Green Lantern Script Review

The guy he cast as Batman is currently 21 years old. He's only 4 months older than me, for christ's sake! I am nowhere near old enough to play the goddamn Batman!!!

See, that's a better reason than making fun of a guy's name. (Although, if I was the grandson of a billionaire, I could accept a less than cool name as well.)

Although, frankly, I don't necessarily think it's a dealbreaker. Orson Welles portrayed a middle aged and older character when he was 24 years old. You can fake crow's feet with a little makeup. The lack of experience and height were much bigger concerns with Hammer than his age or funny name.

Is it so much to ask that people don't resort to inaccurate shorthand when discussing/criticizing a potential project? We know very little about what the project was actually going to be. And I don't see the point of criticizing George Miller for having "off the mark" ideas when you don't know that was true. And nobody here knows anything of detail about what the shooting script actually was.

I dont think anyone was specifically making fun of his name, but rather the fact that nobody had ever heard his name. If Arnie Hammer was the name of a well-known, talented actor, nobody would be saying anything. But when you hear he's been cast as Batman you're like "Who the f*** is Arnie Hammer?!?"

You don't think DC comic movies should be accurate?

I want them to be good adaptions. Accuracy can vary for various reasons and sometimes things do need to be sacrificed to do that. It should only as a last resort, of course.

I'm fine as long as the adaption is true to the concepts spirit, its a quality story and the characters are recognizable.

You don't think the following wasn't making fun of the guy's name?

Plus the man wanted to cast guys names Arm and Hammer and DJ Corona as Batman and Superman??

Now, granted, I have questions about whether these guys can act too. I don't have to resort to silly puns involving a guy's name to make that point though.

Heck, I remember when fans on the internet loved to lobby for an unknown for the part of a superhero. Times have changed. I shudder to think what people would have made of skinny Christopher Reeves back in the day.

How much did the audience know about Reeve before the internet?

He has a very impressive resume which would have calmed down the rational Superman fans fears.

How much of fandom on the internet is truly "rational"? Heath Ledger had an impressive resume, but there was still a portion of fandom that freaked and resorted to "Brokebat Mountain" jokes. Michael Keaton had an impressive resume, albeit with only one real serious movie to his credit. People freaked about Hugh Jackman. I can really imagine all the pictures about how skinny Chris Reeves was. And many probably would complain that he was too young too. Heck, there's plenty on the internet that keep trying to cast wrestlers and bodybuilders instead of actual actors.

Which isn't to defend George Miller's cast, except to say that nobody here saw the screentests and auditions so we don't really know what he saw.

But, we've truly digressed. My point remains, nobody really knows what George Miller had planned with any specificity, there's been no detailed script review, no leaked photos of the actors in costume, no leaked preproduction art, nothing. For all we know, he had a bright, shiny, cutting edge visual JL planned that could translate seamlessly to bringing a GL movie to life.

"The other difference is also introducing Hector Hammond into the story line and making him the big threat to Earth or Gaia if you prefer."

I was really happy to hear this. Hector Hammond is something of a guilty pleasure of mine. Despire his inherent lameness, I think Johns has made him into a creepy, frightening character, to the point where I think he could be a great villain in this movie.

How do you see him fitting into the movie? I could see his origin being simplified into something akin to the intro Johns has given him in the current "Secret Origins" arc, where he's exposed to the meteorite because it fuels Abin Sur's spaceship. Something that ties his beginnings directly into Hal Jordan's beginnings as a Green Lantern.

Then, while Hal goes off to train on Oa and eventually fight Legion, Hammond continues to mutate, ultimately becoming a major threat that Hal has to return to Earth to stop. So Legion is essentially, as someone else put it, a "straw man", something to keep Hal busy until the film's true villain - Hector Hammond - emerges in the film's third act.

And as for who to play him? David Straithairn:

The great thing about a GL movie is that there is so much of them, I hope they do Kyle after Hal and go into the story of Ion that would really kick ass. As Kyle as Ion was the best green Lantern ever bar none.

I think this is a good start but if I had my way they would film 3 at once pick an unknown and make a masterpiece set in space:up:

More John Stewart, please.

I only found out about the Green Lantern movie like 5 days ago and now it's all I can think about, Green Lantern is my third favorite super hero and it's a dream come true to find out he could have a movie adaption coming out.

Also how ironic is it that the GL comics being released right now are his Secret Origin...coincidence...I think not...okay maybe it is.

I dont think they will just give each Lantern their own movie. It looks like this movie will set up Guy Gardner for the sequel. I am sure John Stewart will also be in the sequel. Kyle will most likely have to wait for part 3. It starts with Hal and ends up being a team movie for part 2 and 3.

John Stewart will be featurett on the Justice League movie, so, they might don't even get him to this franchise. I Also hope theyn don't bring on Kyle. He is cool, but i don't want to see Hal becoming Parallax on the movie screen.

I agree.

Kyle needs to saved for later on.

