His Dark Materials

I bet McAvoy and his ex-wife Duff don't share any scenes together.

I am curious how they are adapting it now. One book a season?

Hopefully this means they're confident with what they've seen so far.

Agree with all of this, was so excited for the film series, the first was okay, but nothing special and a disappointment really, but I would have liked to see the movies continue as the cast were perfect. Double agreed about DBR being a perfect Lyra and growing up to hot :woot:.

I am excited to see a TV show but was hoping HBO would pick it up, I just don't think the BBC has the budget to do the story justice. I mean how will they do Iorek and the other armoured bears? Then there are the witches, Angels and many other strange creatures to consider.

Well, it looks like HBO will have some involvement, however, in a distribution capacity.

HBO Partners with BBC on His Dark Materials TV Series

I've never read these books but I thought the movie was awful and some of the points it was trying to make didn't get across at all. The whole concept of what "dust" is (sin) wasn't even remotely clear. And there were so many scenes that tried to be all epic and whatnot that were pathetic. I remember the pirate captain guy attempting to give this big, inspiring speech and just laughing at it. Hopefully this TV series will fare better.

This could prove a costly mistake by the BBC. The series has taken forever to even leave the development stage and enter pre-production, never mind production. I wouldn't be shocked if there's been behind-the-scenes production issues which have caused the delay, and if so that could leave an impact on the final product which results in low viewing figures.

The BBC are really taking a gamble here.

Yeah, the movie didn't do the books justice by a long shot. It had some beautiful visuals, but other than that it's not memorable in any way. New Line were trying to make it their next Lord of the Rings but they clearly didn't learn from the success of those films and how that success ties in with how well they ultimately respected their source material. It's a shame really, because Dakota Blue Richards made a great Lyra, but the rest of the major characters were definitely miscast.

Eh, the BBC will be okay. They'll just up the licence fee. :cwink:

Yep. I remember they even had a trailer where they had the One Ring turn into the Golden Compass and touted it as the “next big adventure” or something. Such a misfire, though I agree, the lead actress was good. Too bad no one else was.

I am not feeling McAvoy as Asriel, tbh.
Asriel is, for all intents and purposes, an aristocratic a*hole.

This and War of the Worlds make BBC for me, unmissable this Autumn/Winter.

Oh damn, I didn’t realize this project was so close. Hell, I didn’t even hear who was in the cast. I loved these books so I am very interested to see a long-form adaptation because that movie was no bueno.

Why does this look so cheap?

The 2007 version might’ve not been very good, but visually it was at least a match for the book series.

I guess that’s the problem with TV that is not HBO or Netflix.

I'd prefer something that does justice to the story over flashy production values that butcher it, so if that's the trade off for moving it to TV, I'll be perfectly content with that.

Why does it have to be one over the other?

I think both are equally important for a series like this ala Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones is literally the most expensive show in television history. Most shows can't be Game of Thrones, not even other HBO shows, and that's a completely unrealistic standard to hold other productions to.

Don't be daft. I'm not talking literally Game of Thrones. There are many shows with lower budgets that can pull off great visuals. Even BBC's own Sherlock. What I'm saying is based on this teaser, they should be doing better with their visuals for a fantasy series.
