Kinda similar.

Well, official confirmation that Snake Eyes won't become mute in this film:

Snake Eyes Trailer Breakdown With Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura – Exclusive

This pretty much sinks it for me all the way. An origin story without the origin. Pretty much the same dumb decision as in the new MK film (no tournament featured).

"But yeah folks, tune in for the next one as we will have it there!"

What's happening to modern blockbuster films? Why does everything feel like a DLC and we no longer can have the full package? Cheap cash grab gimmicks so they can make more money from the inevitable sequels.

Not really surprised, but this is sort of what Hollywood does oftentimes when they adapt beloved properties. They think they know better and change the things about the original property that make it interesting.

UGGGHHHHHHHH. I'm still going to give this a watch at some point. But I fear that my earlier comments in this thread may have been accurate where I said "So... this film could have basically been another generic Scott Adkins Ninja film"

How many movies have said “We will address it in the next one!” only for the movie to bomb? Mortal Kombat is the most recent one to mind.

I re-watched GI Joe Rise of Cobra and Retaliation over the past couple of nights.

While I previously said the only saving graces of those films were the Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow scenes and story; I have to say I found them more entertaining than I remember them being. Also, in one of those rare situations where "the sequel was better" I found that to be the case with Retaliation.

New Shang Chi trailer came out and they also used a rap song over the action beats. I like rap but this template for trailers has to stop. That being said, that movie looks much better than this one, which I know isn’t a fair comparison since the budget is bigger and Marvel knows what it’s doing.

Shang Chi basically repurposed the Black Panther trailer which was smart since that was probably the best template of incorporating hip hop into an action movie trailer. The Snake Eyes trailer lacked the same punch.

One of those films I have to see but deep down know its probably not going to be all that great going in even though your routing for it to break the trend but there isnt much to hang to here.

Kind of unrelated...
I run a mental health non-profit for the geek community called Geek Wellness Education...and on July 25th we're hosting a veterans only event in my hometown (Richmond, VA) called A Real American Hero Mental Health Day. We'll have GI Joe cosplayers there to greet people, and an exclusive video interview with Larry Hama about GI Joe and the Snake Eyes film. And, then we'll have experts in various paths of veteran/PTSD specific mental health speak and give demonstrations of what they do. So, I'm pretty stoked for opening weekend!

Paramount should take hack producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and fire him into the sun. How many franchises are they going to allow this idiot to ruin? Larry Hama’s origin for Snake Eyes was done perfectly in the comics so of course let’s change everything that made it so special. Lorenzo is already on record admitting that he hates Cobra and thinks the franchise is stupid. These are the people Paramount has in charge of this property.

At this point the only interesting thing about this project is how low the box office will be i mean they alienated the core fan base so whos left that will support this ope ing weekend?

I am an above average casual fan of GI Joe as a whole, but I love Snake Eyes. I love the whole thing of badass tactical ninjas etc. But I am just flabbergasted at the choices they have made for this film.

I'm not really against him being played by an Asian man. But not being a mute? Revealing his face? I don't know...

Maybe an origin movie wasn't the best way to go about it. Perhaps they should have just made it a solo spinoff set during the early days of his career? With some flashbacks and exposition on his origins. Or hell leave it a mystery. That's half of the character's allure, mystery. Keep the normie general audience guessing with Snake Eyes.

At the very least they got the outfit right.

Revealing his face isn't a big deal, but if it's an origin story, and we're supposed to get to Snake Eyes' injury and scarring...like...we should see that stuff happen.
