal taste changes or society around you changes, so a work you previously saw no value on now has more meaning, etc. That's just called changing your opinion. My 3 year old used to hate hot dogs and wouldn't touch them. Now she will eat 2 or 3 at a time if I let her. Things change

The critics do what they do and that's fine. Though I do personally feel like they are all over the place with reviews, especially in the comicbook/hero genre. But that's just my opinion. I'm still going to see this in theaters. Call me crazy, but I won't be surprised if this will be another mid to lower critic scored film with a largely positive audience score. We've seen quite a few of these recently.

I got my ticket for Friday after work. Haven't been to cinemas since M:I. For me it's gonna be a great night no matter what, just happy enough to see a new GB film in cinemas with most of the original crew.

This feels like a movie where you kinda know whether or not you're going to like it going in regardless of other people's opinions. What the movie is and its intentions are entirely obvious from the start. You'll either vibe with it or you won't.
