I'm in a position where I have 2 jobs I could concievably work at but can only pick 1 but each have pros and cons and I"m not sure which one to continue with.

First off, I work at Blockbuster. I don't get paid all that much but it works with my school schedule, is only about 15 minutes away, I get free movie rentals, it's small so it's easier to manage, and a few other perks. It's a college job but not one I'd be able to live on (I still live w/ the parents). I make 7.75 an hour.

Last night, I was told that I was gonna be promoted to an acting manager, for emergencies and such. Basically, if someone's going on vacation or whatever, I can step in and run a shift. I get a raise to 8.25 an hour and would be next in line for the "real" manager's jobs. Having a manager credit on my resume is never a bad thing to have.

But I applied and got a call back from Best Buy today. Presumably, my starting pay'd be 9.50 or so an hour but it's a bit further away. I'd be a cashier most likely and would be doing what I'm doing now but wouldn't have the manager credit on my resume. Getting the manager position there'd be a lot tougher. But I'd be getting paid more.

So here's the thing: Stay where I am, get the slight increase, have a manager credit on my resume, and not have to drive that far, or go for the higher paying but further away job that lacks a manager title? I've worked at a lot of places but none with a manager title, so I'm conflicted. Thoughts?

Blockbuster FTW

save you gas money .. more perks... chicks dig managers :oldrazz:

In the long run, the manager position may be better to have. Especially at the college level where building up your resume where any kind of leadership looks good.

How much father away is the Best Buy. Because, with gas prices as high as they are, the extra commute could eat into your new pay (even if only a little).

Unless you're really hard up for cash (what college student isn't?), it might be better to stick it out in the place you're more familiar with and have a better chance of moving up. Unless you don't like working there anymore.

My sister's best friend works at our local Best Buy, and I don't think she likes it. I'll ask for more details later. Personally, I couldn't take the constant noise. Best Buys are always so loud.

Employers place a lot of merit on loyalty...flip flopping from job to job, regardless of the reason isn't looked highly on.

Besides, the extra $1.25 would get washed away by the extra gas.

In my cash strapped times, it can definitely make a difference

but you save that much on movie rental at blockbuster, and even not as a manager is much less embarrassing to say you work a blockbuster.

Its easier to be a manager in a small store like Blockbuster than be a peon in a larger store like Best Buy. Plus it gets ridiculous around the holidays there...I'd imagine it would be a severe headache.

I'd stay at Blockbuster.

Start charging your friends half price for free rentals and pocket the cash. ;)

One of my friends worked at best buy, and he left after a few weeks. He is one of the hardest working guys I know, and he said that they treated him like crap. I dont know if it was the employees themselves, or managment. Ill ask and let you know!

From the facts given I'd say stick with Blockbuster

you have to work it out money wise, yes you will get a slight pay raise, but when you factor in time, petrol(gas) and college is it really worth it.

How much further are we talking?

Also, it's not like you are looking for a career in retail are you?

So if it's not that further, I'd say take the Best Buy job.

Best Buy's only about 5-10 more miles away, which isn't that big a deal but it'd mean having to battle highway traffic and other paths which would eat up the gas. With Blockbuster, I basically just follow a few streets and 3 miles later, I'm at work

3 miles? Heck, start biking to work (if it's not dangerous). You'd probably save enough on gas to make up for the pay difference at Blockbuster.

I guess 5-10 miles in the Bay Area could be a lot than in the suburbs.

But honestly? Getting a whole $0.50 more from being a regular employee to acting manager just doesn't seem like that much.

Like you said, it's manager experience but how benefitial is that towards your college major expecially if you are going to be an Engineer or a Teacher etc. ?

I have these really dark blue socks that look practically black and some black socks.
The dark blue socks aren't really black, but they're more silky-smooth and comfortable than the black socks.
BUT, they always fall down.

The black socks are a little coarse, but if anyone at work DOES happen to see my ankles, they'll see full on BLACK, plus, the black ones go up higher so I only have to pull 'em up once day, IF that.

Both styles of sock have pros and cons, but I can't wear two pairs of socks to work, so, I'm wondering which socks I should wear tomorrow.

There's a building issues meeting tomorrow if that's a factor.

Do you like your job now? Do you like the people you work with. Personally, I don't like being the new guy on the job. I would like the seniority of being an acting manager. I don't like long drives either. And it's just a job nor a career. I'd say stay with blockbuster.

The position I'd get is basically a pre manager manager job. The official manager role, a shift lead, gets about 9.50 an hour so I"d be getting another pay raise when the next slot opens up, and a new one is opening up in a few months IIRC, so it wouldn't end at 8.25 if I heard right

Then stay at Blockbuster. You've got more money coming your way, along with a resume' boosting management position and longevity during college which shows prospective employers that you aren't flighty and flakey. If the shift lead ahead of you takes too long in leaving, have him run over in the parking lot so you can advance faster.
