Summit Entertainment has announced that Justin Lin will direct a re-imagination (ie reboot) of Highlander. Of course, Summit hopes that this reboot with “spur a new franchise for the studio.”
Lin made his name with the awesome High School-based indie crime drama Better Luck Tomorrow in 2002 (if you haven’t seen it, add it to your netflix queue), but has since turned out mostly generic Hollywood crap like Annapolis, Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious. The good news is that Iron Man screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway are working on the new take, which will expand on Highlander’s original core mythology of immortals battling amongst us, hunting each other through the ages by tapping its newly minted creative team to take its re-imagination to new heights.

SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT HARNESSES FILMMAKING TEAM BEHIND FAST & FURIOUS FOR THE STUDIO’S RE-IMAGINATION OF HIGHLANDER
Acclaimed Action Director Justin Lin and Producer Neal H. Moritz Join IRON MAN Screenwriters Marcum and Holloway, Original HIGHLANDER Producer Peter Davis on Board

Los Angeles, CA September 22, 2009 – Summit Entertainment announced today that it has tapped the filmmaking team behind this spring’s hit film FAST & FURIOUS – director Justin Lin and producer Neal H. Moritz – to direct and produce respectively the studio’s re-imagination of the cult film HIGHLANDER. Summit’s HIGHLANDER is being written by IRON MAN screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Peter Davis, long time producer of HIGHLANDER, will also produce the film. Summit acquired the rights to remake the cult classic from Davis - Panzer Productions, Inc. in May of 2008.

Summit’s film will expand on the original HIGHLANDER’s core mythology of immortals battling amongst us, hunting each other through the ages by tapping its newly minted creative team to take its re-imagination to new heights. Plans call for the re-imagination to spur a new franchise for the studio.
“We are privileged to have this amazing opportunity to reinvent one of the great franchises,” said Patrick Wachsberger, co-chairman of Summit Entertainment. “Neal and Justin have proven more than once that they can deliver an entertaining and exciting blockbuster.”
Added Peter Davis of Davis-Panzer Productions, “Justin and Neal are an exciting directing/producing team and I am confident that they will deliver a truly dynamic film while being totally respectful of HIGHLANDER Legend.”
In HIGHLANDER, after centuries of dueling to survive against others like him, Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman must confront the last of his kind, a murderously brutal barbarian, who lusts for the fabled Prize.
Justin Lin most recently directed the hit action film FAST & FURIOUS, the fourth film of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise. He also directed THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT, and BETTER LUCK TOMORROW.
In addition to FAST & FURIOUS, Neal Moritz and his Original Film banner have produced a myriad of action films including the upcoming FLASH GORDON and THE GREEN HORNET as well as I AM LEGEND, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS, and I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER.
Lin and Moritz are represented by CAA.

I like Justin Lin. Better Luck Tomorrow was perfect, and Tokyo Drift was imo the best of the series. The writers are fine and I heard some cool things about the script like immortals cheating by shooting at each others to stun so they can get close to behead.

Only thing I'm worried about is Summet(as so far they've failed at everything). I don't want to see that Cam guy as Conner or even worse the Kurgen.

Bring back Roger Daltrey! :woot:

I love how the co-chairman of Summit calls Highlander "one of the great franchises." It would be if it didn't retcon itself so damn much. Seriously. If you want this to be the first of a franchise, make sure this movie says right off the bat that Connor and the Kurgan are not the last two immortals still alive, and that at the end of the movie, there's still more than one out there.

Well if its anything like the recent script then it will be. Tons of immortals fighting with the movie ending the same with the defeat of The Kurgen, but with a cliffhanger for the second movie.

Good. If they stick to that, they'll be alright. And at least we don't have to hear the words "Planet Zeist" again.

I know they'll at least use one Queen song from the soundtrack(Its really a must), I just prey they don't have some up-and coming boy band cover it.

So it's basically going to be the original Highlander with new actors? I dont know about that. I was hoping they'd opt for telling an all new story using Connor McLeod.

In the end, there should've been only one.

Agreed. Although, I honestly think if there's one series that DESERVES a reboot, it's Highlander. Hell, even if this is nothing more than the exact same film as the original but with today's special effects, I'd see it as long as it's just as good.

Btw, for those of you looking for the original on Blu-Ray, beware: it's out this month (if not already)... but as far as I know, it's only available a double film pack with the Blu-Ray version of the dreaded Highlander II: The Quickening.:csad:

I've never seen Highlander 2 but it does look good on blu ray. I've thought about watching it but probably shouldn't.

I thought Highlander was great . I suppose it's a guilty pleasure but it's one of my favorite films. I'd like to be optimistic and say that it could be done better though.

You know, i'm really looking forward to the remake of Higlander.

I loved the first one, but everything after was average to ****.

Now, whilst i loved the first one, we never got to understand who the immortals are. What is their purpose? Is it a game of the gods? If the remakes can touch on this, the myth and unravel this over a couple of films, you got your self a winner, if done right.

And when it comes to the prize, really expand that. And the quickening? Yes, it passes on the knowledge, but again, really give that more weight.

God, what i'd give to be given creative licence over that franchise. It's be epic lol.

BTW, the explanation for the immortals in Highlander 2 is REDICULOUS.

I actually liked the t.v. series better.

There were aspects of both I really enjoyed, but the tv show was what really made me a fan of Highlander. Although, even with that said, I still found the episodes extremely repetitive and predictable, because of the show's premise. I'm not exactly certain what they could have done about it though.

This is my tattoo on the inside of my left wrist.

To say I like Highlander is an understatement. I remember being little and watching the first movie with my Dad when it was on TV. Then when the TV series came on me and my Dad would watch it every Sunday night. Then when it came to DVD me and him rewatched it from the beginning.

So I am looking forward to and at the same time not this remake. It could be something very awesome, which I hope it is. My biggest apprehension is that you really can't top Sean Connery, Clancy Brown, and Christoper Lambert. They are part of what made those characters what they where.

I'll be there on opening day regardless. I've been there for every other Highlander movie and enjoyed them for what they where. I just hope that this at least keeps the spirit of the movies and the series.

I just feel like if they reboot Highlander, it'll bomb.

It's the perfect role for Gerard Butler. He doesn't need to get back to 300 shape or anything, but just so long as he doesn't have a the lil' stomach pooch he gets when he's not doing a movie. He'll take to the sword fighting will given his training on 300, and he doesn't have to hide his accent (which he's horrible at doing!)!! Cast Tony Curren as Kurgen, Gabriel Gael Bernal as Ramirez, and let's shoot this mother!!!

They need to keep the Queen songs. It won't be Highlander without them.

Well, at least the first minute and a half...the rest sounds dated LOL.
