I just finished work, typed this up and posted. Please forgive any spelling errors and whatnot, I just think this story is moving along quite nicely.
Anywho;
My legs ached, my chest burned and my mind was racing just as fast and me and Alexis were sprinting down the abandoned downtown street, running for our lives. Running from people who were seemingly stricken with something which kills them, and then brings them back and mindless killing machines who are intent on eating the flesh of their victims. Not only that, but there are thousands of them behind us. Each of them with one single goal on their minds, to violently kill us and eat us in an animalistic fashion. Now that I think about it, they're acting like predatory animals, it seems as though their hummanity and reason had been stripped away from them. It was pure insanity, pure chaos and none of it made sense.
Alexis was a few metres in front of me, she was firing off that shotgun like crazy at random "ghouls". It seemed the only way to put them down for good was to get them in the head, that seemed to work like a charm. And before she knew it, she was out of ammunition. I finally caught up with and told her leave the weapon, we had to get the hell out of the streets. But where the hell could we go. The city, from what I could tell, was crawling with these things. Not only was their a giant horde behind us, but they were pouring from the dark alleyways as well. They shambled from various entrances leading into buildings. Their mouths hung open with dark nasty fluids spilling out, their arms stretched out, their hands clenching and unclenching at us. They stared at us with lifeless eyes and they all emitted inhuman noises.
The smell was damn near overwhelming, it was the smell of death. Death and decay, and burning flesh. In the distance I could see swirling clouds of smoke rising tall over the buildings, it looked like a damn warzone. We dashed around a corner, the street seemed somewhat clear, give or take a dozen of those creatures were spread among the sidewalks. It wasn't a surprise when they took notice, they slowly stumbled towards us.
"What the hell are we going to do, Frank?" Alexis shouted as the group began to close in, and just a as that happened, the horde behind us made the corner. Suddenly a pair of cold hands grabbed me from behind, I screamed and suddenly there was a loud bang. Both Alexis and I jumped in our shoes as we saw the creature fall to the ground, a nasty hole in it's forehead. There was a man wearing military fatigues, it was a solider! He was standing in front of an entrance way to a hotel, "Get over here!" the soldier shouted as he took aim and took out another one of those creatures.
Alexis and I made haste across the street and towards the hotel entrance, we quickly entered the building and he slammed the door shut. The windows were all boared up, various furniture were pressed up against the glass windows from inside. Within the lobby there was a middle aged man with glasses who was balding, a younger man with tatoos all over his arm, there was a teenage girl with a person who could've been her mother, and then there was the soldier.
"Thankyou for saving us!"
"You're lucky I saw you two when I did, I was just checking the area and thats when I spotted you both running like hell, those bastards are persistent.
We heard countless hands making contact with the barricaded windows and the wall of the hotel. The group of survivors stood their with fear running across their faces, we all glanced at each other.
"We'll be okay, they seem to give up when they lose sight of us" the middle aged man said, "By the way, the names Zachary. The brave soldier is Jim, the younger fellow is Todd. The girls name is Sasha, and her mother Hillary".
"Nice to meet you all" I awkardly said. After me and Alexis introduced ourselves, there came another silence. We listened to the groaning just outside the walls and it slowly died down with time.
Alexis let out an irriated sigh and came out with, "Just what the **** is going on?!"
Jim looked at us, "Nobody really knows what's going on".
"Somebody must know something" Alexis replied, blowing a strand of hair from her eye.
The man who introduced himself as Zachary lit a cigarette and took a long drag from it, he exhaled and he watched as the smoke swirled away from him. He looked at us and began to speak.
"I'm not sure if there is a connection, it was exactly two days ago when what sounded like a thunderclap came from the sky. At the same time there was a brief flash of bright light. And then it started to rain, I mean it was a heavy downpour. Anybody in the streets at the time was soaked. There was something strange about the rain, it was red! It looked like blood, but I don't think it was. The rainwater was just colored by whatever was contaminating the raindrops, i'm not sure what was in the rain though".
"Okay, so how is this responsible" Alexis asked, the entire crowd listened.
"News said it was just algae spores or some dumb**** like that. They don't think the rain and all this ****s thats going down are related. They think it's some kind of chemical spill, or rabies. I've never heard of a chemical make a dead man walk, let alone rabies causing this! I know something about science, and that thunderclap sound I was telling you about, that was a sonic boom caused by a God damn meteorite! I think the rain was colored by a meteor burst, and in the rain was some kind of alien organism, maybe some kind of virus or bacteria" Zachary went on.
"Bull ****ing ****!" Alexis snapped. "Your telling me this is some kind of god damn alien invasion?"
"No, not an invasion. But when that meteorite passed through our atompshere, it contaminated the earth. It's no coiendence that all this is happening shortly afterwards. I'm just saying it's not impossible that space rock came from another planet, bringing along some kind of extraterrestrial contagion with it.Think about it, do you know how many people were outside that day, exposed to this stuff? Do you see the chain reaction? It makes sense!" Zachary replied.
"Regardless of the cause, we've got to focus on what to do now? Is there a cure, is there some kind of military or government plan to save people? How far has this chaos spread?" I interupted.
"Yeah, I know. Everything gone to **** right from the start, there was so many people affected by this. It first started as random acts of violence, to street riots. The police couldn't do anything, and it spread like a fire by the time the military showed up" Zachary went on.
"Well I was part of a military squad which was supposed to help evacuate people. It was pure insanity, especially on the bridges and all. There was so many people trying to leave the city, traffic was going nowhere! People were rushing, ****ing accident after another. It was hard enough to keep people under control, and then they came. By the thousands, those things got into the traffic and were pulling people out of their cars and ****ing biting and scratching whoever they got their hands on. It was bad enough before, but total panick took over and people began to get out of their vehicles and they began to run, I saw countless people trip and get stomped to death" Jim explained.
Everybody was silent, even Alexis who was nearly enraged by Zacharys supposed theory as to the cause of this nightmare.
"My squad was overwhelmed, I saw my fellow teamates get torn apart by these things, and eaten alive. It was horrible. I was the only one, and by luck I found Sasha and Hillary, still in their cars, out of view from those things. We tried to leave town, but there was to many of things, they were attracted by the noise from all those people trying to leave. Thats when I found Zachary, and then Todd. This was the nearest place for shelter" Jim finished.
Alexis glanced at me, and I looked back. I looked at the entire group, Zach was finishing his cigarette. Todd was staring at the floor, Hillary was comforting Sasha and Jim was looking through the cracks between the barricaded windows. I stood there, all that was going through my mind was my wife and child.
