(I did a search to see if such a thread existed and there was one but it was for both Horror and Crime comics. I want this one to be strictly about Horror comics).

These are probably my favorite comics to read and collect overall and I own quite a few of them. I've been buying the new Tales From The Crypt series and own some of the reprints of the older series from back in the eighties/early 90s, and I also own most of the Avatar and Wildstorm titles using Friday The 13th, A Nightmare On Elm Street and Halloween. Own the Halloween: Nightdance series from Devil's Due Publishing and have the first issue of The Death Of Laurie Strode but never got the second (I've heard rumors the series may be cancelled due to poor sales). I eagerly await the upcoming Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash sequel, I thoroughly enjoyed the first crossover.

I've been gone for the most part of ten years from the ol' comic scene, and I finally broke down and started a post in both the Marvel and DC boards. Mostly just to get a feel for what was really good and fresh and a good place to jump back into the genre again. Although my main goal was to get updated on the superhero angle, I had a real love of horror comics as well. I followed a lot of the '70's Marvel creature feature stuff like Werewolf by Night and Dracula, as well as the House of Mystery and Swamp Thing from DC.
Currently I picked up a few issues of Image's Walking Dead, (although I haven't read them yet...I picked up a bunch of stuff, so they are a-comin') but aside from that..didn't get a whole horror plug from most folks. (Although I did get really great advice on the superhero/cosmic stuff!)
Maybe you could point me in the right direction for my next trek to the comic shop. I would like some good horror/suspsense stuff, and they certainly don't have to be of the big '2'. What would you recommend?
(preferably an ongoing series so I can keep following things..)
thanks!

If you like Slasher Horror, some of the Avatar and Wildstorm Friday The 13th titles are an enjoyable read and I really enjoyed Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash.

I think I rememberd someone saying something about the Wildstorm stuff...

Care to expand a little bit on the Avatar?

Also, I was poking around on either the Image or the Dark Horse websites, and I saw some previews for the book Proof (I can't remember which company it was though, grrrr). It looked kinda interesting, but I was curious if anyone else could fill me in on the series...

Avatar's work from what I recall was more centered on the Action/Gore in contrast with Wildstorm who seem to focus more on the story aspect.

I recommend the 30 Days of Night books. Waaay better than the movie(and a lot more gory too).

Cool! I actually just saw the movie like..a week ago (or thereabouts). I thought it was ok..if the books are tons better then the film, I may check that out. Which company are they published by? Is it Dark Horse? That's what comes to mind for me...

^I'm pretty sure it's IDW. You can get the first book on amazon for a dollar.

Lol..somebody cue the Robocop quote "I'd buy THAT for a dollar" heh heh...

Is the 30 Days an ongoing series?

I'm not too familiar with 30 Days Of Night, never saw the film nor read the comics. But it sounds cool and like something worth checking out. I love beastly vampires, not a fan of the romantic type at all, which it sounds like 30DON strays far from.

I just picked up Garth Ennis' 'Crossed' which is similar in tone to 28 Days Later. It's also very graphic.

It's not ongoing, but a mini-series is released every year or so. The 9th or 10th mini came out back in fall '08.

Look for Strange Embrace by David Hine. AMAZING horror graphic novel, you will not regret it.

is Halloween Nightdance a good one?

i'm a big michael meyers fan.

Picked up the first issue of Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash: The Nightmare Warriors the other day and read it, not bad if a bit short. I hope the remaining five issues are good.

Bats And Hornets, Halloween: Nightdance wasn't bad, recommended if you're a big fan of Halloween/Michael Myers.

I ALMOST picked that up this weekend as well! I didn't because I was kind of on a mission to pick up some other non-marvel/dc stuff, and I totally forgot about that mini-series being out.
What I did get though was the lastest Conan The Cimmerian (not exactly horror I know), The Unwritten (# 2), and Proof (latest issue whichever number it is). After having these in tow, I saw the Jason/Freddie/Ash book, and thought I would keep my eyes peeled for a review of it here at the Hype.

I have no idea if Proof actually fits the 'horror' tag, but if it seems close I'll post my observations on it in this thread. Maybe next week or so...depending on school.

If you enjoyed the first FVJVA the sequel so far seems to be not too bad, but it's too early to tell. I will say that the first appearance of Jason in it is something to behold if you're a Jason fan.

I've dug a lot of Steve Niles' stuff.

Freaks of the Heartland, which I believe is being turned into a movie, was very Stephen King-esque. I definitely recommend it. And his Cal MacDonald character is very fun.

Here are some good ones IMO

1. Walking Dead

2. Tales From the Crypt

3. Hack/Slash

4. Savage

Totally agree about Walking Dead...very well written and developed IMHO.

Went ahead and ordered the new Creepy comic from Dark Horse this week, (online)..hope that it will live up to the old classic magazine!

..and thanks also to the last couple of posters, for their recomendations...slowly but surely, I'll be checking for those titles...

Richard Corbens recent horror work for marvel under the Haunt of Horror title was fantastic and they should do more. I think the trade is available now.

Indeed. I picked up the H.P. Lovecraft Haunt of Horror in it's monthly form. It was great. Still have to grab the HC. I'm having trouble finding his Poe Haunt of Horror stuff, though.

I suggest you go out and pick up his and Simon Revelstroke's adaptation of William Hope Hodgson's novel "House On The Borderland"...good stuff.

Also, anyone else check out Dark Horse's revamp of Creepy? Pretty cool stories, with an awesome cover by Eric Powell(The Goon).

While I await for my issue of Creepy to arrive, anybody know if this is going to be an ongoing/semi-ongoing venture? I think that would be pretty cool, and would go along with their big ol' hardcover collection stuff.

I think it might be quarterly. This issue says #2 is set to come out in October. So then issue 3 might be in January or February. Then April or May for #4.

I'd love to buy the HC stuff, but i never have the money for it.
