Piccolo's sword is used in the Fulum deleted scene ( I believe) so he cuts the monster in half so another grows so more monsters were made (as the novel says). In the novel, the pole is used by Roshi to save Goku from the lava.

Right. IN THE JUNIOR NOVEL. Not in the actual movie. Plus what is the point of giving him a huge sword and he only uses it to cut his henchmen in half? Thats so stupid.

That's what you get with an extremely quick pre-production and production period. It's like they only filmed half of a movie, and then spend 2x as long in post production trying to scrape together something out of what little they had to work with.
