Whether they are fighting to enslave the human race, battling to defend it against invading aliens or just sacrificing themselves to save all of humanity there is no doubt that Robots and Mechs have become a big part of cinema over the years but which representation of it is the most iconic?

This is also a pretty wide field so I will be excluding human robot hybrid's like Robocop & Cyborg for a different list. Unless its straight machine or its got a human piloting it its not on this list.

Well its time to find out once and for all as we decide what is the greatest Robot/Mech in cinema history.

Here are some of the contenders

The Terminator

The Hulkbuster

Gypsy Danger

Optimus Prime

The Iron Giant

Ultron

Will include the others in the poll, please cast you vote on what you thought was the best representation of a Robot/Mech in cinema and if I don't have it on the poll post the name and I will add it.

I don’t think I’ve ever been first to vote, ever!
Anyhow, I voted for Sonny from I, Robot as I felt it was one of the best Sci-Fi interpretations of a proper robot from the list...

The T-800 (The Terminator)

Other honorable mentions:

Ash (Alien)
Ava (Ex Machina)
Bishop (Aliens)
C-3PO (Star Wars)
HAL (2001: A Space Odyssey)
K (Blade Runner 2049)
R2-D2 (Star Wars)
Rick Deckard (Blade Runner 2049)
RoboCop (RoboCop)
Roy Batty (Blade Runner)
T-1000 (T2: Judgment Day)

The Iron Giant will always be my favorite. Ultron was cool looking, but too funny for my tastes. And I've never heard of Gypsy Danger; what movie is that from? It looks so cool.

^ Gyspy Danger is from Pacific Rim.

I'm partial to Optimus Prime, as long as he's voiced by Peter Cullen. As far as the other Transformers go, I'm looking forward to seeing Starscream in the upcoming Bumblebee movie:

The original Arnold Terminator is the definitive movie robot/cyborg to me.

Yeah he looks sick

It's OG Soundwave im looking forward to seeing most

Sondwave is the coolest Transformer (he's that franchises' answer to Boba Fett) and seeing him done so faithfully makes me excited for BB.

I swear I'm not trying to sound like a movie snob, but it's HAL 9000. How can you not love HAL 9000? I also have a soft spot for the Terminator, but only the one from the first movie.

Hate to be bearer of bad news but that's not Starscream, it's a Transformer named Blitzwing that for some reason just happen to look a lot like Starscream.

How so? Is it because he doesn't have a body? I would argue that he does. The entire spaceship is his body.

I would say so because he doesn't have an "anthropomorphic" body or even limb, The Discovery could be considered just as a big moving computer hosting HAL.
If HAL was hosted in a body like the Utron AI, he could considered as such.

Cool thread.

The T-800 is a close second but I've gotta go with the Galaxy's greatest Astromech!

"Technically" HAL 9000 isn't a mecha, a robot or a cyborg.

Nor are the Replicants from Blade Runner which have been mentioned. They are artificial humans. The same applies to the hosts in HBO's Westworld (But not the movie).

Exactly. Like Bishop from Aliens
It was a post meant to @Abudefduf who raised the HAL 9000 question.
As a huge fan of HAL myself I wanted to answer his question :)

Bicentennial Man was a favourite of my mine when I was younger.

Terminator and R2.
