oh god no! This movie was completely disappointing. I wanted to love it but I absolutely hated it. the first hour and a half could be left out and I would have had a better time.

lol, here's my review if anyone is interested. I'd like to know what people thought.

Pretty much in full agreement with you on the review. I'm a lifelong Godzilla fan, and this movie disappointed me at every turn.

I'm sorry but a 67% drop on a Holiday weekend means that your film has some series bad word of mouth going on. Not only that, if you add in the Monday Holiday number it still dropped 59%, that is not good at all. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade and I haven't seen the film so I'm not calling it good or bad but the numbers are the numbers, I'm not going to sugarcoat it. The holiday weekend was down from last year and Blended tanked, there was money left on the table, a lot of people just didn't want to give that money to Godzilla.

A lot of people hate it but I will always tell it like it is when it comes to the box office. I don't care who likes it.

In spite of all these criticisms, and the other criticisms I mostly agree with, this was Gareth Edwards first movie with a budget greater than $100,000 or so, so I'm still impressed and still think he might have a decent future.

My second thought after seeing this film was "I bet they shot this in Canada" because I kept seeing the same actors I see in shows I know are/were shot there.

That was Gary Chalk as the nuclear power plant director right? Pretty sure he's based in Canada.

That asian guy in the movie.

Hiro Kanagawa

He has been in Elektra, Almost Human, The Tomorrow People, Arrow, Continuum, The Secret Circle, Caprica, Fringe, Andromeda, Smallville, etc.

Pretty sure he's also done Sanctuary and one episode of Human Target.

ATJ made steve sanders look like jack nicholson in sharknado...

Watched it for the second time this morning, and specifically looked out for the prominent complaints. Felt like the pacing and "laggy" middle third is the biggest part, also noticed what people mention about Ken Watanabe's performance being lackluster and his facial expressions, but in all honesty, if I were a scientist and I were thrown into the situation I'd probably do the same thing.

Still not too convinced by the "ATJ is wooden", not his best performance by far but I'd say compared to the majority of the "military guy archetype" he actually did really well with the material he was provided, especially his scenes with Cranston. If they cast Josh Duhamel or Channing Tatum I think people would hammer them over what that would have done to the overall movie. I think ATJ did ok for the most part with what he was given, they maybe just could have edited it better so he wasn't as prominent.

The thing is, of all the people in the movie, he was the most prepared for what was happening. He fully knew about Godzilla and believed he was the balance to it all... but still he stood around slack jawed.

Yeah, because 500 foot tall lizards just fight giant mutated creatures everyday & he should've stood there like "yep, just another day at the office."

I saw this yesterday, assuming it was going to be epic based on the trailers. I was very disappointed.

I loved the fights between Godzilla and the MUTOs as well as the action parts on the train track etc. However, take all that away and you have a painfully generic script, terrible acting of said script (poor Cranston and Binoche, they deserved better) and a very cringe-worthy ending.

Overall, I found the script to be the huge problem. I'm not sure why, but the attempts to be serious just became funny. Also, Watanabe needs to stay away from cinema for a long time. When he revealed the name 'Godzilla', it was done so hammily that people in my cinema openly laughed.

Fair point, he was the only person besides Cranston that had anything on his radar. The real thing as opposed to just speculation and theory would probably be quite different, but I do think they could have varied Watanabe's dialogue a bit more than just cryptic exposition or history lessons, he should have played a more pivotal role.

Yeah, for sure, I feel like Watanabe was good with what they provided him.

Indeed, I don't see why he would just shrug it off as nothing.

Regardless of how big of a Godzilla fan any of us are, I highly doubt if he came up out the Bay that anybody would just be like "awww dude, cool!"

It's okay to dislike the movie, but at least have valid complaints. And that right there ain't even close to being one of them.

I think films like this are divisive because the tone can be hit or miss with people, it came across as accurately serious to me but some folks found it hammy or overdone. Guess it's just preferences and different people being used to or expecting different things.

I agree somewhat Re: ATJ's stoic performance and if you wanted WAY more of the big G (a reasonable expectation for a summer tent pole like this) I can understand the frustration. But I admired the stones Edwards had in taking the approach he did and felt he did as best as could be expected with the human element in the film. I'll take this over trying to get too cutesy with the human characters as they did in '98.

I toiofelt that in terms of shots and production design that this was a hell of an assured film for a director's second outing given the huge budget and expectations attached. Since he says this is the start of a G-zilla trilogy I am looking forward to seeing what comes next. Was it perfect? No. Was it a damned good Godzilla film? Yeah. I'd say it was.

Definitely agree here, I thought the cinematography and shot choice was very good, and Edwards deserves a lot of praise.

Although I wouldn't have minded some more of Godzilla, I feel like the shots he was in were all different and conveyed very different feelings. The ocean scenes, HALO jump and MUTO fights all showed Godzilla from different angles and seemed really well done. Edwards definitely knows how to pull off intriguing shots. The scene showing Godzilla full screen with the lanterns in the city was really great.

My favorite. Literally gave me chills when he let out that roar.

I still cant believe they Pacific Rim almost 50 million dollars more of budget. I know is GDT , but still its freaking Godzilla, WB should have had a little more faith in it. I think they realized too late that they bet on the wrong horse, the response to see Godzilla was huge, more than anyone expected. Would we have seen more Godzilla scenes with that higher budget? who knows, but seeing how much detail the creatures had, im sure it was very costly to have them on screen.

The only really bad decision i think was in the Human side, i would have killed off Johnson and kept Cranston even crazier through the whole thing. I think that was the major bad decision and would have improved the movie tremendously , but overall i loved the movie, and hopefully the studio learned its lesson, people really love Godzilla and want to see more of it
