Guys, the Muto couldn't emit something that acted as an EMP because that guy who doesn't exist in the fiction of this film said so, there's no way, and we should question it. Hopefully one of the fictional characters will study said MUTOs and find out how they emit EMPs.

What ever happened to just enjoying a solid sci-fi film without over analyzing its scientific merits?

People developed their critical thinking skills and began demanding a greater attention to detail? At least that is what I infer from the proliferation and popularity of Youtube channels such as Cinema Sins, Jeremy Jahns, How It Should Have Ended and Honest Trailers. It seems that a growning number of people no longer passively observe a film and accept whatever is put before them. Now, people scrutinize and ask questions. There is nothing wrong with simply shutting off that nagging voice in one's mind that demands full cognition while watching a film. Likewise, there is nothing wrong with engaging with a film on an additional level and asking questions of the narrative.

Apparently so. Btw figs, what did you score this movie?

I think I gave it a 3.5/5

I agree with some of the criticisms like how Cranston
should have lived
and the majority of characters weren't written well but I still thought the movie was really fun. I didn't mind the two cutaways either because the final fight wouldn't have been all that special if we had two full fights before it. I wouldn't want to be burned out by "more of the same" like I was with the action in the Transformers sequels.

careful!! there be Spoilers in them thar post!! :cwink:

I thought the EMP attack was a shockwave. The Mutos used radiation to create a pulse that was so powerful that it could break it's cacoon and be used as an attack. If the pulse was that powerful than it could be an EMP but that's more like a side effect than the actual attack.

Scrutinizing and asking questions is all well and good, but personally when it comes to the genre of science-fiction, I don't care enough to discuss those things.

as for the fight teases, ultimately they didn't ruin my enjoyment of the film because the final fight was so satisfying.

however, if I had a choice, I certainly would have preferred they showed us more of the earlier fights.

they could have added another 10-15 minutes to the runtime, extended those earlier fight scenes a bit ( instead of abruptly cutting away from them ), and I think that would have left more people feeling satisfied.

cuz, in the end, it really felt like we only got to see one round of the fight.

if it was a shockwave, wouldn't it have had more of a "concussive" effect?

like, the attack would have knocked people and property back and done damage just from the concussive force.......

I can't remember if it did........

Was anyone else bothered by the constant showing of the news? I understand they wanted to show some scenes from citizens point of view(what they were seeing on the news), but after awhile it kind of got annoying. Just a nit pick of mine.

oh, and was I the only one thinking, throughout the entire movie, that Olsen was freakin hot???!!!!

Yeah, I mostly agree with you here, though I scored it a tad higher (4/5) because the last third of the movie was so damn good.

to me, that gave it more of a "realworld" feel, because if such events and creatures happened in the real world, we would be seeing news footage of them ( of course, we'd all be totally doomed and screwed.........)

My score could match yours in the future. I want to see it a second time though.

Figs I love your avvy. Especially the...uh...gun holster part. ;)

:woot:

When I saw that in the trailer...

I didn't mind it in some parts. The one scene where Ford's son is watching the TV and he tells his mother....."look mom dinosaur". I liked it for that situation cause the kid had no idea what was going on, but Ford's wife new it was a bad situation.

I enjoyed the movie, i mean were talking about a 350 foot tall lizard who breathes atomic rays and fights flying bugs, This is isnt shakespearre.

See that'd be a fine excuse if the film didn't try to posit itself as a drama and instead actually focused on the 350 foot lizard, but that's not the case. Instead it just kind of waffles on the things it tries to do.

If they cut a half an hour of the human story out of this and gave us Godzilla fighting the winged MUTO at the airport and a scene of Godzilla doing some rampaging through a city I would have loved this...sigh....so damn disappointed. I never walked out of a theater that disappointed.

Edit:
Also that news piece at the end "Godzilla, savior of the city?".....Really? Are they really going to set up Godzilla as some kind of superhero? Made me cringe at how cheesy that was. Even the films where Godzilla is a "hero" he rampages through cities and kills lots of people.

I chuckled to myself when I saw that, I just got the imagine of J. Jonah Jameson being the only one against Godzilla while everyone else loves him. I assumed that it must of been some callback/cameo/reference to a prior Godzilla movie where that line must of been uttered. Still felt pretty out of place given how "real" everything had been presented up to that point.

Scrutinizing and asking questions is all well and good, but personally when it comes to the genre of science-fiction, I don't care enough to discuss those things.

It isn't really a genre criticism. I don't question light speed travel in Star Trek even though I know that matter heavier than a photon can not move as quickly as light (restrictions based on mass and the Higgs field). I accept that science adances enought to work out a theory to circumvent these obstacles and allow for light speed travel.

The only issue is if writing doesn't make sense within the context of the world established by the narrative, not whether or not something would make sense in the real world. Though, modern science often considers the latter.

But I can understand why you would watch science fiction wothout questioning it. Bruce Willis has a funny line in Loopers (clealry the writer talking to the audience) which encourages the audience to not spend too much time consodering time travel paradoxes, lest everything becomes nonsensical. I found it funny and honest.

You know who really hates Godzilla...
the families of the hundreds or thousands dead from the Godzilla induced Tsunami

You mean all those people they didn't show dead? Yeah Im sure those figments of your imagination are upset with that.

Godzilla didn't do one...hate to use the word evil....purposely destructive thing in the movie which is just idiotic seeing as he rampages through towns in every movie.

Why is it idiotic?

In a way I see it as an extension of the nuclear metaphor. Godzilla kills a lot of people, but he ultimately saves more lives in the process.

To be fair to Godzilla however, he is not even trying to kill people. It's just collateral damage, and he even goes out his way to minimize it.
