Help with an R4?

My friend picked me up an R4 recently, and I only got hold of it today.
he pre loaded it with 160 games and showed me how to use it on his (we where in work, so I didn't have my DS on me to check out my own).

I got my own home and gave it a go, 58 of the games showed up, I figured he just didn't have the time or forgot to put the rest on.
Anyway, I put it on my laptop to have a mess about with it, turns out all the other games that where on his are actually on the R4. they just arnt showing up.
I downloaded Professor layton, first game that came to my mind as everyone asks for it in work. drop and dragged it to the R4 folder, tried it, nothing game up on my DS.
I deleted a file from the R4, checked it on my DS, file was gone.
I've not really had any experience with these things, so if anyone out there has one, it'd be great if you could help me out.

Just buy the actual game cartridges. You won't have to put up with any technical problems, and you won't be stealing.
