Action-Adventure Gladiator Sequel | Paramount

Some people have said that there's obviously a lot of missing stuff and that some elements feel stilted because of it. I'm not ready to go through that again with Ridley.

Might be seeing the movie tomorrow, I'm somewhat excited. At least it'll be a spectacle.

Has Ridley bemoaned not being able to make the movie five hours long? Because he usually does that.

Someone said this is the Sicario: Day of the Soldado to Sicario.
I haven't seen Sicario 2 so....

Day of the Soldado is a more genre-friendly dumb version of the "prestigious" original we thought we would get.

It's kinda like how Rambo II & III is the dumb version of First Blood.
This is very unfair to Rambo II. While dumber then the original, stands on it's own two feet, especially with it's insane subtext.

It's currently at 74%.

I saw this yesterday and thought it was great! The biggest negatives I could say about it are in comparison to the first one. It's hard with a sequel not to repeat certain things and you get moments of "been there done that", but it's almost impossible to avoid. Without getting too into spoilers I would say some positives and negatives for me were:

+Great action set pieces that looked fantastic in IMAX. The opening siege battle felt a bit like Helms Deep or Minas Tirith in a good way. Colosseum scenes were mostly great.
+The acting. Paul Mescal isn't quite Russell Crowe in his peak, but he still did really well. Denzel shines as a very colorful character in this. Pascal is good as always and the Emperor twins are creepy.
+It feels epic. Ridley Scott still knows how to put together movies and this feels like an event film you should see in the cinema.
+The script did a great job of raising stakes. When you thought you had a character figured out, something would happen to change the playing field.

-The emotional 'core' did not hit as strong as in the first film. By that I mean the tragic event in the opening that sets Paul Mescal on his path to revenge. It didn't hit as hard as what happens to Maximus.
-A few moments in the colosseum particularly involving animals did feel a little bit too CGI for my taste but overall not a huge problem.
-While it stands pretty well on its own legs, there are a few times they bring back flashbacks to the first film and as much as I enjoyed this film, the first one was just impossible to top.

Overall I would give this a solid 8/10 or so. Definitely a movie you should try and see in IMAX if you can!
