He-man Sequel Series (Netflix)

I hadn’t watch the original cartoon much while growing up. It kinda passed by me, I guess due to timing and whatnot. Just knew of it. I did check out the one on Cartoon Network and thought it was pretty entertaining.

I’m amused by the negative reaction given (what I remember of) the quality of the original cartoon and how I tend to look at these childish things we enjoy from the outside in… just another example of grown ass adults acting so angry and annoyed at goofy ass cartoons (or things based on them). Of course, there are examples of things being bad or weak, but I don’t see how one could be so negative with this show even if you’re not feeling it or feel you’re not the audience it’s aimed at.

I think it’s fine and really my problems with it come from the Netflix model of how to release episodes. And I guess not being too knowledgeable about this version of the characters since this is technically a sequel so whatever possible weight from knowledge of their relationships and whatnot is missing. But they tell enough that one can easily infer things and fill in the blanks as any child likely does while watching.

Also there’s a documentary on Netflix about the development of the original toys, comics, and cartoon which is pretty interesting to watch. It goes up to the Cartoon Network toon and how Mattel had their success and failures with the franchise (including a little bit about She-Ra).

It's a funny meme, inaccurate though since Adam had his sword and was getting his Sailor Moon on while Skeletor......and He-Man fell for Skeletors trap in the first episode.....

I guess if you ignore the comics, toy lines, books, and even games that came out sinc that time yeah.

The comics were a drop in the bucket. Don't lecture me on the books. I bought the book releases from Dark Horse Publishing. You know what they are? The books are compilation pieces. They're coffee table books. I like those books, but you want to know something? The books don't represent a healthy and robust IP because all the books were essentially were compilations of old material, the old 1980s minicomics, the newspaper strips, or photos of the old toys.

Games? What games? The browser based games? The mobile games? Please. There was hardly some Injustice or Batman Arkham level AAA game title that came out for this title.

The toys? Once again, there was classics. And then there was the retro series from Super7 and some various assorted collectibles from Mondo or Funko. That's about it.

I stand by what I said, MOTU has basically been a dead property outside of Classics for almost 2 decades. Now it's finally moving again and getting new material and people are talking about it again for the first time in YEARS. Toys are on actual toy shelves in department stores. They aren't relegated to collector websites or specialty shops. You can walk into a store and find MOTU toys again.

So yes it's dead as long as you refuse to acknowledge the material that was made prior, good of you to repeat that.

What was getting made were high-end, premium collectibles, compilation books, and a yeah a DC Comic series. The games weren't notable or particularly notable. Every once in a while we'd hear about development on the movie which can't get out of development hell.

I like the DC Comics, but outside of the fandom, no one was ever talking about them. Also, the collectibles weren't available at retail. Now I can walk into Walmart or Target and find MOTU on shelves again. That was last possible over 15 years ago.

What games even were there that were actually worth playing?

Why you have to make up stuff and be an ass about it, i really dont get it.
No, its not dead...the IP still makes good money on several things.

On the topic:

The games, well the games never were that good sadly for this IP.
There was more recently a sidescroller for IOS, i think 2012 and that was neat imo, but with He-Man its the same as with any other 80s cartoon or comics in general...i dont understand how the gaming industry doesnt use those IPs more and better.
We could easily swim in He-Man games.

Comics are on and off, DC comics ended 2020 their multiverse He-man story.
The DC comics He-Man stories are quite neat but nothing that will blow people away.
Here and there they release comics but nothing really steady.

The ironic thing is that for which He-Man was created, the toys, is still the place you find most He-Man stuff.
Its more or less however for the older generation, the collectors who are willing to pay 400 bucks for a hordak statue or a 190 bucks castle grayskull.
There are toys for children etc, the wwe has a collaboration with He-Man and stuff.
But its not as much as it once was for sure.
The Brand is alive, but not thriving.
I hope this chances on all 3 fronts.
New comics, new toy lines, new games...that would be neat.

It is amazing how well the sailor moon music fits with the transformation...

Side note about games, but there are two high end games about to come to Kickstarter, and in an example of stupid Mattel has been with licensing, one for North America and one for the EU.

Wait what? You mean video games? How have i not heard about this before?

I just did a quick google search and boy, that is even cooler than a video game.
I was completely left in the dark about this, so thank you @Sithborg .
That looks really cool, i need to get my hands on this.

It's a simple concept really, for a franchise to be dead people have to be doing nothing with it, that clearly was not the case for MOTU, if it was getting comics, still had toys made, had games regardless of what their quality that still isn't nothing.
It's not hard to understand

OK fine, it was close to dead. Happy now? What was being done wasn't very notable.

Here’s some more fan art from me.
Evil-Lyn!
I am very interested to see where they take her in the next couple episodes.

This is one of the ways it benefited the story by taking He-Man and Skel off the board for an extended period. Your supporting cast, good and bad, were able to develop outside the gravitational pull of the main hero and villain with combinations we never imagined and consequences going forward.

I could honestly see this going any number of ways from one extreme to the next.

Maybe Lyn throws in with the forces of good and assists in the clash against her mentor/lover/master what have you?

Or...

Maybe Lyn grabs the brass ring for herself, which was always part of the character in multiple versions? Only now we have this tragic case where she COULD have turned to the side of right on Eternia.

People can complain all they want but in terms of juicy stuff to forward the story and foment drama and character growth the most fertile feilds were and are Teela and Evil-Lyn if you think about it.

Yes...

Bring on Hordak at some point.

This is like MOTU as interpreted by the Thundercats team from the 80's and I'm so there for it.

The first season of Transformers Prime had Megatron in a coma for most of the first season and made Starscream the new leader of the Decepticons until Megatron was healed. It appeared that Megatron "died" at the end of episode 5.

Loved what they did with Starscream and Meg in that show.

Another thing about Transformers: Prime, tons of hype surrounding The Rock being cast as Cliffjumper and The Rock being part of the show's cast. He's killed off in the first five minutes LOL.
