Green Lantern Script Review

Once again . . . HARRY POTTER.

Shrek is going to probably go 4 films and even more. But it's already gotten hella stale and lame.

Harry Potter is limited potential. All it has is 7 novels to adapt from.

Manhunter has much more material to use then that.

It's still 8 movies in 10 years, with probably a better record and consistency that most other franchises will never have. Third movie is when the movies just start getting fatigue usually. Look at Spider-man 3. Shrek 3. Pirates 3. Talk of more Pirates movies died down a lot after At World's End.

Universal does want to make 2 more Bourne movies.

I think they already have started production on a fourth film, followed by a fifth (I heard they wanted six).

If other franchises were treated like that maybe they'd have done better.

I have no problem with franchises taking breaks every few years. The successful ones do that like James Bond and Batman.

Third movie is when the movies just start getting fatigue usually.

I don't see it as that simple. Many mistakes do happen with the sequels, specially the third ones. Film makers can get lazy, the studios go for the quick buck, edgy franchises get toned down so much its loses the point why the franchise was successful in the first place, quality lowers etc.

Look at Spider-man 3.

Spider-man 3's main problem was Venom. If it wasn't there the movie would have been great, not mediocre.

Shrek 3. Pirates 3. Talk of more Pirates movies died down a lot after At World's End.

Both franchises didn't have huge mythos to tap into like serial super-hero franchises do. Neither had the quality of their previous installments.

Isn't the reason why no-one wants more Pirates movies is because 3 was awful? That would hurt any successful movie franchise. If they had kept the quality up this wouldn't have happened at all.

Universal does want to make 2 more Bourne movies.

How much are they creating from scratch? I've heard the movies have gone in a totally different direction to the novels.

The movies create most everything from scratch after a certain point. HOWEVER, there are the newer non-Ludlum novels that have ideas they could recycle. Even the Bond movies would still recycle ideas from Fleming stories and put them in movies unrelated to the stories in which the ideas came from.

But either way, it's a franchise that didn't suffer from the third movie curse. Each movie made more money and got better reviews than the last. That's rare to happen. It makes perfect sense that Universal would want more, and for Damon and Greengrass it's a nice paycheck.

The problem is, the Bourne exists right now as such an awesome trilogy, do you really want to risk messing that up?

Also Dirty Harry went up to 5 movies.

It is good that this is happening.

I just think other franchises should be getting similar treatment. Especially comic ones.

"The other difference is also introducing Hector Hammond into the story line and making him the big threat to Earth or Gaia if you prefer."

I was really happy to hear this. Hector Hammond is something of a guilty pleasure of mine. Despire his inherent lameness, I think Johns has made him into a creepy, frightening character, to the point where I think he could be a great villain in this movie.

How do you see him fitting into the movie? I could see his origin being simplified into something akin to the intro Johns has given him in the current "Secret Origins" arc, where he's exposed to the meteorite because it fuels Abin Sur's spaceship. Something that ties his beginnings directly into Hal Jordan's beginnings as a Green Lantern.

Then, while Hal goes off to train on Oa and eventually fight Legion, Hammond continues to mutate, ultimately becoming a major threat that Hal has to return to Earth to stop. So Legion is essentially, as someone else put it, a "straw man", something to keep Hal busy until the film's true villain - Hector Hammond - emerges in the film's third act.

And as for who to play him? David Straithairn:

Great plot suggestions! :gl:

You could also have the connection with Hammond/Carol since I think in Secret Origins they were dating at first, or rather Hammond really liked her.

Sounds good! Could Definitely be worse!! Not so sure why they're going down the retconned out of continuity Legion route! Why not just adapt what Geoff Johns is doing with the origin in the book? In fact, why not just let Johns rewrite the script? Read somewhere he began in movies anyway...

Wes:

Johns began as an assistant to directors in movies. He was even on the commentary of Lethal Weapon 4.

He's branched off into tv and cartoon writing and producing, too.

I would love a Green Lantern movie but I don't know how the whole weakness to yellow would work on screen.

If a man in a bat suit fighting crime works, who says yellow being a villain won't?

That is not at all comparable. The man in the batsuit concept can be told through practical explanations and semi-believable foundations.

Weakness for a color on the other hand....

They've established Parallax as being the reasoning behind the color weakness. I wouldn't mind if that was alluded to in this film.

Yeah, they'd have to hint at the reason for it, wihtout giving it away in the first movie. Similar to what Secret Origins does, where the yellow weakness is brought up, Hal tries to question it, and no one will tell him. Make it obvious there's more to it, leaving the audience wondering for future films. It'll work fine.

I am too lazy to look for an "official thread", but if I find it I will merge it.

A few cameos include a certain mild mannered reporter from the Daily Planet, a certain college football coach with the last name of Gardner (who we are promised in the script we will see more of in the second film) and loads of other characters sure to keep fanboys orgasmic throughout.

Back to the script - The story follows the traditional Hal Jordan/Green Lantern story lines to a certain degree including the battle between Legion and Abin Sur, Abin Sur's crash landing on Earth, as well as the choosing of Hal Jordan over Guy Gardner and Clark Kent.

Parts are straight out of the Emerald Dawn series including Jordan's simulator being ripped out of the training center and flown to a dying Abin Sur and Hal Jordan going to Oa to help defeat Legion.

The major difference is in the Sinestro character arch. I don't want to give too much away but the writers were very careful to stay true to the character without blowing their load on the first film.

The other difference is also introducing Hector Hammond into the story line and making him the big threat to Earth or Gaia if you prefer.

