God Bless America... Why?

Who said "only"????
The term itself exculdes everyone else because no one else in mentioned in it.
Have you read that some where? Would you rather He curse us? Would you feel better??

Good greif....why is this even an issue?? sigh.....

And one more thing......you ought to want him to bless this country. Why? Because we are the ones helping everybody else. We're the ones protecting everyone else. We are place where most people migrate to (legally or illegally) so that they can have something!!

We ain't perfect. But what's your beef??? Do you live here??
Besides, if you read my post, I never said anything about him not blessing our country, I was asking why people don't wish God's blessing on the entire world. Another thing, is we're helping and protecing everyone else, what have we done for the folks in Dafur lately? What have we done for our own homeless vets? We do not help and protect everyone.

Yes, do it. Do not show your support to the millions of Americans that have lost their lives defending a flag that represents freedom to its people. People who have no patriotism IMO do not deserve the chance to live in such a country. What the hell country, that is succesful, can you name where its people have no patriotism? Can you name one? No:o

I now know Reverend Wright posts here.:wow:
Why do so many people say he hates America? I've heard the sound bite of him saying, "God damn, America," but it its context, I can see his point. Is this really the only leg the arguement against him has? If there is more, please share.

He claims that white supremacists run America and that they are keeping down African Americans and so he pretty much wants the government overthrown/anarchy. He believes we deserved 9-11 from what the white officials are doing along with AIDS being manufactured in a lab to keep down the blacks in Africa. He said "God damn America," in the context that he wants God to damn the white individuals that are committing those attrocities. To me, he is another loon with power.

Dude! Are you kidding??? So if I ask the Good Lord to bless my family (and I don't mention anybody else) I'm automatically asking God not to bless you??

Are you that far gone?????? Really. Pleeeeez tell me you are kidding!
:pal:

You don't have to say it. Your words reek of contempt for this country. If He blesses us, what's your beef?? You mad at God for doing what He may or may not want?

And how do you know if Americans are not praying for other countries?? Our church and many others do it all the time! Even people who don't go to church, pray for other countries. Get over yourself. That's pretty arrogant and presumptuous of you. We even do more than just pray. Wesend food and medicines to poor countries,as well.

Personally, we've turned so far away from God on moral issues, I'm surprised we're still here, sometimes. So, I'm thankful for the grace He does show in spite of us.

All I know is that I hate the song, simply for the reason that my Sign Language teacher repeatedly made us "sing" it in Sign all during my first semester with her.

I know that ***** like the back of my hand:cmad:.

Pardon the pun.

I didn't see anyone showing "contempt" for the country. I just saw someone that was questioning the jingoistic patriotism that some shovel forth

I was watching George Carlin's latest special, and he made this same point. God bless America? Why? What does the phrase mean? Is it a request, a demand? And why is it only America? Why not Darfur? It's people are being slaughtered. Why not Mexico? It's people risk persecution in this country just to find a job? Why not China and Tibet? My point is, what really makes America so special that we are the only one's deserving of God's blessing? It seems to me, that if we are going to request a blessing from God, maybe we should show a little humility, and not put our own country, the wealthiest nation on Earth, ahead of those less fortunate.

People obviously forget what it means. I think it goes from the time when the country was first founded. People were so optimistic, that they used the phrase "God Bless America" like "We wish you the best in the future". Like a good hope that things will always be right.

There's nothing exclusive about the phrase 'God Bless America.' God's power and blessings are infinite. It's simple just a country asking for the blessing of the Lord. I believe He certainly has been very generous with his blessings to a peoples who seem to become more and more undeserving (I include myself in this group)

because we can put silly pics on line

I agree in principle with what you're saying, but I don't agree down to every detail.

America is *not*, nor was it ever intended to be, a 'democracy'. It's a representative republic.

The problem as I see it is not that we have enemies of 'democracy' in positions of power - it's that we have enemies of 'the republic, for which it stands' in positions of power.

And this country will continue to spiral downward until someone comes along and makes bold changes to this entire line of 'democracy' garbage being taught to our children in our government schools, and espoused by political leaders to the masses.

You are right. With representatives America is not a true democracy but as you said I was speaking in principle.

It's not the country or the basic ideals I have contempt for, it's the people who wave a flag and preach blind patriotism. And your comment, if you ask God to bless your family, you are doing just that. You have not asked God to bless anyone else. And you are the only one getting emotional about this. I simply asked why people don't say, something like , "God bless us, every one." This just seems to me to be the more Christian thing to do. As for your chuch,. But that is not American forigen policy, which is what I was addressing.

Well, I can see how people would think he hates the country, and not just the people running it. I can fully understand someone position if they feel our past forigen policy had something to do with why we were attacked on 9/11. I'm not saying we deserved it, just that we are probably not as innocent as some would like to beleive. And no I'm not refering to the people who died that day, I'm refering to the country as a whole. But I do think he may have a screw loose. Anyone who gets to the extreme levels seen there is a little nuts, to say the least.

Amen. I second that.

You're the one all riled up because he doesn't buy into the jingoism. So who is really emotional here

There's nothin "jingo" in it! :woot: You guys like to find opportunities to use cute little words like that!

It's prayer! Get over yourself.

I think it's worth pointing out that Irving Berlin wrote the song "God Bless America" in 1918, when America was still emerging as a world power, and still far off from being a superpower.
