Fantasy Greta Gerwig to direct two “The Chronicles of Narnia” films for Netflix

I don't know, I feel like meaningless trolling is what has gotten us into this mess. Intentionally pissing people off without some larger point or constructive endgame seems self-defeating, and by extension culture wars are a mistake. Without real power to back up and enforce your point of view, all you're doing is giving the other side ammunition. Does "owning" someone ever translate to meaningful dialogue or a positive outcome?

I'm not saying the default mode of operating should be appeasement, but it seems pretty childish and petulant to make decisions based on how many people on the other side this will enrage. Creative choices should always come from a place of artistic integrity. Once you start thinking about how the audience will react you're no longer making art, you're making a product.

That said, I have no strong feelings about Narnia. I'm perfectly willing to give Gerwig's take a chance. I'm not religious, so the overt Christianity of this series kind of repulsed me. I never read the books, and I've only seen the first two films. I liked the scores, Swinton and Neeson, but otherwise they felt like off-brand Lord of the Rings, and the YA-ness of it all felt too childish for me.
I would argue that the reason we're in this position is that the right has been allowed to be openly terrible, as their political leaders have embraced it. While the defacto leftist politicians have spent their time trying to appease those openly embracing that terribleness, while shunning those pushing for a better, more equal world on their side.

Everything is considered openly antagonistic to the right. Whether it's supporting a woman's right to choose or simply the recognition of a member of minority in the face of hate.

I think this is very interesting conversation to have around Gerwig, because a big part of Barbie is emphasizing that one should not appease those right wing instincts. After her ending for Little Women shows an artist doing just that, so she can continue to hold onto her own work.

I honestly think the only reason this movie matters is Greta. The Chronicles are dated in a few ways, especially after the start. Why the original film series just died on the vine. Getting people excited for them is a challenge and I think Greta's has shown three times her leftist instincts have worked in not only getting attention for her work work, but creating good and bankable films.
I remember as a kid before Harry Potter came out and Narnia was basically the gold standard in children's fantasy series...and I just could not for the life of me get into it. I started in chronological order with The Magician's Nephew and I think there were three separate times I tried reading it but I just couldn't do it. Later on in school we read TLTWATW and that went over a little better with me. I liked the movies but it was always interesting to me how Disney just let them fall by the wayside. Prince Caspian didn't do that bad despite being released between Iron Man and Indiana Jones that summer.

But I think part of the problem why it's not as popular is that the cast of characters changes, which is always a tricky thing with franchises. There's no main group like Harry, Ron and Hermione or Frodo and Sam that you stick with from book 1 to book 7.

Given that we seem to be getting Magicians Nephew, and a part of that novel is an analog to the eating from the tree of knowledge, and given that story has been a large basis for the church oppessing women through the ages, is it really a wonder that Gerwig may be going in some radical directions?

Strep is amazing but not sure she has quite the right voice for Aslan. I will see how it plays out though.

I never read the books as a kid but enjoyed the movies a good bit, especially the first.

So is Aslan going to be a female lion in these movies?

yeah that totally skipped my mind at first.

If they dont change it to Lioness then....should be my good judy Meryl

Not sure how that squares with the fact that Aslan is supposed to be a different incarnation of Jesus, who was male. Unless they mix her voice so it doesn't sound strictly female.
