Group Unveils Satan Statue Design for Oklahoma

So they joke about believing in something just to piss off a group of people?

Thanks for giving me another reason to hate Atheists. Like a Vegan who constantly tells me how bad the burger I'm eating is bad for me. Just stop talking, you're a ****ing moron.

In fairness, and I do think this is silly, but it's the Christians who put up that monument who started this fight.

This ridiculous statue is a response to that monument.

Is it inappropriate? Yeah. But that's the point. Will that point be lost on the people who put up the Christian monument? Probably.

Which is why I think a Satan statue defeats the purpose of putting up a non-Christian monument.

Instead of convincing the other side that there should be freedom of religion you're actually doing the opposite.

I always thought it was dumb to go out of your way to get a rise out of a fundamentalist Christian. What's the point at the end of the day? Just ignore them. This Satanist group will get buzz for a couple of weeks and then will be forgotten. Bunch of people who end up looking like the fools they are trying to get a rise out of.

People lack foresight. It kills me.

The point is that the Ten Commandments should not be displayed anywhere in a PUBLIC setting. Why should the Christians be allowed to ignore the separation of church and state, but no one else is allowed to?

Why should atheists (or any other religion for that matter) ignore the blatant disregard of the constitution? Do you really think that Christians would just ignore a monument to Allah? Of course not. So why should atheists ignore a Christian monument?

The Satanist statue is obvious trolling, but it's supposed to make a point. If Christians are so against the statue, then they should realize that other religions (or lack of) are so against their display of the Ten Commandments. In other words, take down the damn Commandments and people will stop trying to erect Satanist statues.

But a Satanic statue will not result in a logical response from Christians

It will only embolden their cause and help equate secularism with Satanism.

A Satan statue is the worse way to reason with Christians. They will just say to each other, "See! I told you separation of church and state was the work of the devil!".

It's worth it to get the debate going. The best outcome for this will be for the Ten Commandments to be taken down.

That means it's okay to hate Christians because of Westboro Baptist Church.

You can't take an entire group of people, stereotype them then defend your stereotype by using the worst example of a group and saying they're all the same.

Atheist Satanists is a contradiction of terms anyways but there's no reasoning this out since it's apparent your mind is made up.

Because it's not the way it should be done. "Oh gee, I want a big ol' Satan statue here" isn't the way to do it. You don't combat something perceived as foolish by looking foolish yourself. This will accomplish nothing.

How should it be done then? Sue the city? They're going to look "foolish" no matter how they approach this. At least this way, they're showing everyone how ridiculous it is to have religious symbols in a public setting to begin with. They're using the most offensive person in Christianity to highlight how they feel about the Ten Commandments.

If you want someone to know how offensive something they say, do, or display is to you, you do the same thing to them and say, "how you feel about so and so is how I feel about so and so."

How many times on these threads or just in general have Atheists done the same to Christians? Find the worst of us then make a generalization about the entire religion.

This happens everywhere.

I can do that. I can point out the atrocities Christians have done for centuries and you will ignorantly dismiss every last one of them or find some excuse for it.

Well, you know, it's better than what the Christians used to do to atheists.

Like, burn them at the stake.

It's fair game. The religious only have a problem when the people they've oppressed for years start to push back. Now, it's called being "offensive" and "intolerant." :whatever:

Being civil is the better alternative.

Nope, all that does is escalate the situation. If someone hurls racial slurs at you, do you think hurling racial slurs back at them will make them see the error of their ways? Of course it doesn't. Being salty as f*** doesn't change anything. Think about it.

Disappointing. :whatever:

That's like me hating all Christians just because of Westboro baptist Church antics. I thought you were more open-minded and understanding that just like Christians, atheists aren't some monolithic hive-mind who are all militant with their beliefs. I'm atheist and take a very live and let live approach and don't provoke or clash with Christians, unless I'm defending my own views in response to an unprovoked criticism or attack from them.

What does that have to do with y'all? Unless you two are hundreds upon hundreds of years old, what is the point of bringing up old stuff? This is like me holding a grudge against white people for slavery. It wasn't my fight nor is it my place to be harbor hostile feelings because of it. At least be contemporary, y'all.

:o

You can't equate satanists with atheists !

Satanists are a very specific set of people with a very specific set of beliefs (look up the quotes from LaVey). Atheists just don't believe in god - that's it.

How do some of you NOT see that the door for this was opened the moment the 10 commandments was put there?

Either every belief has equal right to put their monuments at the state capital or NO ONE CAN!

It's that simple!

Sure, I think its a troll move - but its an effective troll move. Look at it objectively. The beliefs of christianity can be seen as just as absurd and with no place in government. Thus, pastafarians, satanists with their ironic winged goat statue, highlighting that absurdity.

Look how mad some of you are getting over it. They're just symbols. By flipping out you're making their point for them.

I find the whole concept of Satanists just silly. Like a group of basement-dwellers who wear black and follow the Devil, not because they believe in Satan or any laws he came up with, but because they want other people to think they're "scary" because they worship the polar opposite of the most dominant and accepted religion in America. They were probably always outsiders, so now they're trying to embrace it to its fullest by being extra edgy. But I think they're mostly just pathetic and lost and don't really believe in anything. :o Not even the bible gives us a full picture of what Satan believes in or what he even is, so how can someone declare they're a Satanist and really believe that crap?

I'd actually love to see a "legitimate" Satanist come in this thread and try to reply to this only so I can see what kind of point they'd try to make.

Meanwhile...

Yeah, I'm finding a lot of the dismissal of satanists in here in to be pretty ignorant. A LOT assumptions being made on practically nothing it seems.

I love how Atheists tend to just hate Christians. They never talk about Jihadist's or the Israeli Palestinian slaughtering's over the rule of Jerusalem for centuries. You know why? Because most Atheists in the US grew up Christian and chose it as their personal vendetta to stick it to anyone who believes in Christianity.

Believe me I get it, Christians did some horrible stuff a thousand years ago, but so did every other group of human beings since the beginning of time.

I also get that you guys don't believe in a God, I have no problem with it. What I do have a problem with is the constant backhanded comments about believing in "make believe friends and talking snakes". Which clearly is yet again another example of crude and insensitive comments made to just get a rise.

It's people who pull that bullsht that I have no respect for.

Except when they do talk about those things (I know, because I'm an atheist and I've talked about how without religion the Israel/Palestine situation wouldn't be as intense as it is).

Christianity tends to be the main focus here in the west because in the US, UK, and throughout Europe, guess what?

Christianity tends to be the predominant religion! So OF COUUUUUUUURSE it's going to be the main focus of atheist criticism. It doesn't take a genius to realize that.

I could care less that you're offended by insensitive comments or a satan statue. Spare me the victim complex.

Says the guy who made fun of the Pastafarian for what he was wearing when he was sworn in :whatever:

Pot, meet kettle.

Generalizing again. I don't know what atheist wronged you so terribly in your life, but I was born Jewish and most atheists I know are Jewish or just weren't raised in religious households period. I also totally disagree with everything you just said. I'm extremely critical of Muslim jihadists, just like another atheist Bill Maher. I do NOT hate Christians, and have many religious friends. Why don't you make an atheist friend so you can see atheists as people and not some sinister force out to attack you?

Believe me I get it, Christians did some horrible stuff a thousand years ago, but so did every other group of human beings since the beginning of time.

Judging from your last few posts.... Apparently you do.

Fine. Then attack "people who pull that bull****" instead of making blanket attacks against all atheists.
