It was the darndest thing, I dialed 911, and it was busy! I guess there's a first for everything, such as the events of the morning so far. David and I sat in the kitchen, he was sitting on a chair near the window, seemingly a million miles away. I couldn't say I blamed him, he had to kill his own mother. My head was still pounding, and arm was incredibly sore. I can't say I felt to good all over, but that wasn't on my mind at the moment. Right now the concern for my wife and child was overwhelming, it felt like there was a snake crawling through my mind, wrapping itself around my brain and making me worry even more. In addition to this, on top of it all, what the hell was going on?
"David, can you tell me what happened here?"
David glanced over his shoulder at me and sighed, he was struggling with his own demons I figured.
"I can't tell you whats going on, but i'll tell you something. Me and my dad were running the combine in the fields like usual when he saw a man stumble into the field. My dad almost ran over him, but he hit the breaks on time. We figured he was drunk or something, the way he was walking. Anyways my dad goes up to him and asks if he's okay, you know? The man looked hurt, like he was bitten on the arms by some animal. Anyways, the man suddenly, I don't know, jolted forward and grabbed hold of my dad biting him on the shoulder! My dad and the man wrestled to the ground and I kicked the crazed fellow off my dad and we both ran back to the house. My dad was bleeding real bad, I didn't know what to do! My mom started crying as well..."
David sat in the chair, his gaze falling to the floor. I could see tears forming in his eyes, he took a deep breath and exhaled.
"We called the police, and they said they would dispatch someone right away, well they never came. Well it wasn't too long until my dad started feeling real sick. It started with a real high fever, and he was puking his guts out. His skin was real pale to, and he started having these real bad shakes, you know? We had to hold him down until they stopped, and then he started talking crazy, like he was losing his mind or something. And then suddenly he passed away, died just like that".
David stood up and cracked his neck and coughed a little bit, he was gathering his thoughts I figured.
"I called for 911, just like you did, there was no response. It didn't make any sense in any shape or form. My mother stayed in the bedroom at my dads side, she was crying, and so was I. But then she started to scream! I quickly ran into the bedroom and there was my dad, slowly sitting up. I'll never forget his face, his eyes. He let out some kind of growl and attacked my mom! Before I could do anything he bit her on the neck! He was acting just like the man that attacked him in the first place! I pulled my mom away from dad, I don't know what happened but I tripped and hit my head against the nightstand, everything went black, you know? And when I woke up..."
David stopped right there and looked right into my eyes, trying to come up with the words to say. I kept my gaze on him, it looked like he was going to lose his mind. It wouldn't be hard to believe considering everything.
"When I woke up, dad was eating her foot. He had torn it off like he was some kind of animal, she wasn't moving anymore. She was dead, I could tell from where I was. I sat up real fast, and he noticed and he growled like some kind of wild animal! All I could do was run! I ran into the barn where we keep the horses, screaming my head off. I don't know how long I was in there for, but thats when my mother came stumbling in, on what was left of her foot. She was hissing, trying to grab at me. But could I do? I ran away from her, avoiding her and I shut the barn doors behind me, leaving her with the horses. I felt horrible, but what could I do?"
David sat at the kitchen table with me, he was wiping tears from his eyes.
"I couldn't go back to the house, not with my dad in there, not with what he became. I hid in the storage shed on the otherside of the house. I don't know how long I was hiding for, but thats when I heard you outside. At first I thought you were one of them, then I heard screams coming from the barn, and thats when I decided to do something, well you know the rest".
"I'm sorry, David. I truly am".
"Yeah, me too".
There was a silence, we were both looking at the surface of the table. Thats when we heard noises coming from outside. David looked at me, and I looked back at him. We saw a shadow moving behind the curtains right next to the table, just outside on the porch. We quietly got up and David peered through the curtain, so did I. It was a man, he was rather tall. There was blood all over him, especially on his arms where there were multiple bite marks. The mans mouth was hanging open and drool spilled out onto the porch. A strange wheezing sound came from him as he mindlessly marched onwards, there was something wrong with him, that much I was sure of.
"Thats the man who attacked my dad!" David cried.
Suddenly we heard the backdoor open and a few clumsy footsteps followed, me and David both shot glances to the back. A figure shambled around the corner, it was another man, a strong looking man. There was a nasty wound on his neck, his upper body soaked with blood. And he stared at us with the most haunting eyes, his pale face contorted as he growled at us. David went pale and he stumbled back against the wall.
"Dad?"
I backed against the wall as well, great, now what?
