high school freshman arrested after taking homemade clock to school

Given the way posters here react to the barest of slights, many of whom are in this very thread, the thought that any of them would NOT be seeking similar damages in a lawsuit is pretty hypocritical to me. Have this happen to your kid and suddenly it would be a different tune I am sure. The jacked up conspiracy mind set here is pretty sad.

Hey, I said I would try it. But I wouldn't blame you for calling me opportunistic.

I've had a lot worse happen to me and never walked away with 15 million dollars.

It's one thing when people are genuinely discriminated against. Its another when people actually seek out getting discriminated just to get a reaction and/or to sue.

This idiot kid and his parents did the latter.

indeed. so the next time someone does get discriminated against, everybody's gonna think it's just another stunt.

You've had worse happen to you than being wrongly arrested for schoolwork after falsely being accused of making a bomb as a terrorist threat based on racism?

Bull****.

I don't see what the issue is? The family should have sued from jump street. Their kid was labeled a terrorist, arrested and hauled off to jail and questioned without their knowledge.

The school should be punished for a moment that kids gonna remember for the rest of his life. Only in America is the kid made out to be a bad person.

MURICA!

the conspiracy is that this was all a publicity stunt planned to boost the father's popularity to run for president of sudan (again) and that the boy doesn't have any talent and didn't actually "build" a clock plus the fact that his sister was known for being a troublemaker in the past.

The kid actually posed with the current Sudanese president who is accused of genocide and other human rights violations. His father is a 9/11 truther with political ties to Qatar and Sudan, two places I wouldn't call pleasant.

The whole situation is incredibly shady.

I think because if it's a human rights issue, you'd be more concerned about getting the truth of the matter out there moreso than money.

Well there is justice, and then there's this. Justice is 100,000-200,000 dollars and a formal apology.

This is blatantly trying to abuse the circumstances. Because nobody in their right mind would ask for $15m if this wasn't such a public story. But all the people that were in this kid's corner from out the blocks will get behind him now and say "Good on you, kid, get your $15m".

Also, let's be frank about this, because Islam and a Muslim teenager are part of the narrative this is getting far more press. If this was another minority being stereotyped it wouldn't be getting nearly as much air time as it is. It's such a hot public topic that all eyes will be on it for some time to come, and the family are trying to milk their fifteen minutes while they can.

$15m though, really?

For a moment that kid's going to remember for the rest of his life, like it's the worst thing that's ever going to happen to him? Jesus that's dramatic. I'm assuming it'll be slightly mitigated by the fact that millions of faceless tweeters and tumblrs assembled behind him in a legion of support, he got to meet the president of the United States and was offered employment by a massive company.

There are people that go through far worse incidents at customs at airports that have gotten zero press and though being mistreated worse than this kid was have probably gotten absolutely nothing for their ordeals. How many other Muslim Americans have been treated even worse but weren't fortunate enough to have such a juicy story made of it? The way everyone rallies around things that get the most airtime is pathetic.

As Thunder said, a formal and very public apology along with some damages, below $1m seem proportionate for what happened.

The clock kid father ran for President in Sudan ? Did I read that right ? Aren't this family American ? How can the father run for Pres in another country ?

You know controversy aside, that would one helluva cool super villain name.

The Clock Kid.

There are a few factors that make me suspicious of this story.

There's the whole thing about how he really didn't create anything. He just took apart a clock's casing, and put the stuff in it suitcase-like pencil box.

His sister had been suspended for making a bomb threat before.

His father is a known conspiracy theorist and a media savvy political figure back home.

Them suddenly moving to Qatar didn't help. And now what essentially amounts to extortion.

Best case scenario, the kid really was just a victim of Texan xenophobia and school bureaucratic incompetence, but his dad realized there was money to be made. Worst case scenario, it was all an elaborate hoax to get some media attention and cash.

If you do something blatant just to goad racist people into something you're kinda no better.

I think its just a matter of his father seeing a chance for some money and taking it. This is the American Dream, pretty much.

also, let's remember, the "clock" had to be plugged in in order to function and count down.

so, the kid deliberately had the clock out and plugged in during class for it to go off. despite being told by other teachers earlier to put the clock away and not show it off lest people get the wrong idea.

so, the clock wasn't in his backpack and it "accidentally" went off which got the teacher's attention. the kid deliberately plugged it in - iow, he wanted it to go off and draw attention.

You obviously haven't been following the story, or chose to ignore it and just looking at the "racist" part of it. :whatever:
