I don't get the retread of the first movie point, sure he gets bit by a spider and gain his power, and some minor similarities, but it looks overly different
And the thing about "see more superhero movies" or "cliches"? WTF? That's everywhere, by this time no one should expect something new, just wonder if it will be entertaining or not, and characters to like or dislike

72% yikes!

Its a fresh rating but no way the "best Spider-Man movie ever" will have a rating like that. Fanboys are just defending the movie because its still new, they have big faith with the new cast and Garfield's Spider-Man is bad-ass just like in the comics.

Well, the first point is sort of opinion...
Just sayin'. I'm not a fanboy per se. My favorite SM movie is still SM2.
I don't expect this movie to gross a billion dollars, or did I expect it to have a 95% on RT. Did it get lower than what I expected? Yes. But my guess ranged seemed responsible at the time with the kind of reviews we were getting early on. 82-85%. I thought it was a great movie and I personally prefer it over SM1, but greatest SM movie ever? No, not to me personally. Greatest CBM ever? NO, not to me. Greatest movie ever? HELL NO, now you're just blind!

Batman 89 is rated lower than Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and yet to a lot of people it's still THE Batman movie.

Oh noes. The reviewers didn't like it that much? That must mean something valuable. For someone.

89% is a great rating and Batman 89 is my favorite Batman movie.
Nope... 89 is the year, lol. The actual rating is 70%, and 57% according to the Top Critics.

And yes, it is crap; that's why I don't care for the RT ratings anymore.

I personally believe it's going to be Superman Returns all over again. Fanboys and critics are overall favorable about the movie NOW, but in a few years, I can see people turning on it. I think it will depend on how well the sequel goes. If the sequel isn't drastically better than this film, there will be problems ...

I don't think that The Amazing Spider-Man is "Superman Returns bad," but I can see this movie following the same road as Supes did in terms of favor-ability. I'm already liking this movie less the more I think about it. I walked out of the movie underwhelmed, but kind of chill about it. Now that I can think about what I saw, I'm becoming more and more displeased with it.

Now, with that said, people can like whatever they want to like, just as people can dislike whatever they want to dislike. I'm just stating a prediction.

I think it will be the opposite.

Like Batman Returns, Predator 2, The Temple of Doom, Return of the Jedi, Big Trouble In Little China, Office Space, The Fountain, Transformers the Movie, They Live, and Fight Club.

All disappointed at the box office and with critics only to have an enlightened, cult following later.

Except none of those movies ever passed 900 m WW like ASM could.

I loved the first Transformers; felt that they botched the sequels.

I'm pretty sure whatever critics feel about TASM will change according to how successful TASM2 is.

EDIT: wait Batman 89 is rated 70%?...that's ridiculous.

As someone said before on a different thread, I feel like the movie we have now is a marker to show that we have dedicated people on Spider-Man now.... well, everyone except Avi Arad and the heads at Sony.

It has a 72% on RT, it's Certified Fresh, and it's making good money. That's all pretty solid to me. I understand that it's not in best interests to have big expectations, but I'm really hoping that they nail the sequel.

72% at Rotten Tomatoes is good, but not amazing. I can't believe it's that low though, because judging this movie on its own merits I would've estimated that it would be 80-90% if not more. This is just a well made movie, period.

And yes, in many ways it's the same exact movie as the 2002 version. That version sits at 89% right now. Amazing didn't do some things as well, but it also did some things better. I won't argue against the idea that this reboot was too soon, which Amazing doesn't do much to refute. But should it be penalized this much?

In the eyes of critics? Yes, unfortunately. In a movie that was trying to remove all baggage, it found new baggage of its own.

Professional movie criticism is a peculiar job. In theory they're supposed to recommend movies that people will like, or warn them against crap that they'll hate. But the thing is that critics have long since diverged from the tastes of the normal moviegoer. There are still lots of movies that are liked by both (for example, The Dark Knight). But there are lots of movies where a critic's opinion is almost useless.

There are almost no standards for this profession. Nobody fact checks critics, if they get some factual details on a movie wrong. No critic will ever be fired because his recommendations are almost useless to the average person. Also, many critics operate under length restrictions (like many other article writers), so their reviews might not even be that detailed or insightful. I've seen many, many reviews which were no more than single paragraphs that amount to "The plot was silly and I didn't feel for the characters." There are lots of forum posts which are far deeper and more analytical than that.

Aggregator websites like Rotten Tomatoes are helpful, because by looking at the big picture, the impression of a movie is less affected by any one critic's opinions. But its score still based on critics' biases. In general, critics are much more sensitive to perceived "cliches" or retreads, probably because they watch movies so much more than normal people. They give high marks for innovative story structure and filmmaking technique, which people may or may not actually care about. Critics are far less likely to take a bottom-line approach to a movie and ask the basic question: "Does it have a fun, enjoyable story that entertains?"

I still look at basic Rotten Tomato percentage. But now I also factor in fan reviews as well as CinemaScore (random exit polling of normal theater audiences), to get a better idea of movies ahead of time.

If it got that it's pretty excellent, not forgetting how soon it was released in some countries and less than a week of release in the rest of the world
