it's countered by the idea that bay has a strong working relation ship with them already. The same way he doesn't need someone to give him a discount on GM cars or Military hardware because of the working relationship in place.

To assume berg got him a discount would be nothing more than speculation.

Well I read it in a magazine, so if it's speculation it's not my speculation.

Not worldwide.

21 million opening day for this is terrible...even with 3D prices added in. 55ish opening weekend for this thing is awful and I bet WB is pissed. They are lucky they have Potter this summer to pick up the slack. This movie will be lucky to crawl to 125 domestic with Cars, then Transformers, then Potter moving in each week.

Yeah, GL's release date is actually rather awful, because it comes in the heel of two superhero movies and it will be besieged by several high-profiled movies like the ones you mentioned. Therefore, GL needs to make alot of money in short period of time and a 21 mil opening day gross imo isn't too good.

yea GL can't do the relative same as films in it's exact bracket have been doing, it has to be far better or it's pretty much a bomb.

Its doing about the same as x3 and quite frankly doesn't have the name recognition than Xmen has . 60 million is about you can expect for this film.

X3's opening day was more than twice GL's opening day :huh:

It's not a great opening day, but you can't call it a bomb unless the drops are awful (which is definitley a possibility).

Even if it only grosses 300 million WW GL will probably turn a profit.

But yeah, if the drops are big and it only grosses like 110 million it will essentially be a bomb (although the definition of "bomb" is debatable... I mean, the Sorcerer's Apprentice was a bomb)

I meant X First class . If Gl is a bomb so is First Class which had better reviews and more name recognition .

First Class had nowhere near the budget of this movie though. So you can't even compare them.

In fact Fist Class is pretty much good and made a profit now. It's not a bomb. This actually does stand a chance of bombing if it doesn't have legs which it won't because of all the movies coming out this year.

It needs way more than 300WW to make a profit.

Well, First Class is definitely bringing in disappointing numbers. And GL had a bigger budget, so it having the same results as First Class is not necessarily equivalent.

The only sh movie so far this summer that can be called a hit with certainty is Thor, and even that didn't bring in huge numbers, just respectable numbers.

and thats where the ancillary market comes into play . The film's fate really ain't at the theater
The film's sequel's fate is at the theater.

Most films are eventually profitable when everything is taken into account.

Not neccessarily.

Box office run is overrated in the success of a movie like this. Home video sales are huge these days, and the merchandising and branding is big. Launching the GL cartoon, selling toys, replica rings, t-shirts, halloween costumes, etc. is huge business.

if it was that simple then why is Tron not getting a sequel right now?

Who said anything about a sequel?

I was defending my point that it will eventually turn a profit (unless the drops are horrible).

There's a great chance we won't see a sequel to this movie. Tons of movies that eventually turn a profit never get sequels.

You need to make at least double your money spent to make a profit in film. GL ain't doing that.

after all those (expensive) ads I think the whole eastern coast of the country can recite that oath and for some reason end it with a growl.

Batman Begins had awesome legs and was critically recieved well. I don't see GL getting that same treatment. It is far more uphill a battle for a sequel to GL.

Looking at how the film turned out, they should have just pushed it back to christmas and put together a better cut. The film feels like they ran out of time and just put out what they had.

Pushing GL back may guarantee a better movie, but the high budget dictates that it must be released in the summer, where most of the blockbuster movies premiere. Hollywood studios still view summer as the best time to come out with their big-budget movies.
