Fox Gives 13-Episode Series Order To Ancient Egypt Drama ‘Hieroglyph’ From Travis Beacham & Chernin Entertainment
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

A day after six-year-old pilot Babylon Fields came back to life with a pilot order at NBC, another old drama project is making a comeback. During the 2011-12 development season, Travis Beacham’s fantastical action-adventure spec Hieroglyph narrowly missed the cut for a pilot order at Fox. Two years later, it did one better — landing a straight-to-series 13-episode order.

Produced by 20th Century Fox TV and Chernin Entertainment, Hieroglyph, which is eyed for next season, is set in ancient Egypt, where fantasy and reality intertwined. It follows a notorious thief who is plucked from prison to serve the Pharoah, navigating palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and even a few divine sorcerers. Executive producing the project are Beacham, Peter Chernin, Katherine Pope and Miguel Sapochnik (Fringe), who will direct the premiere episode. Filming is scheduled to begin in early 2014. “We wanted to do a show about deceit, sex, intrigue in the court and fantastical goings-on – no better place to set that than ancient Egypt,” said Fox Entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly. “Travis Beacham has an inventive mind, and he has wrapped this all together in this intoxicating new drama.”

Hieroglyph originally landed at Fox in January 2012 as part of that season’s spec market. It was one of four candidates for the network’s final drama pilot slot that season, competing against the internally developed Silvio Horta Latino family dramedy, a medical drama from Josh Berman & Rob Wright; and a Wyatt Earp Western by John Hlavin. The network ultimately went with the Berman/Wright project, which became the short lived series Mob Doctor. Fox then briefly considered Hieroglyph for an off-cycle pilot order before the project underwent further development last season, leading to the idea for a straight-to-series pickup, which started to gain traction over the summer. The pickup brings Chernin Entertainment’s series on Fox to two, joining comedy New Girl. For the first time since the company’s first development season, it has less than 3 series on Fox this fall, a threshold that reportedly triggers seven-figure penalties, rumored to be as much as $3 million for each of the three Fox series slots it has vacant, per Chernin’s super lucrative exit deal from News Corp.

Based on his story idea, Beacham, repped by WME and Anonymous Content, co-wrote the screenplay with director Guillermo Del Toro for Pacific Rim. He also co-wrote Clash of the Titans and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo and is currently writing a Pacific Rim sequel for Legendary.
Intriguing.

I wonder who will be cast. Are they going to go with people like Oded Fehr? Or will they whiten the whole cast?

A mix I imagine. Some white actors in there, but not so many that the show gets completely leveled for it.

I hope that is the route that they go.

Fox has done a fantastic job at casting for Sleepy Hollow and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

I bet that it'll be a great series and Fox will cancel it after the first season.

This sounds fascinating. I hope Fox doesn't screw it up. I'm excited to see who will play Pharaoh.

I have always wanted a show based on Ancient Egypt so I hope this is good.

They had me at ancient Egypt. Good on Fox for going with an ethnically diverse casting.

Sounds promising, just need the thief to be cast now.

Reece Ritchie.

Oh, how embarrassing, I thought he wast as the thief. :O Yeah, I'm curious to see who will play the lead, as well. It's odd that he hasn't been the first person cast.

I love that Fox ditched pilot season and is going with full season orders! And this sounds interesting!

‘Being Human’ Alum Anna Fricke to Run Fox’s ‘Hieroglyph’

Anna Fricke has signed on to the Fox drama “Hieroglyph” as exec producer and showrunner as part of a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.

“Hieroglyph,” set in ancient Egypt, earned a 13-episode straight-to-series order from Fox last October. The adventure drama about a thief plucked from prison to serve the Pharaoh was created by scribe Travis Beacham.

“Hieroglyph” is an ambitious high-priority for 20th, which took its time finding a showrunner to aid Beacham in executing the show. It’s expected to lense in Los Angeles and Albuquerque, N.M.

“Anna’s a spectacular writer and showrunner who can literally do it all – from big genre shows like ‘Being Human’ to more intimate character pieces like ‘Men in Trees’—and we are thrilled to be in business with her exclusively,” said 20th TV chairman-CEO Gary Newman. “The combination of Travis Beacham’s very unique vision for this show with Anna’s wealth of experience makes for about as great a creative pairing as you could imagine. And we eagerly look forward to developing with Anna down the road.”

Fricke is coming off a five-season run as showrunner of Syfy’s “Being Human.” Her previous credits include WB Network’s “Everwood” and ABC’s “Men in Trees.”

Fricke is repped by UTA and attorney Patti Felker.

I don't know what it is about full cast photos for new TV series, but they almost never look well put-together.

This is going to be great! I loved Pacific Rim (which Travis Beacham wrote the screenplay for) and I love Ancient Egypt, so I'm really looking forward to this. Hopefully it does well on Fox.
