A mother whose daughter was killed because she was dressed as a Goth made a plea yesterday for teenagers to show more compassion to each other after a 15-year-old boy was found guilty of stamping Sophie Lancaster to death, writes Russell Jenkins.

Miss Lancaster, 20, a distinctive figure in multi-coloured dreadlocks, facial piercings and dark clothes, was set upon as she begged a gang of drunken youths to stop beating her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, 21, in a savage and unprovoked attack.

The five-strong gang acted “like a pack of wild animals” as they first kicked and stamped Mr Maltby, an arts student, also dressed as a Goth, late on a Friday night last August in a skate park in Bacup, Lancashire. As Miss Lancaster was kneeling down cradling her boyfriend’s head several of the gang turned on her.

Brendan Harris, 15, of Bacup, was found guilty of her murder at the end of a two-week trial at Preston Crown Court. A second youth, Ryan Herbert, 16, has already pleaded guilty to the charge. Three other teenagers have admitted causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Maltby.

After the trial the murdered woman’s mother, Sylvia Lancaster, 52, a social worker who helps troubled young people, said that she had set up a charity in her daughter’s name to raise money for workshops and youth clubs.

She said: “If we are to make any sense of Sophie’s death perhaps we should see it as an opportunity to examine how all of us, particularly younger people, can become blinkered. I believe today, more than ever, we need to show respect, compassion and tolerance for those whose appearance and culture differs from our own.”

Miss Lancaster was sharing a flat in Bacup with Mr Maltby when they walked into Stubbylee Park on their way home from a night out at a friend’s house and struck up a conversation with the youths that ended with their being attacked. Miss Lancaster remained in a coma in Hope Hospital, Salford, for almost two weeks. She died on the day that Mr Maltby was allowed to go home. He still has no memory of the attack.

Harris, who threw the first punch at Mr Maltby, admitted that he had drunk two litres of cider, a bottle of Stella Artois lager and swigged from a bottle of pear schnapps.

Michael Shorrock, QC, for the prosecution, had told the jury: “These five teenagers, acting like a pack of wild animals, savagely and mercilessly attacked and beat unconscious, first Robert Maltby and then, as she tried to rescue and help him, his girlfriend.

“This defendant, together with another young man, attacked her and beat her into unconsciousness. It would appear that Mr Maltby and Miss Lancaster were singled out not for anything they had said or done but because they dressed differently.”

Detectives were highly critical of the boys’ parents, who appeared to have no control over them and allowed them to be drunk outside the house so late at night. They were also dismayed when Herbert’s mother was seen laughing and joking with her son while he was in custody.

Detective Superintendent Mick Gradwell said: “There was almost a total lack of parental responsibility. I am very critical of some of the parents involved. I really do not think they have taken completely seriously how repulsive this incident was.”

Only someone with sick and twisted logic can say that a person somehow brought it on themselves just because of the way they dress.

Disgusting.

They're lucky I'm not a crocodile, cause I'd death roll those mofos. :liz:

Hate and intolerance knows no bounds.

I honestly can't take this thread seriously sense Kaine created it out malice.

this is a pretty sad and petty attempt Kaine.

Why couldn't it be an emo?:csad:

You're pathetic. I didn't create this out of malice.

This is a very recent event in the UK that's been on my mind, and the discussion in the other thread sparked that again. I thought I should post it to show that some people are bastards and they kill people and there's no reason for it, the victims aren't to blame.

Are you afraid that your hateful arguments in the previous thread will just look silly used for this case?

The Irish in me wants to make a really distasteful joke - got to leave - can't hold it in - -

hahahaha i would like you to go use those "hateful" arguments, go ahead and find them, kaine.

Ok GAH...

GAH's response
i agree, I'm begining to think that there should be a proper dress code regardless of orientation.

I'm just amazed that somebody would think that's the logical response to take to a KID BEING SHOT IN SCHOOL! Holy ****. And then, repeatidly putting blame at the kid who was shot...

expressing yourself goes to far. in this situation, its fine if you're gay, but you're an eigth grader, dressing like a chick.....thats just freakin ******ed man, and if i was the principle at the school i would've sent his ass back home and change into appropriate clothing.

I don't think I'm in the wrong for thinking it's ******ed for an eigth grader to be dressed that way regardless of sexual orientation...it's just ****ing ******ed. Do that **** in your own home or anywhere else. When your in school and dressing that way you're creating a uncomfortable environment for others around you.. it's pretty disruptive imo.

That's some pretty astonishingly ignorant ****, GAH.

No kidding, I'm looking at the story about a kid getting killed because he was gay, and a few scrolls later I see this :csad:

None of that is hateful and i honestly don't see it as ignorant either but thats your opinion. If i think someone is not properly dressed, I'll send them back home to change into something that doesn't garner the wrong type of attention.

thats just me and I'm sticking to it.

There shouldnt be any wrong attention. People should just leave other people alone espeically when it comes to something as trivial as clothing

You think he's partly to blame, which is just nuts, GAH. It's truely sickening.

I hope these kids get their heads stomped into the floor at the county jail. :down

They didn't have any right to kill her but she was kind of asking for it dressing that way. Why couldn't she just dress normally? This is why we need dress codes in schools.

As has already been established in the other thread - Dress codes will not prevent bullying from taking place.

I'll forgive you for not noticing my parody... This time.

I must say Odiin, I did miss that. I wouldn't think you would say something like that seriously, but I was a little confused.

Being goth doesn't have anything really to do with it. It once again comes down to idiot, irresponsible parents who have idiot, irresponsible kids. I swear, I don't really like the movie Idiocracy, but the first 10 minutes is ****Ing horrifying in its accuracy.
