Henry Golding in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Judging by the early BO numbers I really doubt they continue this story in any way, especially with the mostly negative reactions its been getting so far.

Also, just because its based on a toyline doesn't mean this couldn't have been a really good film considering how many quality superhero movies we get nowadays.

There are no more excuses IMO for these sub par G.I. Joe flicks, but it seems like Paramount just doesn't care all that much about this brand anymore which is probably why another studio should buy it from them.

If this is the future of the franchise than I see no real potenital for it as far as theatrical prospects go , but maybe there's still hope in somekind of streaming series if its atleast good.

I mean ifDisney Plus can give us great stuff like The Mandalorian and those Disney Plus shows than I see no reason as to why it can't be done with G.I. Joe.

Heck, if they managed to make a good and successful movie based on board games(Jumanji) then could easily make a decent movie out of toy IP like Joe. In the end, it’s possible to make a good or generally well-liked movie out of anything be it a videogame, board game, or trading card game. All it takes is effort and the right creative team. GI Joe is kind of the Hasbro equivalent to the Howling Commandos from Marvel. It ain’t anywhere near as hard as rocket science to figure out how to make a good movie out of this. Mortal Kombat didn’t suck because the property can’t work on the big screen it sucked because the people in charge of handling the property didn’t understand how to adapt it to the silver screen properly. Joe is the same case.

I do think tv is where it’s at with this franchise. I’d much rather see another animated tv series than another live-action movie.

Wow, I don’t get all the hate for the movie? It’s a movie based on a toy line for God’s sake. It’s not gonna win any awards but it is the best GI Joe movie by a long shot, imo. Yeah, I know that’s not saying a whole helluva lot. It was entertaining and worth the price of admission.
Golding was OK, I really liked Koji’s StormShadow. Hope they make another and continue the story.

For a movie based on a toyline, it wasn't very fun or exciting to watch. I couldn't even see the action scenes.

Snake Eyes gets a B- cinemascore.

Pretty low score for a feel good blockbuster like this.

Yeah, but that is one of the things that helped out Jumanji. It was based on a game which was created to serve the story that they wanted to tell.

Didn’t they try a new animated series a couple of years ago? More like the A-Team or something. Don’t think it lasted more than a season.

Well, it's better than a C- D or F.
That’s still pretty bad and indicates the audience generally isn’t too enthusiastic about this movie. It’s not going to do well opening weekend, and it’s certainly going to fail in repeat viewings.

CinemaScore grades are garbage and the grading scale is faulty.
I don’t put much stock in them myself. However, I do think it’s saying something that even for how generous a scoring average Cinemascore gives bad movies like Bay’s Transformers(which gets an A on average) this barley got a B - which I think signifies audiences aren’t hot on this movie.

OK but a B- grade shouldn't be a bad grade. This is my point. It's not great, no but it shouldn't be that bad overall.

Yes it was called Renegades and it was on the Hub a new channel at the time ( which I think is called Discovery Kids now ). If I remember correctly th channel wasn't in very many hoes at the time.

With three failed attempts at films, a television series on Paramount + is probably the best way to go. And it could be done well. Get someone passionate about the property and go for it. I'd give it a watch if it's good. GI Joe was before my time, but I liked some of the toys and even as a casual observer, the mythology Hama created was all very interesting and iconic enough where even someone like me knew who was who.

I havent seen this yet but every review I've watched/read is talking about how incoherent the action is shot and the quick editing and chaotic shaky cam. I thought we were PAST this, Hollywood?! With Mortal Kombat and now this... is it that hard to find and hire fight choreographers and cinematographers who can shoot and film in-camera action like The Raid, Daredevil, John Wick, the Bourne movies, the Matrix movies etc? Especially when you have professional martial artists in your movie that can actually fight and perform the moves. I dont get it.

Yes, in the American grading system it’s not that bad a grade but when I say it’s a bad grade in this context, I really mean in terms of as a gauge of audiences overall enthusiasm for the film. A B- grade pretty means the movie isn’t a genuinely liked film even amongst audiences. This movie is definitely going to drop like a rock next weekend.

Hopefully this bombing will spell the end of Paramount’s relationship with hack producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

LOL, no big surprise.

And yeah, I agree that GI Joe COULD have made a good movie or TV series. It’s essentially just The Avengers or the Justice League only with no superpowers. But you need people who understand the property and also understand filmmaking.

I also think a Snake Eyes movie was doomed from the start. I know he’s a fan favorite character but even if this movie had followed his origin to a T and was really well made, I still think it would have struggled to find an audience. GI Joe is a property most people know and remember. But even though Snake Eyes is probably the most popular character, he’s not like a Wolverine or a Captain America in that people were clamoring for him to get his own film. I don’t think any of the Joes are. I think GI Joe is a team movie or nothing.

Well Lady Jaye is supposed to be getting an Amazon Prime TV series. We'll see how that goes.

Oh yeah I forgot about that. I wonder if this movie flopping will cause them to rethink that project.

It's possible. Lest we not forget that the Dark Tower movie flopping killed all the TV plans they had for that show. All the attempts to get it off the ground since have also failed. The movie was really a poison pill to that franchise.

I guess it depends on how far along Lady Jaye is.

Crazy to think how 10 years ago there were like Marvel-esque ambition plans for the Dark Tower series where they wanted multiple films TV miniseries and spinoffs that would share actors and things. And this was before Avengers even came out!

Maybe a Gi Joe VS Transformers movie could salvage it?

A competent director could have made a BEAST of a movie with a silent protagonist.

Subtle movements and gestures from someone who can direct the Snake Eyes character would have been great too.

Basically "Logan" meets "GI Joe"

That's what DJ Caruso wanted to do for GI Joe 3, but Paramount said no. The problem is while a crossover like that sounds fun and cool for us, now we have GI Joe being a lukewarm movie a number of times. So why are Hasbro and Paramount going to cross over their more lucrative live action film IP with another franchise that hasn't done as well? Especially one that just bombed.
