Damn you Berlanti.
writters in hollywood writte what the studio and directors tell them to writte.

so everything that you think is wrong in the movie is the fault of everyone from the studio,director,.....

Of course Marvel is enjoing the negative buzz around GL and pumping out the bad reviews . I expect nothing less from the studio who fired Edward Norton

how exactly is Marvel "pumping out the bad reviews"
very curious

Last I heard (on Friday) WB is still planning on moving ahead with the sequel, they just aren't in a rush to do so.

What really surprised me is that they expected this predicament (at least over the past two weeks) and are still positive about the overall BO take from the film. Their projection must be a lot lower than anyone thinks.

I think part of it was they are trying to create a brand and a name recognition . Even if it doesn't make a profit they make give it a sequel and hope it does better and obviously they will likelt cut costs ..

Anyone expection a 100 million opening weekenf for GL is smoking something Xmen only did 56 million and thats a franchise at this point.

I can't think of a time when a movie whose box office take was an embarrassment to the studio got a sequel.

They might be "planning" it, but it happening is a different story.

that was on Friday, if the film had actually perfromed like a normal film and gone up instead of dropping on Saturday...... I could see it.

WOM on this must be downright awful for the Saturday drop...

This may not even be as successful as FF, this may be Hulk sceanario...... where a sequal is promised but never comes

everything that's wrong with this movie is the script
all things being equal (speculation aside) I'm fully ready to blame the only people that unionization laws will allow write out a said screen play.

of course this story was thought up in broad strokes by producers and johns and signed off by the Director, but it's inner workings and "pacing" issues are the writers problem.

Nevermind the budget if Gl's box office is embarrassing than Xmen First class is atrocious as well ... And even with good wom it dropped nearly 60 percent in its second weekend after underperforming its first weekend .

GL not as known as Xmen is suppose to outgross it ?

Yes. Because X-Men was coming off two hated installments and had a smaller budget. Do you think Thor is as well known as X-Men? You're just trying to make excuses for it.

How do you think GL is going to drop? Cars is taking its kid audience next weekend and then TF3 is taking the rest.

From what I heard WB wasn't planning on more than a $50 mil opener. Their original anticipation (before the last minute May 28th focus change) was $80 mil

Don't know if you guys noticed, but Fox has implemented their new approach to the comic book films (I didn't think this was going to happen until Daredevil). Get ready to see much less cross marketing and hype, more delivery of adult-oriented movies.

That's the thing that really has me scratching my head. The WB marketing team is so nonchalant about this. They obviously knew they were putting out an inferior product but thought it to be a worthy sacrifice to the franchise gods.

I think your not factoring in a couple of things, while I agree X:FC will prolly not get a sequel. It's boxoffice is still better than GL's and First Class didn't have a boost from 3d (40% of GLs tickets are from 3d)

As for how it's suppose to outgross it while being not as well known? Thor did it, fairly easily. Why couldn't GL?

And again this is if we "Nevermind" the massive cost difference between GL and First Class.

It's "Superman Returns" all over again

At least Green Lantern has other corps members

.
SATURDAY PM/SUNDAY AM, 4TH UPDATE: Warner Bros' Green Lantern ($21.6M Friday, dropping -21% for $17.1M Saturday, and only a $53M weekend

Well that's it then. I guess WB will blame bad word of mouth at Comic Con for this >_>

Look forward to alot more Batman movies in the next 10 years

Apparently the marketing dept didn't see the movie until two weeks ago. It's not like freaking out about it will help anything, they have to sell the movie they're given and they have to abide by studio "notes". They did their jobs, I don't think this should be blamed on the marketing dept at all. But I'm sure WB will scapegoat a few of them.

Most of the marketing team I've spoken with saw the movie between May 15 - May 25th (roughly), and then again after May 28th (when the final cuts/changes were made.

Don't get me wrong, the marketing team did a GREAT job. They completely sold moviegoers hook, line and sinker on this being an action-driven space opera. Which, obviously, it was not.

yup, and all that's standing between them and franchise gold is making an entertaining movie out of this stuff. They make entertaining movies all the time but they're going to have the never to blame the "genre" for this.

I wonder if they'll show their faces at Comic con again.

DC Comics' GREEN LANTERN was #1 at the box office, shining through with $52.6 million in North America.

Ouch.

Expect WB to offer Nolan scrooge McDuck's safe for him to comeback for one more batman. They really need him and more importantly his name.

See, it wasn't a failure, but at the same time they needed about 30 million more in their take to consider it a success financially.

Like the Last Airbender in 2010, Green Lantern has officially become the punchline of the summer. Now watch GL make less money than Airbender as well.

52. 6 million is respectable numbers . Not great but respectable . Dc can't just throw in the towel and make only Batman films the next 10 years . Batman iss my favorite character but there are risks to oversatuarting him . They need to greenlight aWonderwoman as their next project imo. Most recognizable character besides Batman & Supes

After the tv pilot and having the man behind the rejuvenation of GL onboard to oversee, with this messing being the best they can do, they better stay the hell away from WW.

same composer and everything, the only problem for GL is that the blame can't be chalked up to crazy old M. Night this time.

They're making bad decisions on an executive level imo.
They booted Whedon from Wonder woman only to see him probably make the 3rd biggest comic book film ever with avengers next year and they way they've handed every aspect of gl is a joke.

from showing up at comic con with 6 posters and paying kid to ask the star to say the oath(clever:cwink:) to that first trailer to the damn suits to pretty much the end result. This could have gone any of 10 ways and it's going the worst possible as far as what they can control.

no ads then a blitz of ads 10 days before release. all they had to do was bring the 3D trailer to last years comic con and it would have been a wrap.

Fault of the film's (possible) failure lies on many people but not marketing team. After all, you can only market what you're given. Plus, they sold this movie as an epic space opera akin to Star Wars. Although that was wrong to do from an ethical standpoint, it was a good marketing strategy from a business standpoint.

Also, this film never had a teaser/announcement trailer. Nothing. Footage was shown at Comic Con like Thor (although Thor's was "leaked" online) but nothing came out of GL till November.

the entire trailer/TV spot strategy was **** up from the get go

You mean Hangover 2 and Harry Potter 7 box office money

According to David Poland:
WB is admitting $200 million and $150m marketing… but that is said to be about $50m short by insiders who like to gossip.
So $350 million maybe even $400 million?

WTF is wrong with WB? they make steaming pile of a movie and spend this much extra cash on it?

Wow... WB it's just a cluster****.

Could this be the biggest screw up WB's ever had with an adaptation? With marketing and quality. It's usually one or the other. But they managed to **** up both.
