House of the Dragon House of the Dragon General Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

How are they milking anything when people claim they're already flying through book materials. So which is it, is they milking the show or are they flying through book material? Also the reduced episodes wasn't the decision of the showrunners.
They're not flying through book material. This season only covered about 20-something pages in the book in comparison to the first season, which covered about 80ish pages.

The whole song of ice and fire Aegon's dream thing I feelt was a bad inclusion since season 1. I don't know why they want to keep reminding people of how Game of Thrones fell apart in the end. Also the prophecy, dream, or whatever doesn't even come to pass in this generations lifetime. So it doesn't matter at all for this show. All these flashes of things just so a dagger can connect the two shows. We already know that the story and dagger aren't passed down to Danaerys. So this literally goes nowhere. Also, we have lots of dragon riders in this era, how about showing more of them flying around and training.

Personally, I'm very happy that they aren't letting the botched ending of Season 8 alter the approach to the world and its connecting themes. The prophecy had a huge impact on House Targaryen. They shouldn't bury it because 2D's bias against fantasy undermined the endgame.

I'm fine with them acknowledging it as long as they don't dwell on it too much. It can be mentioned here and there but I don't want it to become a big overarching thing for Daemon's storyline in particular. It doesn't even have to do with how season 8 ended as much as letting this show run its own course without having to be connected so closely to the events of GOT.

Also, who's ready for that big episode 9 battle tonight? It's like we're back in the GOT glory days!

They appear to be doing it to get a second chance at telling the story of Dany's fall from grace. Rhaenrya's darker moments are linked thematically (and even explicitly) to the prophecy. She's starting to use it to justify her wrongdoings. After her conversation with Allicent, she's perfectly positioned to have her own 'razing of kingslanding' type moment next season. Now, I've not read parts of the book that'll be covered in future seasons, but I can only imagine it won't turn out well once she realizes Aegon isn't there. This time it'll probably feel more natural and less rushed than with Dany in S8.

Maybe this time we'll realize to stop rooting for charismatic heroes, princes, and princesses that were promised. Though, seeing the continuing discourse on whether Jon or Dany should've been the chosen one doesn't give me a lot of hope.

House of the Dragon but if it was like The Office.

On the one hand, there has to be a course correction for season 3 from both the writers and the powers that be (no cutting the show budget for an inflatable dragon on the Empire State Building, Zaslav) but on the other hand this man will literally write anything but The Winds of Winter. :o

I didn't expect him to venture into season 3 territory and divulge their plans. Even though it's based on a book and the whole story is technically already out there, doesn't that still violate some sort of NDA?

Probably why he deleted it.

Again all the more reason why he should have just kept it to an internal email only to the showrunners and writers. His criticisms are valid but exposing their plans for future seasons is asking for trouble, regardless of whether it's already out there via the source material.

The show isn’t above criticism, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more conclusive piece of evidence that this dude is devoting his time to absolutely everything but writing books 6 and 7.

I think the post was good evidence of why you are never getting the final books. Dude cannot edit. If he likes something, it has to stay in.

At this point I couldn’t care less about anything George RR Martin has to say, tbh. He became of no interest to me when I realized he himself has no interest in finishing his story. He’s interested in living the good life on his piles of money he got from the story he never even had to finish, and b***ing from the sidelines, which, hey, good for him, but it makes him irrelevant to my interests.

At least the people making this show intend to see their plans through.

I just want to know why HBO/WB are even trying to make more GoT when they can barely afford HotD. Budget cuts have already hurt the series.

Well, there's a big difference between what they can actually afford to spend on the show and what Zaslav's Wall Street peabrain thinks they can afford to NOT spend. Cutting costs for the sake of cutting, trying to find the lowest possible threshold of expense before it all collapses, is his MO

Honestly expected a much bigger expose from that post. I feel like everyone already assumed that Maelor had been cut from the story. As for the ramifications it's not exactly hard to write a new motivation for someone in Heleana's position to kill herself. The main problem is that the show thus far has dropped the ball on showing how beloved she's supposed to be by the people of the city.

And it will still come out before The Winds of Winter. Then again, it's already been renewed, so it's at least cleared that hurdle.

‘House of the Dragon’ Star Matt Smith Says He Hasn’t Seen a Season 3 Script or Heard a Pitch Yet

During a panel at New York Comic Con on Sunday featuring Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen, and his “Game of Thrones” prequel co-stars Fabian Frankel (Criston Cole) and Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II Targaryen), the actors revealed they have varying levels of information from showrunner Ryan Condal and the writers regarding where the story goes after the Season 2 finale, which aired in August.

“Not a jot, not a letter,” Glynn-Carney said when moderator Josh Horowitz asked if any of them had seen a script for the upcoming third season. “The longer they take, the longer we don’t have to read anything for a while. ”

I would assume (and hope) that GRRM's blog post properly shook them up and they went back to the drawing board for season 3 and beyond to change stuff that he hinted would definitely not go over well. Otherwise I feel like the season 3 pitch would have been ready by now.

Georgie may have flirted with legal ramification but there's a chance he may have righted the ship with that post.

Love that this show has succeeded and is on a consistent production schedule at this rate. Great comeback from GoT after such a huge low.