After Hal's turned into Parallax. That would be an awesome movie!

I Don't agree.

Parallax Hal should stay away from the movies. That would be my line-up:

GREEN LANTERN:

Abin Sur, the green lantern of the sector 2814 crash land on Earth, severially wounded, and makes his ring find a substitute. The choose one is Hal Jordan, a brave, but rackless test pilot from the Ferris Aircraft. After receveing the ring and facing off a creature know as Legion to protect his friends Tom Kalmuka and Carol Ferris, Hal is led by Tomar-Tu to Oa, where the is introduced to the Green Lantern prophecy and trained by Killowog, and even faces Legion again, when discovers that it followed him. Meanwhile, Carol Ferris's boyfriend Hector Hammond finds a strange meteopr among the shattered pieces of Abin Sur's spaceship. The radiation mutates Hammond in a strange creature with mental powers. Drove to madnesse, Hammond tries to destroy the world in his will to get smarter, and Hal faces him, revealing his secret to Tom in the process. Reconizing Hal's courage, the Guardians summon Thaal Sinestro, the best Green Lantern ever know, to train him. Sinestro was actually working with Legion on a plan to destroy the guardians and take control of the corps, so, he could organize them as he sees better.

GREEN LANTERN 2:

The Guardians of the Universe determine that Hal Jordan's training requires the expertise of another Green Lantern. Jordan is paired with Sinestro of Korugar, who reportedly has the most orderly of all Green Lantern Corps-controlled sectors. Sinestro grudgingly agrees to further train Hal Jordan, and immediately appears during a especial airplane test. Meanwhile, Green Lanterns start to be abducted in several sector, and the duo is summoned to investigate. They end up in Biot, a mechanical planet, home to the Manhunters, robots first used by the guardians before the Green Lanterns. The androids are preparing a big invasion to Oa to steal the central battery and Jordan and Sinestro are captive. While Jordan scapes and fight the planet perils, the guardians decide to summon the substitutes to the emergency. Among then, the arrogant Guy Gardner, that decides to go to Biot alone to prove himself before others. The new dua fights the planet menaces and ends up facing the bit thread: The Manhunter-1, a elder manhunter that keep a battery on his chest and it's extremelly powerfull. There's a big fight between the Lanterns and the Manhunters, and Hal and Guy end up saving Oa. During the crisis, Sinestro lost contact with Korugar and decides to investigate. Worried, Hal follows him and discovers he is controlling the planet with iron fist, and, deceptionated, report to the guardians, that ban Sinestro to the Anti-matter universe of Qward. Before, he swears vengeance.

GREEN LANTERN III.

Manipulating the armers of Qward, Sinestro makes them build a yellow central battery and Sinestro builds a ring from his own will-power to get revenge against Hal Jordan. With his powers, he comes back to our universe and awakes the Zamorans, female Guardians that control cristalyzed power sources that incorpour on Green Lanterns love interestes to mate and kill them. Arrogant, Sinestro sets a Star Shappire invasion that even affects Hal Jordan's love interest Carol Ferris and others. Meanwhile, he gets back to Oa and attacks the central battery, willing to awake Parallax, a fear entity trapped inside it.

What's awesome about GL is that there are enough really, really good stories to make like 10 movies, if they had that kinda time. It almost sucks knowing they probably wont be able to make enough movies to get to Ion, the Sinestro Corps War, and now the different colored Corps like the Red Lanterns and whatnot. GL could last longer than any other franchise if they wanted.

The WB and writers asked him not to talk anymore. He agreed.

He'll probably have some exclusive deals with scoops coming down the road.

I feel the same way.

What is it with studios who only think their A-list franchises can produce many films but their lesser franchises are lacking? Or giving up on franchises after a trilogy or when the last film fails while the previous films were successes.

It's very frustrating to see such potential wasted.

Very few franchises go past a trilogy. Actors get older, the creative team begins to drop out, and most importantly, audiences move on. Only the true elite of film brands can still generate the same excitement 20 years down the line.

Harry Potter at 5 movies and not slowing down. Will be at 8 movies released in 10 years. that's a pretty big deal. And that's WB right there.

WB shouldn't shut IESB down, since when the stuff is out, its out. And since they like it, its good promotion for a potential GL movie. Lol, I know, probably illegal leaks and what not. But this is part of the business now. Everything's getting out.

People were posting spy pics of Tom Cruise in his costume for Tropic Thunder here MONTHS ago.

Very few franchises go past a trilogy.

Most movie franchises aren't serial based in nature. It is with super-hero comics.

Actors get older, the creative team begins to drop out,

All of the can be replaced.

It just takes new people who have the talent and vision to make the franchise work by exploiting its mythos. Film makers don't have to start from scratch if they read the comics themselves. They're brimming with potential in the right hands.

and most importantly, audiences move on.

Audiences don't need to move on if the material is good and depending on how good film makers take the franchise they could bring them back.
