Would You Have Sex With A Robot?

None of us have learned anything from Batman Beyond.

Only if it looked like Summer Glau.

Maybe....if it were either Hayley Atwell or Eva Green...or both? :p

I think these would probably be a safer option than prostitutes, if that's all you want them for. But if you're wanting more companionship and something more akin to a relationship, I don't know if robots could really approximate human behaviour to that extent. I think there are too many variables and it would be too complex.

And if they are able to achieve that level of sentience, then wouldn't they begin to question their whole existence simply to serve as living sex dolls with no free will?

Depends on whether they become self aware. If not then it's not an issue.

What is my true purpose in life?

Which reminds me of the movie "Her".

A true artificial intelligence would overwhelm a human, get bored and then break their heart to pursue goals beyond our comprehension.

Wasn't there that original series Star Trek episode "Requiem for Methuselah" that had a female android who was invented by an immortal named Flint who had lived many identities such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Brahms, Solomon, Merlin etc? He had invented a mate for himself named Rayna, but she was missing a vital ingredient: to be able to love him back properly.

However, Kirk formed a relationship with her, not knowing that she was an android, and taught her how to love. But when she learnt those feelings, she was attracted to Kirk and not to Flint. However, she dies in the end because she is torn between her romantic feelings for Kirk and her loyalty to Flint, which causes her to overload.

The thing about a robot who would satisfy all your sexual and emotional needs is that they would have to be programmed in such a way as to be subservient to your will and to do your bidding. But they would always be missing something until they become more human. But once they do achieve that humanity, it's likely they'll either turn on you or would fall for someone else, and might be appalled that they were used as sex slaves. So it's always a catch 22 situation.

Nope, everything I learned is from Bugs Bunny...

I feel that these kind of robots wouldn´t be as efective as sex with a person, i mean yeah you get the act done but as you said we´ll have to program them to update some kind of database to adapt to the user liking but there will never be an autentic emotional response to the user´s "moves", maybe the user will get attached to it but there will never be an emotional connection from it (unless we develop a pretty advanced A.I.), and people will get bored soon (as it happens with everything) and go back to having sex with people, i think it could be a good alternative but it will never replace social interaction, idk...

also if these kind of robots came to be, it will be hard /expensive to keep them clean...you don´t want to get another kind of infections there [BLACKOUT](it can get an antivirus...you can´t)[/BLACKOUT]:cwink:

As I previously stated:

The fleshlight is a thing that has sold millions of units. If we are talking about more sufficiently advanced tech than a flash light that you can f***, I think the average guy will have no problem not getting this connection you speak of

i know and i agree , the thing i´m saying is: i don´t think it would injure human relationships that much because it can´t replace having sex with a parthner... it will just be a way more expensive fleshlight

I would agree with this. There would be a lack of emotional connection. But if it is that advanced that there is that emotional connection, then the robot is likely to have free will and will start acting contrary to your wishes eventually because it will see that there must be more to its existence than simply to serve to act out another's fantasies without getting something of benefit in return.

Even an escort, whose job is to be a companion and to act out a person's fantasies does it for the money and sees that it has some financial advantage to them.

The thing about a fleshlight is that people realise that it is just a toy, so their feelings are divorced from it. But with a robot who looks and behaves almost like a human being, it would be close enough that you probably would start desiring the real thing, but not close enough that you would realise there's something not quite right about a robot. I think the further away it is from a human, the less you'd really care, but the closer it is, the more it would awaken a desire for authenticity in you.

It's hard to imagine sexbot technology more effective than disease resistant clones of porn stars and Hollywood sex symbols.

Ahhh I get what your saying now. I guess it all depends on what kind of guy you are. I know a lot guys that think of sex as a means to an end of a release that don't care about any type of connection. Then you have guys that love that connection to their partner and find that to be the most satisfying thing about intercourse.

That would be me.

I guess we all have an innate desire to be loved, and sometimes we seek sex as a means to finding love rather than simply as an end in itself. I guess it's possible to switch off one's emotions a few times and just see it as a release, but I think if you begin to connect even just a bit, you start wanting that connection more, and then soon it becomes the most valuable part of it. This is what I think robots could never do. They could never truly connect or love. They could approximate something that feels quite close to it, but you'd know deep down that it isn't the real thing.

I've always craved that connection as well. Even when I was a manho I still loved to please whoever I was with for the night. I have a good friend though that just uses sex as a release and couldn't care less about those he's with.

For purely sex... If they were just a non-sentient bimbo bot (or Himbo bot for the ladies and dudes that partake I suppose)? I really don't know. Maybe? Something like that could be tailored to all your own physical fetishes and... Not gonna lie, in a purely fantasy way that could be appealing.

If we are talking about a sentient life form though that is being produced to be an object just for sex? No. Count me out. If I met a female "Data" that for some reason could feel attracred to me? Yeah.

There seems to be a lot of variables to this question.

Robot ethicists Kathleen Richardson of De Montfort University and Erik Billing from University of Skövde recently went on record as saying:

“We think that the creation of such robots will contribute to detrimental relationships between men and women, adults and children, men and men and women and women,”

I'm of the mindset that if the tech is sufficiently advanced that the process is indistinguishable from the real thing then why the hell not? We all know the human population is a bit out of control so if we could placate all the stupid folks with robots so they could stop breeding indiscriminately and creating more stupid people I see that as yet another advantage. The only downside I really see is if we all had our very own sex robots that could look like anyone and do anything we desired then I'm not sure if very many other things would get accomplished in the world.

If you would like more info from the ethicists that started this whole thought experiment it can be found here:

Prognosticators are saying places like Japan may be in real trouble, which ironically would be the best place for this to take off.
