This show started really well, but this whole angle of Nate framing people is wearing out my interest.
Happy Independence Day, Guest!
Yeah, I don't think he'll get his comeuppance this season. Especially since he's insulated by a number of factors. With another guy confessing to his crime and Maddie outright telling people that he's innocent, he's definitely getting away with abusing her. And Tyler is never going to admit to what Nate did to him because then he could go down for being a sex offender. And Jules can get screwed the same way if she speaks out against him (though I don't totally know if that's how those laws work; she sent him pictures of herself so I'm not sure that she would actually get in legal trouble for that, but maybe). And his dad will probably do whatever he can to protect him/cover up his misdeeds. So the only way Nate will get any comeuppance is if someone else is able to expose him for what he is or if somebody kills him.
Was a second season planned all along? If not, then Nate's storyline could be concluded by the end of this season and next season could be a whole other situation. A character like his can become repetitive if he continues to be a bad guy and a redemptive storyline looks too late at this point.
As for Jules' storyline about sending photos of herself, I believe that was taken from a real life situation (or many) where a teenager was charged with distributing child porn for sending naked photos of themselves (to another teenager) and there was a fight to get the law changed.
It was a bit confusing about when things were happening. At first I thought the detective stuff was a fantasy sequence. It was funny as hell though. Rue was working it out (kind of.) She did mention later on in the episode about an event happening earlier, but it was said very quickly. This episode was good but it was confusing as hell. It was like Rue was in her room, depressed and refusing to leave for the whole episode but then suddenly she’s at school playing detective of at Fez’s place. I guess all that happened before her urine strike, but it was unclear. Also, did Jules sleep with that girl for real or did she just imagine it as a result of the drugs?
Yeah, the detective stuff was at least partially a fantasy but I wasn't sure if she actually was in school eyeing up Nate and talking to Lexi or if that was all on the phone.
Also, I hope we get a Lexi-centric episode but if we do, it looks like it won't be this season. And that's a shame because she's slowly become one of the best characters as the show has gone on. Curious whether she's in love with Rue. I had thought she was just a really reliable friend but that kissing scene an episode or two ago made me wonder.
I know what you mean about Lexi. She did seem at first like she was just there to balance out everyone else's crazy, to show that there was someone sensible there. She still does function that way, but as time has gone on we see there's more to her. I hope she doesn't change too much, and I hope nothing bad happens to her- the "innocent" character, but I would like to know more of her story.
I'm so mad about Nate screwing with Fezco, please let someone put this dude in the ground.
You're right, that's better.Fixed.
Yeah, Jules turned into an idiot in this episode. Her dad is a really good, supportive dude and dropping out of high school (apparently) isn't good for anyone. Also, she's known that other girl for what, like a week? Even if you're "in love", that doesn't mean she wants you showing up on her doorstep ready to move in.
I also got tired of the weird musical montages and Rue's mom's neverending voiceover. Like, enough already. It felt like they were just filling time. Meanwhile, Kat and the one nice guy on the show finally get together and they barely spend any time on them. Lexi got some funny lines but we still get little to no insight into her character. We have no idea what happened with Fez and Mouse (I understand cliffhangers but you normally get some indication of what went down and all we got was three guys looking at each other). And the actress who plays Rue's sister's entire role in this show seems to be to stand in hallways, crying.
That said, there was some good stuff here. Nate and Maddie's Bonnie and Clyde relationship saga is as entertaining as it is disturbing. And Nate and his dad fighting and Nate's mental breakdown after was powerful. It's hard to feel sympathy for a sociopath like Nate but there are moments when you do and I almost wonder if he might have been a good person if his dad hadn't instilled his bizarre ideas of pride and ambition in him. I also wonder what was on that CD that Maddie stole. Was that one of Nate's father's sex tapes or was it something else?
All in all, this show has definitely been one of the best surprises for me this year but I do think this was a lackluster finale. It seemed like they were trying to turn the whole "high school dance finale" trope that is so common in teen movies on its head, but I don't think they totally pulled that off because as a whole, it was one of the least interesting episodes.
