Henry Golding in Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins

Skip it. Don't give them your money. Hollywood needs to learn that movies are not mandatory, that you do NOT f**k with the source material, and that when you get woke you go broke.

They hired an Asian comedic actor who doesn't do martial arts to play a character who is a master ninja and was originally written as a white guy.

1) The writer who originally created Snake Eyes' back story is a Japanese American comic book writer, so making the character white is not "Cultural Appropriation".

2) They clearly chose a comedic actor because they want Snake Eyes to make witty one liners. If you want to make a Deadpool movie, then make a Deadpool movie. Don't try to turn Snake Eyes into Deadpool.

3) Snake Eyes being white is integral to his backstory. It is the very foundation for his conflict with Storm Shadow. Take that away, and you take away Storm Shadow's entire reason for wanting Snake Eyes dead. The story is a classic for a reason. It was used in Enter The Ninja, The Octagon, and The Master TV series. Taking that away from Snake Eyes' back story doesn't strengthen the character, it weakens him.

F**k Hollywoke. F**k these film makers. F**k this movie. I'm boycotting it and I highly recommend everyone who reads this do likewise.

'Warrior's star isn't the next Bruce Lee, he's the first Andrew Koji

In late 2019, Koji landed his first major movie role in 2021’s Snake Eyes, a franchise prequel starring Henry Golding. Koji plays Golding’s rival and brother “Storm Shadow,” a white-clad ninja assassin for Cobra Command.

The movie is due in theaters next October, although the pandemic continues to push back movie release dates across the board. While Koji is tight-lipped about details, he teases Snake Eyes as “something different” than previous G.I. Joe movies.

“I didn’t vibe with the first films,” he says. “I liked the actors. But I didn’t vibe. I remember when I saw G.I. Joe like ten years ago. I saw Storm Shadow and I thought, really? Is that our place, Asians in western screens? We take our tops off and say exposition? I don’t want that. With this, we tried to make a real, grounded [story]. We obey the laws of G.I. Joe. But I hope this is the most interesting, layered Storm Shadow we’ve seen.”

So that figure wasn't based on the movie. It was just ThreeZero's officially licensed sixth scale GI Joe line.

That looks damn good

Too bad that the guy in the suit is going to look like this.

Looks just like him. Can't you tell?

They hired an Asian comedian who doesn't know a karate chop from a pork chop to play a blonde haired blue eyed white ninja. :barf:

I'll pass.

This is actually some pretty good casting.

Too bad the whole dynamic of his feud with Snake Eyes is going to be completely f**ked.

I know that this crappy movie is going to happen with its crappy casting. Doesn't mean I can't use any method I can to make sure that it's a total flop.

Let's look at Snake Eyes' original backstory (from what I can remember, I might have to embellish a bit)

Snake Eyes was a special forces soldier (for sale of argument, let's say that he was a Navy SEAL). He and his team were sent to Asia on a black ops mission (for arguments sake let's say it was North Korea). After they successfully completed their mission, Snake Eyes and his team make it back to their boat. Somehow, either the enemy struck back or there was a mechanical problem with the boat, there was an explosion which severely injured Snake Eyes and threw him from the boat and into The Sea of Japan. Snake Eyes is missing and presumed dead. He is pulled out of the ocean by a Japanese fisherman, barely alive. The fisherman brings him home and dresses his wounds. Snake Eyes is bed ridden for months, being nursed back to health by the fisherman and his family. Once he was well enough, the fisherman begins training Snake Eyes in ninjitsu to rebuild his strength. Snake Eyes picked up the ninja arts quickly, and once he regained his strength he chose to stay and continue his ninja training. His face scarred and his vocal chords permanently damaged, Snake Eyes chooses to keep his face covered and learns to communicate through sign language. Soon Snake Eyes is a fully trained ninja. Storm Shadow, the son of the ninja fisherman who pulled Snake Eyes from the sea, is furious with his father for teaching their secrets to a foreigner. After Snake Eyes decided to leave and return to the United States, where he is recruited by G.I. Joe, Storm Shadow leaves to kill him and is recruited by Cobra.

Now let's compare that story with what Hollywoke is pushing on us.

Snake Eyes grows up as a Japanese ninja because ONLY Japanese people can become ninja. And Storm Shadow hates him because the script says so. Wow. That is f**king riveting. Can't f**king wait. (Sarcasm)

You seem to be really looking forward to this, what excites you about the project most?

Not to “Well, actually” you, but Henry Golding is actually half Malaysian and half British, so, no, not Japanese. They can still go the foreigner angle in a different way. It doesn’t need to be beholden to every single element of the original story.

Also, the trope of the white main character being trained by a ninja clan and quickly catching on to become one of the best ninja ever in the world is not only overused in fiction, it’s pretty culturally insensitive (call me “Hollywoke” if you want, I don’t care). Having a white guy learn what takes an entire lifetime of training in such a short amount of time is so ****ing dumb that people rightfully criticized the Arrow tv series for doing the same thing.

If being culturally sensitive to outdated, culturally insensitive filmic/literary tropes and wanting to update them for modern times is “Hollywoke”, then they’re more than welcome.

Wow. It’s almost as if actors can be trained in martial arts! Who woulda thunk it?!

Because we're in a pandemic and they don't know when they'll be able to release the movie yet.

Until we're out of this pandemic Loden Greatstorm, that's just a placeholder release date for now. Release dates change.
Yes. It changed from October 2020 to October 2021. I know what you are trying to say but I don't think we will have another WW84 situation on our hands.

An actual possibility of a first look... I hope.
