Directed by Steven Spielberg and released in 1991,
Hook stars some of my favorite big-time actors such as Robin Williams, Maggie Smith, Dustin Hoffman, and Julia Roberts.
I don't care how corny it sounds or how old I get,
Hook will always be one of my favorite films of ALL time. The basis of the film is that, ironically, Peter Pan has finally grown up, and essentially has to learn what it's like to be a child again while rescuing his children from Captain Hook.
The original work by J.M. Barrie,
Peter Pan and Wendy, later shortened to
Peter Pan, contained a fair amount of darker elements, which I felt translated over into the modern story of
Hook in the form of tragedy. Watching this movie is always slightly bittersweet for me, because I feel Wendy's pain knowing that she loved Peter when she was a young woman, but had to watch him fall in love with her granddaughter once she was an old woman. It's also rather heart-wrenching to see Tinkerbell, who is madly in love with Peter, never get to fulfill her wish of remaining with him forever. Her line, "You know that place between sleep and awake? That place where you still remember dreaming? That's where I'll always love you." is my favorite quote from the film
I love the fantastical sets used for this movie, as well. The costumes are fairy-like, and the Lost Boys' treehouse is amazing. One of the best scenes is the make-believe Neverfood dinner!
The Lost Boys themselves are absolutely charming. Pockets is adorable, Thud Butt is hilarious in little-kid humor style, and I'm pretty sure every little boy who watched the movie wanted to be Rufio (as a little girl, I had a major crush on him

).
Robin Williams is perfect for making the switch between serious and all-business adult Peter and the child-like, learning to have fun again Peter. And who could ask for a better Captain Hook than Dustin Hoffman?
Hands down, if you haven't seen this movie, go out and BUY it, right now. You can usually get the dvd for less than $10!