From the first major beat of the story - that is sure to bring a tear - to the revelations at the end of the movie that easily set up prequels as well as sequels this script has it all. Also, unlike other recent superhero movies, this Green Lantern story has science fiction elements such as visiting other planets and major space battles.

It's a quick read and is a mere 109 pages but is action packed from the beginning to end. It has the potential to be bigger than Iron Man or maybe even The Dark Knight.

good stuff Showy thanks for posting this.

this has certainly improved from that Jack Black farce they were going with a few years ago (i still cant believe they were seriously considering bankrolling that). if its true that they're gonna feature Kent in the film i was wondering if they would be using Routh, given that the current Superman franchise is in limbo of even continuing at all.

also, about Greg Berlanti or George Miller helming this project: i've been a strong supporter of Miller since his Lorenzo's Oil days and i still think he's a perfect director to helm a superhero movie, but there is just a special quality in a film if the writer of the screenplay is the same person directing the shots, hence my hesitancy to grant this GL movie to Miller over Berlanti. i know that Berlanti doesnt have much directing credits to his name but that doesnt mean he doesnt have the talent to pull this off. maybe he just wasnt given enough opportunity to do directing stints, just sayin'.

I Don't agree.

Parallax Hal should stay away from the movies. That would be my line-up:

GREEN LANTERN:

Abin Sur, the green lantern of the sector 2814 crash land on Earth, severially wounded, and makes his ring find a substitute. The choose one is Hal Jordan, a brave, but rackless test pilot from the Ferris Aircraft. After receveing the ring and facing off a creature know as Legion to protect his friends Tom Kalmuka and Carol Ferris, Hal is led by Tomar-Tu to Oa, where the is introduced to the Green Lantern prophecy and trained by Killowog, and even faces Legion again, when discovers that it followed him. Meanwhile, Carol Ferris's boyfriend Hector Hammond finds a strange meteopr among the shattered pieces of Abin Sur's spaceship. The radiation mutates Hammond in a strange creature with mental powers. Drove to madnesse, Hammond tries to destroy the world in his will to get smarter, and Hal faces him, revealing his secret to Tom in the process. Reconizing Hal's courage, the Guardians summon Thaal Sinestro, the best Green Lantern ever know, to train him. Sinestro was actually working with Legion on a plan to destroy the guardians and take control of the corps, so, he could organize them as he sees better.

GREEN LANTERN 2:

The Guardians of the Universe determine that Hal Jordan's training requires the expertise of another Green Lantern. Jordan is paired with Sinestro of Korugar, who reportedly has the most orderly of all Green Lantern Corps-controlled sectors. Sinestro grudgingly agrees to further train Hal Jordan, and immediately appears during a especial airplane test. Meanwhile, Green Lanterns start to be abducted in several sector, and the duo is summoned to investigate. They end up in Biot, a mechanical planet, home to the Manhunters, robots first used by the guardians before the Green Lanterns. The androids are preparing a big invasion to Oa to steal the central battery and Jordan and Sinestro are captive. While Jordan scapes and fight the planet perils, the guardians decide to summon the substitutes to the emergency. Among then, the arrogant Guy Gardner, that decides to go to Biot alone to prove himself before others. The new dua fights the planet menaces and ends up facing the bit thread: The Manhunter-1, a elder manhunter that keep a battery on his chest and it's extremelly powerfull. There's a big fight between the Lanterns and the Manhunters, and Hal and Guy end up saving Oa. During the crisis, Sinestro lost contact with Korugar and decides to investigate. Worried, Hal follows him and discovers he is controlling the planet with iron fist, and, deceptionated, report to the guardians, that ban Sinestro to the Anti-matter universe of Qward. Before, he swears vengeance.

GREEN LANTERN III.

Manipulating the armers of Qward, Sinestro makes them build a yellow central battery and Sinestro builds a ring from his own will-power to get revenge against Hal Jordan. With his powers, he comes back to our universe and awakes the Zamorans, female Guardians that control cristalyzed power sources that incorpour on Green Lanterns love interestes to mate and kill them. Arrogant, Sinestro sets a Star Shappire invasion that even affects Hal Jordan's love interest Carol Ferris and others. Meanwhile, he gets back to Oa and attacks the central battery, willing to awake Parallax, a fear entity trapped inside it.
That sounds like a great way to go about gl. I dont know much on gl and his villains but maybe chance 2/3 up a bit to feature other GL villains instead of making sinstro the threat or partial threat for 3 films.

AMAZING!

YEah, I just read this and came here to this discuss the LR of Green Lantern! IT sounds fantastic! GL is my favorite Superhero and I'm glad he's not only getting a movie, but one based on an amazing script. Hopefully they won't change too much in rewrites or something.

Also, it was an amazing surprise to learn that [BLACKOUT]Alan Scott[/BLACKOUT] plays a significant role in the film! That's brilliant and more than I could've hope for.

I can't wait for this film to get made, I hope they pick NATHAN FILLION for Hal! However, judging by the script he may be too old...

YEAH!

Sounds like an awesome review, and gives us a good deal more detail on plot and character. Though the one thing I would have liked to see would have been some mention of Sinestro, and his role in the movie. Other than that, my hype-o-meter for "Green Lantern" has just gone up another few notches.

Yeah, I agree, I would've loved to hear more about Sinestro's role in the film. Since Green Lantern Rebirth he has certainly become one of my favorite comic book villains of all time. I see him very much as being like Lucifer the Angel that fell from heaven and became a demon.

The public will buy anything as long as its executed properly. LOTR was all about a magic ring that corrupts its wielders. GL has a mythos much less abstract then that. It also deals with technology not magic. That will make it easier to explain how things work.
