Most DJ's have standards that they bring because they know SOMEONE will ask for those songs... However, a good way to avoid this is to provide the DJ with a list of songs you would like to hear and songs that they MUST not play. When Hubby and I got married I had one song on my ABSOLUTELY MUST NOT PLAY list... "Achy Breaky Heart".

I made CD's of the music my wife and I wanted to hear during our reception so I didn't have to listen to some a-hole DJ try and be funny on a microphone. People could dance or mingle as they wished. Worked out very well.

I second Love Shack.

The Ramones are suprisingly good at getting people on the dance floor. "I Wanna Be Sedated" always works, but I'm not sure whether that's "wedding appropriate" or not.

Also, Bohemian Rhapsody. Not exactly a dance song, but it gets everyone going. Any reception/party/etc. they've played that at that I've been at, almost everyone gets really into singing along with it.
