Henry Golding in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Are they going to do what the MCU did and change the races of the characters? Because if they don't they would be truly void of black women. Based on what I have read, there's only one significant Black female GI Joe from the comics named Shooter and she sounds bad ass from what I have read about her

A Black male character named Doc was changed the past few years to a Black female character who is supposedly his niece. Apparently she was going to be included in that G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant movie that never happened?

You know, considering that this film is doing its own take on the character and his origin, if it’s fun and entertaining, perhaps maybe even good, I don’t mind if they change some things here or there for the majority of the film, so long as the status quo for the character as we know him is reached by the end in some form or fashion.

If the movie isn’t good, though, then I might have some words. :oldrazz:

I’ll be honest; I don’t care if he loses his voice or gets his face scarred up. That may be sacrilege to GI Joe fans, but neither of those things would be in the same realm of bad as Rise of Cobra. That movie was MK Annihilation bad. And Retaliation, while better, was still a weak movie that did little to reinvigorate a franchise that’s been on life support since the early Nineties. So if this movie capitalizes on Henry’s good looks and charisma to the point where it gets people interested in GI Joe again, I’m all for it.

I know that having Snake Eyes remove his mask and speak will anger some fans but I think it’s really hard to center a movie on a silent, fully masked character. It works with something like Michael Myers because he’s the villain and so the movie spends its time on the other characters. But if your hero and protagonist never shows his face or utters a word of dialogue, it’s going to be hard for the audience to connect with him. That kind of character might work well in a comic book or cartoon setting but I think that he would come off pretty vapid in live action.

Which comics are you referring? The 1980s era or later maybe?

It’s a long shot, but I wonder if anyone will think this is a remake of this late- 90s Nic Cage turd. :funny:

I love the Snake-Eyes character, specifically because how cool he was in the 80's GI Joe comics.

He was the best character in 2 very bad and meh films.

But this looks like in-name-only lame studio garbage.

I knew it when they cast an asian guy to play him, instead a Scott Eastwood type (like he was in the origin in the comics). Because they don't have the courage to feature a disabled vet character finding love and getting revenge for Hard Master.

So they do this misplaced "we'll race swap him to an asian character" to somehow make it more palatable to audiences?

I hate pointing this out, but not expecting the trailer to make me feel better.

Unless Golding is actually Mute, and wearing a fake face as a mask when he's unmasked.

When the last two films came out, I viewed them as if it was a kid playing with the toys. The first one, he’s younger and it’s goofy and whatnot and then the second one, he’s a little bit older and it’s a little bit more serious.

Initial thoughts;
  • 1 minute trailer?
  • "Every warrior has a beginning" Bleh
  • I can't see ish
  • Looks like we're going full on Sly Judge Dredd with the mask here
  • It looks colorful enough

Trailer really needed to be longer than 1 minute...

Also not feeling Storm Shadows coat.

Trailer wasn't bad. Felt intense enough until the "I'm on a new level" vocals kicked in.

I kinda liked what I saw but... one minute? This thing needed to be longer. Also, it’s disappointing that Storm Shadow’s look isn’t all that different from his look in the other GI Joe movies.

Damn we waited all this time for a trailer and they could even give us something that was a minute long and this is supposed to be coming out in two months?

I just don't understand that logic from Paramount, but that aside I actually liked alot of what I saw, especially the action sequences, but this needed to be a much longer trailer.

Quick just rename it a new side project of the fast and furious would and no one will notice.

This is a teaser trailer you release 5-6 months out from release, not TWO MONTHS FROM RELEASE. I kind of feel cheated because we've waiting been months and months for this and that's all we get.

Wasn't much of a trailer. Nothing with Snake Eyes in his mask. In fact, from the looks of it, he will be spending most of the movie without a mask or costume.

Crappy rap music needle drop.

I mean the footage looked OK, but even as a longtime GI Joe fan, nothing about this looked must-see to me.

The movie looks like a total dud. And Snake Eyes without a mask now because its the origin story??? Eh. Also Henry Golding is not a huge draw. Something that shows Snake Eyes' trademark look could draw more people.

They easily could have turned this into a G.I Joe 3 or a reboot with all the iconic G.I. Joe characters. But I guess Paramount is going to be Paramount. No one needs a G.I. Joe prequel solo movie after the last movie came out back in 2013. And that movie was hardly a big hit.

This looks super generic and on the cheap and very much in that "FastFurious" knock off genre of action films for sure.

As to the bolded...

Dude... It's the year 2021. This feels like spitting in the wind at this point when people act like rap is this totally foreign to the culture thing that JUST got sprung on us or something.

If you heard the Sugar Hill Gang in your preteen days for the first time chances are your kids are starting to have kids of their own. It's like... Hip Hop is a thing in the culture. It's not going anywhere. It just sounds so silly and... Old to be offended by it's existence or something.
