Golden Globe Nominations

There are some elements from 'Dark Victory' in there....what I didn't like (and it's a nitpick) is that in the books Harvey already had a wife prior to becoming Two Face....

It also has many elements from The Killing Joke like trying to push a good man to insanity or the continuous lying about the Joker's origin (in this case just his scars). Like I said, inspired. Not adapted.

I saw the film two times in theaters and love it but I still believe what I said.

It is nice to have another person who agrees with me. I'm going to watch the film again on my borrowed DVD tonight or tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong, Heath Ledger's performance was great and it is at least worthy of a nomination. But to say that "The Dark Knight" would have been equally successful or buzzed had Ledger lived is a gross misstatement. We saw what happened on the boards after Ledger's death. Almost everyone who was skeptical of this film suddenly became infatuated with Heath's Joker. They started writing things like "Heath is this generation's James Dean" in their signatures, they started putting pictures of him at their avatars... there's no doubt in my mind that the mega-hype surrounding his death gave this film the legs it had in theaters.

The Dark Knight is a great movie, probably one of the best superhero movies ever made and definitely one of the best films of the year. But I doubt it would have grossed more than $350 million (and even that's a stretch) had Ledger survived and/ or the Joker role didn't receive so much attention as a result of his death.

Alot of people tend to think that, and they also tend to forget that the first full trailer was released only a few weeks prior to his death. That is what caused the infatuation. His death might have added to it and brought in people who werent initially interested in TDK, but by the time he died, plenty of people were already on the edge of their seat waiting to see Heath's Joker.

IMO Eckhardt did more as an actor....going from the upright Harvey Dent to a coin flipping bisected psychopath....he should be recognized for that....

Absolutely. Like I said before, Eckhart was the unsung hero of The Dark Knight....

People talk about Ledger because he was the breakout character
People talk about Bale because he was the lead
No one really talks about Eckhart :csad:

After seeing the 'Supporting Actor' category, if Ledger doesn't win...something is badly wrong.

Eckhart was nothing short of amazing! There's no denying that.

I don't believe there's any rule that states that "if you adapt from more than one source it suddenly becomes original". Someone want to point me to that rule?

Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source, but here's what it states

"The Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay is one of the Academy Awards, the most prominent film awards in the United States. It is awarded each year to the writer of a screenplay adapted from another source (usually a novel, play, or short story but also sometimes another film). All sequels are automatically considered adaptations by this standard (since the sequel must be based on the original story)."

So, TDK is based on another source(s) and is a sequel. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

All I have to say about the Golden Globes is this:

No.

Maybe the Oscars will get it right.

I'm curious to see who will win the 'Best Actor'.

Meh.

Philip Seymour Hoffman is nothing short of amazing in just about every film he's in, so I think he has some serious competition there.

Robert Downey Jr. has had an amazing comeback and has had a very fulfilling career-- much more so than Ledger's-- so I can see him winning as well.

The only thing which would be "badly wrong" is if Tom Cruise ends up winning.

I found him incredibly annoying in Twister.

Even in his earlier films where he played the "fat misanthropic sidekick," like "Twister" and "Patch Adams," he managed to perform them with precision.

Because there's sooo much precision to be had! :cwink:

Cruise's extended cameo in Tropic Thunder was definitely funny - albeit dragged out. But "Best Supporting Actor?" :whatever:

Further proof that the Globes are all about kissing up to celebrities with their choice of nominations.

Kissing up? Tom Cruise has been a target of the media for years now.

I like Cruise's role in 'Tropic Thunder'....it was short, but it made an impact.....the dancing probably clinched the nomination....

Alright im not like a fanboy of TDK but no Best Pic nod and its the biggest grosser of the year? Titanic for all its accolades is not that great yet it got its BP nod and Win.

Titanic also had a lot of stuff swirling around it....it was Camerons baby, it was way over budget, behind schedule, and everyone thought it was going to suck the high hard one....

I'm a little surprised by that as well.
